there’s a lot of discourse surrounding gru’s character development in the second movie, and honestly, i find it so pedantic… it’s inane to think that by the end of the movie, he hadn’t grown into himself more?? the way he treated the minions with such tenderness and care was such a far departure from the shell he was before his ptsd diagnosis. as the movie wears on, you can really start to see the toll vietnam took on his psyche; so watching that be mended by a combination of love from the minions, an amazing mental health team… it was beautiful, honestly. and they set up such a good segue into the third movie because it shows that even though you might think you’re healed, you can’t rest on your laurels– i think showing the beginning of his crack cocaine addiction exemplified that. let’s just hope that the minions can get him to stop chasing that dragon in the next one, haha! or how to train that dragon, with how big and grumpy gru can be. (lol, just a how to train your dragons reference 😏)
