Alice blinked in surprise. She was silent for a moment. “Oh!” she suddenly said. She blushed from embarrassment. “Oh, Godric, no. I… I didn’t mean it like that. I mean… I don’t think I did” she said, a hand jumping to her face, her fingers resting on her pursed lips.
She turned back to Edgar, catching him looking at her. “What?” she asked with a smile. She cast him a confused look, subconsciously, and self-consciously brushing her dark hair from her face. Alice reached out touching his upper arm. “Thanks for coming back” she said gently, earnestly. She hadn’t realised how much she’d missed him until he had been stood in front of her.
She blinked in surprise once again. “I…yes! We’d love that! I’d… love that” she said. She knew it had been a completely gentlemen-ly offer, completely friendly, and despite the fact he’d entered a mind a lot recently, even without her knowing he was back, for some unknown meaning to her. She chuckled. “He’d love that. He loves adventure stories as much as I do” she promised. She nodded her head. “I’ll keep that all in mind” she said gently. “I could definitely do with a friend sometimes” she admitted.
Tumblr media
‘I don’t think I did.’
There it was: the polite, even embarrassed, admission. He’d grown so used to them lately. ‘I don’t blame you, man, but...’ they’d say, some adding how they’d have loved to have him around (a nice way of saying there had been work to do), others mercifully trailing off - but even in their silence, they all judged him. He knew they didn’t mean to; they were all good people, often close friends. It was just the inevitable response to a coward.
Edgar smiled softly at her. “I just haven’t seen you in a while, is all,” he said simply, shifting his gaze to his worn out boots with the realisation that he was making her uncomfortable. Her hand on his arm made him look up again, though, and there was something in her eyes he hadn’t thought he’d see again. Acceptance. “I should’ve never left.” He sighed, letting the words hang between them for a moment, before lightening up the conversation again.
“But I’m back now, and we have catching up to do,” the man exclaimed, smiling fully for the first time since he’d seen her. “I’d be happy to take you two out for lunch,” he suggested, hopefully not sounding too keen. “Whenever works for you, my hours are quite flexible.” He looked away, eyes finding Neville with ease. He looked a lovely boy — and how could he not, with his parents? The world was a brighter place for having him in it.

aliceflorencefortescue:
Alice felt so comfortable beside Edgar, within his arms. He seemed to fit perfectly around the shapes and curves of her body. She felt inclined to not move, because then the moment and this feeling would be spoilt. In the moment, Alice felt perfectly content and comfortable with herself and the world. Just in this moment, inside her apartment, beside Edgar, beneath the covers of her cotton duvet. She exhaled quietly, closing her eyes for a moment.
She chuckled quietly, stifling a yawn. “And yet I have to commit it every day” she murmured. “Except Sundays, Sunday’s are all mine” she said, drawing out the last word of the sentence. Alice raised her head slightly to look at Ed. “Tomorrow? Before ten am?” she asked, slightly surprised. A small smile captured her lips, be it a sleepy smile. She nodded. “I’d like that” she told him. After a moments pause he spoke again and Alice snorted. “I’d like that also” she added, pressing a wide smiled kiss to his chest. She rested her head back against his shoulder.
Alice murmured in agreement. “Okay” she whispered. “I don’t mind you keeping me up though.” she told him. “You I’d let keep me up” she added with a yawn. She let her eyes fall closed once more, smiling briefly when she felt his lips gently against hers. “Night, Ed”
Fin.

I'm nothing but a low life Thinking 'bout my own life I'm trying to fight the good old fight But after it all, I'm still just a low life
Wanna be a better man, but it's a hard life Without that love inside you, it's a cold bind

littlexlambmary:
“Thank you,” she smiled at him, still scratching the back of Max’s ears. “Oh it’s alright, I think he’s a lovely and handsome boy,” she said, cupping the dog’s face with both hands and smiling at it. “You’re a handsome boy aren’t you Max? Why, yes you are,” she cooed to Max who let out a bark, almost forgetting Edgar was right next to her. She smiled sheepishly as Max curled at her feet, almost as if he was eavesdropping on their conversation.
“Well, I’m glad you took him in, he seems like lovely company,” she said, smiling over as she reached over to take the mug. Edgar of all people knew the soft spot she had for animals and she could not resist but to give Max another pat. She leaned back against the couch, beginning to finally relax as Edgar started to speak. She wanted to know what he had been up to, curious to know what he had been doing while during the time he left.
The moment he mentioned “few friends”, she could feel her smile fading away and she raised the mug to her lips as if to hide it and quickly took another sip of tea that tasted just the way she liked it. At least he remembered how she liked her tea, she thought. She couldn’t help but to feel her stomach churn when he mentioned the memories and new friends he made. “Oh, that’s wonderful,” she said politely, smiling at him. No, she wasn’t jealous, she mentally repeated to herself. She was just curious about what he had been up to while he was…away.
She took yet another long sip of tea as question began flooding her mind. Who were his friends? Were they like her? Or Alice? Or Emmeline? Had he decided to move on with his life when he went away? Did he ever think of her while he was gone? She winced, hating how she sounded like an over-possessive best friend.
“Do you regret coming back?” she asked, (blurted out more like it). She couldn’t help herself, not after she couldn’t help but to feel like he never actually wanted to come back.
She was quiet for a moment, deep in thoughts as her gaze fixed on her hands. Moving in with him suddenly seemed like a huge step, especially since she had not seen or spoken to him in years. She took a deep breath. But maybe he was right, maybe the countryside was what they needed. And maybe this was what she need.
She looked at him and smiled. “I agree, I think the countryside might do us some good,” she smiled. “I could get myself a bicycle and cycle around,” she mused, grinning at the thought. “I’m sure we can find a lovely little cottage some where.”
Tumblr media
Edgar burst into a proper fit of laughter watching Mary coo at the dog; and she called herself a cat person... Bollocks. “He’s alright,” the man acquiesced, not willing to spoil Max any further after all the compliments he’d already received. There was something endlessly heartwarming about how well the other two got on, and he was slowly realising just how happy he would be to spend the foreseeable future with the two of them.
When she next spoke, however, Mary’s tone felt a little stiff, and the man had to wonder if he’d said something wrong. Had she not wanted to know about his time away? Maybe he should’ve known it was a polite rhetorical question, but it had been so long since he’d spoken to her... Her expression had fallen again and he waited to see if she would speak out about what was bothering her.
Her question caught him entirely by surprise, however. That she could even consider that an option... Unthinkable. His eyebrows came together, concern etching itself in the corners of his lips, his eyes, his hands. Why would she even think that? After he’d reassured her that he wasn’t leaving again... But what did his words mean anymore, especially to her?
“Merlin, no,” he said, slightly stunned, with an emphatic shake of his head. “The only thing I regret is leaving.” He sought her eyes with his, steady gaze searching her tired face for the words she needed to hear. “I had nothing out there, barely slept in the same place twice,” he began, hoping that maybe telling her more would help her understand what it had really been like. When he’d said friends, he’d meant people he often didn’t speak the same language as, who’d fed him and given him somewhere to sleep. That had been the full extent of his human interaction for months at a time. “The only reason I didn’t come back immediately was stubbornness; I thought if I came running back in three days, no one would ever take me seriously.”
He had to pause, overwhelmed with regret at the level of childish stupidity that had wrecked his life for years. Lost for words, he pulled at his beard, before hiding his face in his hands for a moment. He’d known the topic wasn’t done and dusted, but this had really caught him off guard. “I just... Wanted to prove to myself that I didn’t need others, because it felt like nobody needed me.”
That had always been it, hand’t it? Not wanting to be the vulnerable one, to put himself out there and risk getting hurt.. How many people had it cost him over the years?
When he next spoke, his voice was quiet but full of the kind of longing that could burn a man alive from the inside. “I want nothing more than to live in a little cottage with a vegetable patch and a pond in the back. Max would run around chasing the ducks, and you’d be chasing him to tell him off, and I’d laugh as I make breakfast.” He’d been thinking about coming home for so long, at first subconsciously, and then slowly coming to realise it was what he’d needed. He couldn’t lose this now, couldn’t lose her. “I want you on your bicycle off to get milk for the tea from our neighbours, and warm, lazy picnics in the forest, or nights spent huddled under a blanket on the veranda watching the stars...” He trailed off, conscious that his voice was cracking as he rambled. God, they’d had it so bad for so long, they deserved something good. They deserved this.
“I never should have left, Mar. Let me make it up to you and fix this. Us.”

She nodded, taking the quill from him, inspecting it in her hands and smiling widely at Ed. “Yeah, I am, of sorts. I’m actually studying, but a crossword sounded way more relaxing.”
Sybill was never one to be able to stand still for too long, so she started swaying a little bit, “How have you been? I know we didn’t know each other that well but I’d like to think you remember and like me enough.”
Tumblr media
Sybill had always had an odd air about her, but who was Ed to judge? She’d never been anything but perfectly lovely to him, so he was happy to ignore any mutterings about her strange ways that may have circulated in their Hogwarts days. “Love a good crossword!” he said, with the excitement of an ex Ravenclaw, permanent procrastinator. “Let me know if you need help,” he offered with a smile. He took a bite out of his sandwich and washed it down with some more tea.
“I’ve been absolutely fine, thank you!” It had been a while since he’d last seen her, so he wasn’t sure what state he’d been in, but he didn’t want her to worry. Or ask any questions.. “Of course I remember and like you,” Edgar assured the girl; he couldn’t help wondering how other people must behave around her. “How’s life been treating you?”

emmelinevancetheraven:
When moving day came Emmeline was more than ready, she had her stuff packed for weeks and couldn’t wait to move. She hadn’t asked any of her friends to help her, she didn’t want or need it. She liked to do things herself and she also hadn’t told them yet she was going to be living with Edgar. She wasn’t hiding the fact, it just hadn’t been brought up in conversation yet.
Emmeline starting grabbing boxes, she was going to apparate to the flat and back with boxes. She left her first boxes outside then apparated back to her old flat to get the rest of the boxes. It was a long process but worth it in the end and she was almost finished. Getting the last boxes, she took one last look in her old flat before leaving the keys and apparating to her new flat.
She decided to wait for Edgar outside, she started reading her favourite book while she did. It was keeping her entertained while she waited for the boy to arrive.
Edgar would’ve been running behind schedule if he’d bothered making one in the first place. As it was, he had a vague idea that maybe Emmeline would be waiting for him when he got to the flat, but he wasn’t in a rush or anything. She had keys, right? He’d managed to pack most of his rubbish the previous day and was putting the finishing touches after lunch, when he realised he wasn’t sure how to get everything over. Cue another delay as he debated options with the exhaustive consideration of a Ravenclaw, before finally shrugging, shoving it all in a magically expanded suitcase, and dragging that with him. There wasn’t that much anyway, he wasn’t exactly a homemaker.
He apparated at the foot of the stairs to their floor and started making his way up, the suitcase levitating behind him. In a few moments he was nearly there, and he could see neat stacks of boxes piled high. He supposed Em was somewhere behind them, but couldn’t really tell from the fort she’d built.
“Hello?” the man called as he took the final step and stood in front of the door. From there he could see his new flatmate sitting on the stairs to the next floor, seemingly lost in a book. “I didn’t know you’d be waiting for me, I’d have made more of an effort,” he said with an apologetic laugh. “Shall we?” He nodded towards the flat, before getting his keys out and opening the door to their new home, a big smile on his face.

Sybill cocked her head to the side, looking over at the person. She bit her lip as she walked over, “Can I borrow a pen?”
Tumblr media
A familiar voice prompted Ed to look up from his lunch, and his eyes landed on Sybill. He furrowed his eyebrows at her odd request, trying to work out what exactly she was asking. “D’you mean a quill?” From what he could remember, pens were kind of like that, right? He rifled through his backpack and handed her his trusty, well-worn quill. “You solving a crossword?” He laughed amiably, taking a sip from his tea.

littlexlambmary:
Mary opened her eyes slowly and found herself in a slightly messy but cozy flat. A small smile formed on her face and she chuckled softly as he quickly used his free hand to put the clutter away. It didn’t bother her too much honestly. Her blue eyes scanned his flat, their hands still held on to each other. “You have such a lovely place, Edgar.”
She nodded as he let go of her hand and nodded towards the couch. She gingerly sat on his couch, it was much cosier than she had expected. She rubbed her thighs, looking around the flat again. She couldn’t help but to feel slightly awkward at his flat, after all she hadn’t seen him in years and she couldn’t help but to feel like any other guests.
She turned her attention back at him. “Well…” she paused. She hadn’t thought much about where she wanted to live. She had been moving about for a while that the idea of settling down at one place had never crossed her mind, what more moving to a countryside. While she had always imagined herself being in the city, there was something appealing about moving to a nice, quiet area with Edgar. Who knew, she might just get the peace of mind she had been so desperately seeking for. “You really wouldn’t mind moving to a countryside?”
“Dog?” she asked, confused for a moment, until she saw a dog coming straight to her. Her eyes lit up and she laughed as it started wagging its tail. While Mary had always been a cat person, there was no way she could resist the charm of this dog. “Well, such a pleasure to meet you Max. I’m Mary,” she spoke to the dog, giggling as she gave it a hug and started rubbing its ears. “Oh dogs, you know how they insist on such fancy names. But he’s such a lovely dog, sunflower. When did you get Maximilian?  And what else did you get that I should know about?” she grinned widely.
Tumblr media
“It’s alright, I guess,” Edgar replied, looking around the flat again. Could’ve been worse. He could see Mary trying to get used to his new place, sitting down slightly stiffly and looking around like a stranger, like she wasn’t a part of his life... He could remember her old flat; how he’d crashed on her couch whenever he couldn’t make it to his own bed, how she’d always left him breakfast before disappearing for work. They’d had so much together, so many wonderful shared habits, moments, memories. He wondered if there was any chance of getting back to that point, or whether they were too old and too bitter to trust as fully and purely as they had in their youth.
For his part, he would always be ready and willing to lay down his life for her. No one else had known him the way she had, although... Was he even the person she loved all those years ago? Only time would tell.
Mary seemed to be considering his suggestion, and the man gave her some time while he readied the two cups of tea. When she finally spoke, he’d just taken a sip and so just nodded in reply. A moment later, the two cups were on the coffee table in front of the couch and he’d sat down next to her. He was just about to answer her question when Max decided he really needed all of Mary’s attention, right now. The dog still hadn’t caught on to the fact that he was no longer a pup, and so he unceremoniously made himself at home in Mary’s lap, his large paws on her shoulders.
Edgar couldn’t help but chuckle at the sight of his two best friends bonding, although he was keen to pick up their conversation again. “Alright, pal, settle down,” he said, still laughing. Fortunately, Max decided that he’d had enough scratches and curled up in Mary’s feet. “Don’t let him fool you, he is an absolute menace sometimes,” the man said with a slight shake of his head. “I met him a few months back, but he just wouldn’t let me leave, so here we are.” In all honesty, he loved having a dog again; there was something infinitely comforting about hearing Max’s feet on the wooden floor. The man bit back a joke about picking up some exotic STDs (not with Mary, of all people) and paused to consider his answer. “A lot of memories, a few friends, some self-awareness,” he said, perhaps a little wistfully. He wished he could tell her some of his stories, but it felt like such a sensitive subject...
“But anyway, I was saying, I’d love to move to the countryside. After, well... Everything, I— uh, I really don’t think I can stand London for very long.” He tried to keep his tone light despite the seriousness of what he was saying, or rather not saying, wary of stirring up her own bad memories. “Fresh air is good for the soul, too,” he finished with a winsome smile, just in case she needed convincing.
