The way you treat your crew sets the tone for everything, lead with respect and they’ll give you everything they’ve got.

It always seemed to be a shock that I could keep an entire yard of export and import that fed multiple other zone locations, crews, 25+ drivers some days and subs in sync and organized without coming off as an “ Alpha female “.

In fact, most doubted me when I was moved into this position because of that. They didn’t think I could handle all the people, let alone keep everything in line. Just for the general superintendent to come down one day and say they’ve never hit numbers like that before and to keep it up. True example of don’t judge a book by its cover, there might chapters inside that blow your boots off.

It’s simple, show them respect, they respect you.

Give praise where it’s deserved and guidance when it’s needed.

Hand out reminders like it’s Halloween candy for safety because it matters.

Set the tone and expectation.

Keep morale high even if it feels like another task stacked on a billion others, it’s essential for high production.

Basically, be strategic, play nice in the sand box, take care of your toys ( Equipment) and all will be dandy.

I’m all about improving the culture of this industry but not softening the truth to make it look more desirable. I came from the trench and I keep getting asked to drive these incentives that are honestly just sugar coated fantasies to me. Im not going to sit here and direct every person, young adult that comes my way to the trades.

The trades are an amazing career, truly but that doesn’t mean they are for everyone. I see so many “ influencers “ on here blowing the sunshine and rainbows smoke about it and that’s why people aren’t lasting as well. We aren’t talking about that part though, it’s just “ well the people aren’t welcoming enough and that needs to change “. They think it’s one way because that’s what they were told and then they hate their job because hey turns out it’s hard physical work laying pipe and maybe that isn’t their tea.

If you don’t like to get up early, probably not for you.

If you don’t like working late when the sun stays out longer, probably not for you.

If you don’t like getting dirty, probably not for you.

If you don’t want scars, probably not for you.

If you don’t want to sweat, probably not for you.

Would I go back and choose differently because of all the above, absolutely not. It’s what I love, it’s the smell of that crisp morning, watching the sun come up, being active, building the relationships that don’t happen in an office ( crew bonds are a different animal ), working outside, running machines, that rush of adrenaline when you all thought you were burnt out but kept each other going till it was done for the night because something went sideways.

For certain people, this is our path, this is where we belong. It is our fulfillment. Do we have days where we are like “ I’m over this “, of course we do but we stay because a part of us thrives on it. It’s more than a clock in, we bring the world to life.

For others it will not bring them that same happiness.

Inspire the trades, don’t force them.

Those who are meant to be in it will find their way with us showing the direction of possibilities like never before, the training and the time will be worth it to us and them.

If you have to convince or change someone to choose this path instead of what brings them their fulfillment, you’ve already failed them.

Our job is to educate, include, inspire, motivate, uplift and help evolve not hand out false promises and fantasies.

Boots on the ground in the field is very different than field support in the office and I find that that seems to be the hard one for some to conceptualize. Both are needed to complete a project, both have different strengths and very different perceptions. Respect should be shown both ways because like I said, without each other, it’s not getting done.

The work will always have to be done, it will always get done. Mentor those who are hungry and want it to set them up for success.

Yesterday Apex Leadership Co shared a fundraising event with the next generation, including my daughter.

They spoke of integrity, true grit and being grateful.

They inspired them to be leaders.

Yesterday my baby taught me a lot, she looked like a just another kindergartner running her heart out but in reality -

- She knew her mission and even though Momma was there, she didn’t stop. Other kids were stopping, leaving the course to see their parents etc but Roxy just smiled and ran faster as she went by me.

- She knew I was there and I was her motivator, she was so proud of herself and that made me so happy to see.

- She accomplished her 36 laps ( 2.2 miles ) and still broke her pace to encourage another little one to keep going and held her hand to get her running again.

- Roxy proved that size and age doesn’t stop you, she’s the youngest and the smallest from where her birthday falls and my genes of only being 5’2”. Her little legs pulled double time to accomplish her goal.

-Roxy showed us that the mission is more important than the distraction, the distraction can be used as motivation to push harder and despite odds or limitations, you can always accomplish your goal. There’s always room / time to help another. Be proud of yourself and to smile along the way.

“Though she but little, she is fierce.”

( I wasn’t asked to make this post, they had no idea who the mom in a bright orange hoodie and joggers with sunglasses was, I just really believe in what I saw from this organization today and wanted to give recognition where it’s deserved. )

“ It’s just a competition. “

From a perspective that doesn’t understand our world, maybe that’s how it would seem.

What isn’t seen on camera for the public, is what means the most.

These are screen shots from the sidelined outtake videos.

The laughs.

The new friends.

How we all became cheerleaders for each other even though we were competing against one another.

Sharing stories that only us dirt hounds understand.

Cracking jokes at each other but then at the end of the day when you’re disappointed in your performance for one reason or another, the other competitors point out everything you did amazing at.

It’s the culture.

The passion.

The inclusion.

The goals.

The drive.

The growth.

The inspiration.

The building of self worth.

Learning to see the value for yourself and not what others made you think you were.

Leaving comfort zones.

Breaking limits, holding your personal boundaries and learning that’s okay. I’m a union operator I couldn’t be running around acting any other way than I would on a job site and I did that even knowing it would cost me placement.

Understanding that maybe just because I got camera choked in the first event, I was invited there because I was good and that moment doesn’t define my skill. I can stack a block wall by myself with an open hook, by the video you can’t see that and I had to let that go. Other factors I let get to me, I’ve never had Bill Elverman as a labor hand before, I didn’t know his moves, I didn’t know his response times and that frazzled me coming where I come from. So many variables are involved mentally and it’s okay as long as you remember, you’re there for a reason.

It’s more than a competition. The machines brought us together but it’s the people, culture and experience that make us want to come back. The machines don’t just move dirt, they build friendships and stories that become legends.

If every crew on actual job sites could interact like we did, the trades would be indestructible.

Confidence isn’t always polished, sometimes it’s caked in mud.

Some women feel the most powerful with dirt on their hands.

Some women don’t need high heels to feel tall, a pair of work boots and the pride of doing the job that not many others can.

Some women find their place of self worth in what sets them apart from the rest.

Some women feel the best in the woods instead of a ballroom.

I was out of my place in my dress, I didnt feel like myself. I didn’t even want to take my coat off the first 2 hours no matter how many said how “ gorgeous “ I cleaned up. All I wanted was a pair of jeans and my boots on, I have a nice matching pair for off work.

This is why some women belong in the trades instead of in heels for their career. It’s a part of us. It’s where our soul thrives.

I can slip into the glass slipper when I need to but I’d rather live in my square toes.

Do what you love, not what others expect of you.
