it’s always so easy to compare yourselves to others, to deem yourself the lesser person. at times, it’s really hard to find the good in yourself that you see in others. but dig deeper, look around. you have so much in you. you are so unique, your life is so unique and neither of them deserve this comparison.

Study/Homework Tips Volume 2
1. Study with books. Avoid the computer as much as possible so that you don’t get the urge to look at social media, email, and other websites that probably won’t help with your homework/studying.
2. Try to avoid studying or working on homework in your bed. This way, you should have less of an urge to just fall back on your pillows and go to sleep when you should be studying. I recommend sitting at your desk (if you have one), on the floor, or at your dining room table.
3. In essays or informational papers, color code your dates, terms, people, words that have some sort of large connection to your topic, events, places, and quotes. Try to make sure you have some of each because these will normally help make your papers stronger.
4. When writing an essay, make sure you acknowledge the opposing side’s point of view. You shouldn’t agree with them, just make sure you acknowledge that they have reasonable feelings about this topic, too.
5. If you’re having trouble writing an interesting essay introduction, try starting your intro paragraph with a quote that relates to your topic. Even though I’m a straight A student, I had trouble with these, too. This has helped me so much in the past!
6. Use different notebooks for each class. This is another great way to help separate your notes to help prevent all of them blending together.
7. You’ve probably heard this one before, but study each subject with a different flavor of gum/hard candy. When taking your test, chew or suck on the same flavor of gum/candy that you studied with.
8. Clenching your fist helps you remember the word that’s on the tip of your tongue.
9. In class, don’t doodle all over your note papers. Instead, put some sort of little doodle by important things like maybe a little flower is a symbol for a date, or a little smiley face for a key person in an event.
10. When studying a foreign language: study with flashcards, don’t be worried about your pronunciation but try to speak your words/phrases out loud, write down that language’s grammar and conjugation rules, and PRACTICE!!
11. Study from videos if you need to. There are a lot of different YouTube channels run by people who know a lot about the subjects you are learning. This is how I learned most of my math skills ahead of my grade. It’s also helped me write essays about the ancient Roman emperors for my world history class.
12. If your friends are trying to text you about the latest gossip or whatever you like to talk about, try spinning the conversation to talking about what you’re studying. Who know, maybe they understand your homework or study topic a lot better than you?
13. Change study positions. If you’ve been sitting at your desk for the past hour, try sitting or laying on the floor.
14. When in doubt, Google it! If you forgot something that your teacher taught you in class, Google what that was or just the topic in general and go to a site you know you can trust. Please don’t use Wikipedia! Seriously, one of my old teacher’s friends was know as the inventor of haircuts for like 5 years before someone figured it out.
15. Try not to stay up super late at night or even all night studying. If you’re really that worried, study on the bus on the way to school. You can also study when you get there before your first bell rings and maybe even for the first few minutes of your class.
Good luck! I hope this helps! Follow me for more and/or comment what lists and tips you would like to see next! I love hearing from you guys!

some tips for incoming college freshmen, based on the mistakes i made during my first year
✎ don’t get in the habit of skipping class for no reason. really. it might seem harmless (especially if attendance isn’t required) but it will most likely end up affecting you negatively. just go to class.
✎ try to be as organized as possible. organization can’t harm you and there are so many potential benefits to keeping your school and personal life in order.
✎ don’t be afraid to enjoy yourself. honestly, what’s the point if school is only ever miserable. there are so many ways to enjoy your experience at college, so take a break from your studies every once in a while. otherwise, you might find yourself hating school.
✎ that being said, don’t spend too much time socializing and partying. or, at least, don’t choose it over your school work altogether. you don’t want the social aspect of college to overpower the academic aspect. after all, you are most likely paying a lot of money to study there, and ignoring your studies will only harm you. find a balance.
✎ even if your classes don’t start until 2 in the afternoon, wake up at a reasonable time. it might be difficult if you’re used to sleeping in very late, but the morning is the perfect time to get some things done, and sleeping in until 10 minutes before your class does waste a lot of time. plus, you’ll probably do better in class if you didn’t just wake up.
✎ naps are good though! as long as you don’t nap during the whole day, napping is very beneficial.
✎ don’t get too involved in drama with other people. if your friend group becomes draining and exhausting because of drama, recognize that it might be better for you to take a step back.
✎ don’t get caught up in the idea of having the perfect “college experience.” do what you want to do, not what everyone else does or what you believe you’re supposed to do. there are different types of college experiences, and you don’t have to, for example, join a sorority/fraternity, go to parties, get drunk/high, etc. just because you think you’re supposed to as a college student.
✎ try to participate in class. i failed at this miserably because of my fear of talking to people lol, but it is best to be more involved in class discussions if you can. this is especially important when participation is part of your grade.
✎ if you have a roommate, don’t expect to be best friends with them. you can, but it’s not always best. in my experience, it tends to work best if you’re friendly with them, but you also have different groups of people you hang out with. this is based on preference though.
✎ get off of campus sometimes! depending on where you live, there may be a bunch of things you can do in your town with friends. you don’t want to always feel stuck at your school. that being said, there are probably a lot of things to do on campus too.
✎ if you have a source of income, try to be reasonable with your spending. you should definitely save some money for emergencies. and the money you do spend should be spent reasonably. this isn’t to say you should never spend money on things that you enjoy, but you definitely should have some sort of budget, or you might find yourself wasting all of your money on 2am trips to denny’s (if you’re me, that is).
✎ sometimes you may need to be alone. don’t feel bad telling your friends ‘no’ every once in a while. you may find it easiest to work alone, or you might just wanna relax without the pressure of being with other people. that’s okay! find a place on campus where you can be away from everyone sometimes.

I started making my own masterpost of links for personal use back in November, and I ended up collecting enough links that had to be split into multiple posts! So, as a result, this masterpost entails everything college related, including applying, dorms, exams/finals and more (I would add a lot more, but Tumblr won’t allow me). If I repeated any links or if the links are dead, please tell me and I’ll fix it up as soon as I can! Or, if I’ve included your post and you’d like me to remove it, please tell me and I’ll do so immediately. Otherwise, hopefully this helps anyone who needs it!

30 Things I’ve Learned in High School
In a month or so, school will be coming back (depending where you live). I’m only a Sophmore, but I’ve already learned so much in one year. If you’re going to be starting as a Freshmen this year, or just need some advice, here’s a list of 30 things I’ve learned in one year of High School.
1. Having school spirit is way more fun. Don’t worry about looking over the top because everyone else is being over the top too.
2. You’ll start to learn who your true friends are. Cherish them.
3. The only person who cares what you look like is you. Wanna wear your pyjamas to school? Go for it. You wanna spend an hour doing your makeup and wear a dress? Sounds great. Do what makes you comfortable.
4. Take photos. You don’t have to post them on Instagram or whatever, just keep them for yourself. You’ll want to remember that good day with your friends when you’re having a bad day.
5. Always try to be friendly. Even a fake smile and a “Good morning,” is better than a silent frown.
6. One bad grade isn’t the end of the world, so don’t try to get hung up on it. Use it as motivation to do better next time.
7. Stay on good terms with all your teachers. Even if you don’t like a certain teacher, remember that they’re people too. It will be helpful when your grade is a 89.8 and you ask them to round it to a 90 (I know from experience).
8. Keep every worksheet, assignment, and review. It’s nice to have when its finals and you’ve completely forgotten how to do this thing you learned in the first unit. It can also be helpful if you have lower classmen friends and/or siblings. You can show it to them and help them out.
9. In regards to friends, its quality over quantity. Don’t strive to be popular and make friends with every person in your grade. You only need two or three really good friends to be happy.
10. That being said, don’t be afraid to cut ties with bad/toxic friends. You may have been close in middle school and found out in high school you don’t really like each other. That’s okay! Just be respectful about it.
11. If you need to distance yourself from friends during class to stay focused, then do it. If they all want to sit in the back and you’d prefer the front, then sit in the front. You can be with them outside of class later.
12. It’s high school; there will be people who drink/party. You don’t have to. If someone offers, just say no. They won’t be offended (more drinks for them anyways).
13. Know when to shut up and when to speak up. Don’t let people talk over you, and don’t talk over other people.
14. Find a ‘go to’ classroom. The people in my biology class would go to the Bio room during lunches to study and eat, or to get away from the cafeteria. If you need some space, this is where you can go. Just be sure to ask the teacher before you just start eating your lunch in their room.
15. Always. Do. The. Reading. I cannot stress this enough. If you’ve been able to fake it in the past, great, but you won’t be able to anymore. The teachers will be able to separate the people who’ve done the woke, and who’ve copied it from Sparknotes. Plus, it’s so much easier to talk about a book you’ve actually read.
16. Have a friend/buddy in every class. This is helpful for homework or class work; you can text/email each other if one of you is having trouble or missed a day. And at some point, you will probably have a partner project.
17. You’re going to need public speaking at some point. If you’re shy or have anxiety (like moi) then it might feel like the worst five minutes of your life. But there’s 1,440 minutes in a day. This will only take five. Take a deep breath and remember that most likely nobody cares what you’re saying.
18. There’s no point in stressing about what you can’t change. Yes, I know this can be hard to remember but just try to keep it in mind.
19. Be organized!! It’s so much better to be organized and come to class prepared than to have to ask the kid next to you, “Can I borrow a pen?” or “Wait, what was the teacher saying? What are we doing?”
20. Get ready the night before. Plan the next day, pick an outfit, pack your lunch, check off your to-do list, whatever it is you have to do.
21. Early mornings = productive days. Try not to sleep in too late even on the weekends. Get up, eat breakfast, workout, do your homework, go outside, whatever you have to do to be somewhat productive.
22. Develop good habits early on. Do your homework, write in your planner, etc. It’s easier to start now than the week before finals.
23. Learn to destress. Light a candle, brush your hair, paint your nails, go on a walk, clean your room, it doesn’t matter. A little self care can go a long way.
24. Enjoy learning! You’re fortunate to be able to get an education, so try to enjoy it. It can be hard but just try to develop some sort of interest in what you’re studying.
25. Ask things! Ask your teacher, ask your friends, ask Google, ask somebody if you’re confused. You’ll remember the information so much better if you’re participating in class and making an effort to clarify when you’re confused.
26. Get. Some. Freaking. Sleep. If its midnight and you have a huge test tomorrow just take a deep breath, go to bed, and wake up a little earlier the next day to review. Your body needs sleep to function, so give it what it needs.
27. Do your homework. Similar to point 22; as soon as you get your homework, get it done or at least start.
28. Motivation < Self Discipline. There are so many post on this website about getting motivated, but motivation is temporary. Self discipline lasts. Heres a link to a post on self discipline vs. motivation (also here)
29. Spend time every week to clean. It’s easier to hang up three t-shirts on your floor than to have to fold every piece of clothing you own because your entire closet is on your floor from the weeks of not doing anything.
30. Have an end goal. It will give you something to work towards, and keep you motivated throughout the week, the month, the year, etc.
