Saw this great meme template by user cereovo and had to indulge myself.

Quincy was funny to fill this out for. Depending on the traits given him by the player, he might be presumptuous and rude, shaky and browbeaten, or completely mum. Regardless, his phlegmatic person and uh, let's say.... interpretive... approach to speaking with other humans equals never a dull moment to write.

D'Angelo is a breeze on the other hand. He's a character I've had for too long, and I love demonstrating the ways in which he's simple. (And hinting about the ways he is not.)

Not a dagger or knife, but his "signature weapon" is a rapier - and it absolutely is manticore themed.

Lucas commits to his theming pretty hard, as evidenced by his clothing. I have no doubt there's probably some pen knife or whatever that he carries with a silver manticore for it's handle. He earns his own income, and isn't immune to spending it on nice baubles.

They certainly seem close, but no one is sure how to weigh that against the fact that Cathy has also appeared close with Prince Oscar, and for much longer. Of course, rumor has it that Prince Oscar has appeared close with many other women, so in the end, all we have is conjecture.

Bit of a Lucas glow up.

Truly he is one of my favorite Forever Gold characters, both to write and draw. I really wanted his design to properly convey his acerbity and theming. The old one was just not doing it.

I made that first round of references for Forever Gold just under a year ago. Everyone's gotten tweaks substantially before their portraits were drawn. (...Except Quincy, he's perfect.) I'm pleasantly surprised with how much my Georgian-ish fantasy outfit design sensibilities have improved since then. Only two years ago I struggled to draw things more complex than t-shirts and jeans, ha.

I made a few design decisions I wouldn't normally make, like using something as wildly modern as spats. (I usually try to keep insp like 1780s-1810s.) But that's the nice thing about fantasy settings... anachronistic features can slide.

They do a bit - the biggest difference is between the "wild type" hares still used by nomads, and the "standard" stockier varieties you'll find in cities and towns. Standards have over time gotten shorter and more compact to work better as cart animals.

They are entirely black with red eyes. But try to tell someone haretouched this, and they'll insist they range an infinite number of colors, and that their eyes run a gamut from sparkling ruby red to deep scarlet. It's true that different pelts will shine different greens and blues in the light, but... the color naming can get almost fanatical.

Hares also can have some general individual differences like ear length, tail shape, snout length. To the layman though, they're hard to tell apart.

They're not bred for color. In fact, they're rarely bred for... many reasons. Hares have a long lifespan (longer than humans, sometimes...) and a haretouched human will usually only bond to one hare in their lifetime. They are difficult to breed too-- they get aggressive.

Hares are not purposefully bred in nomadic society. (You just go find one on the tundra, or sometimes a doe comes back pregnant.) In the settled north, they're bred only when too many cart hares have died in mining accidents or the like.

Still, if they were capable of coming in colors other than black, it seems like it would have happened by now.

...There are some old nothern legends about a snow white hare who only appears to those the "most cursed", but they're half-forgotten oral traditions at this point.

Queen Amalthea was a beauty, and a competent one at that. (Ruling monarchs are historically male - Amalthea's only the second High Queen in all of Vesturian history.) She had to embody perfect femininity as well as keep up with the more masculine hobbies of her co-rulers. Most agree she did so with aplomb.

It's a common remark that Oscar is her spitting image.

(Human design, which I feel is just as important.)

(As well as what breeds inspired some characters' designs. I don't think any of them are that surprising, though!)

D'Angelo, Quincy, and Kaitos (@lsdoiphin) would all have a grand time for different reasons. Quincy has a lot to say about the animals. Kaitos likes looking at them and thinking, "well that guy looks weird". D'Angelo just thinks they're all very cute.

D'Angelo and Quincy don't have a whole lot in common, but they both love critters. The difference though is that D'Angelo probably shouldn't be left unsupervised for any period of time.

(Sure thing! I answered this in two parts - I went over meur types here, so I'll talk about what's considered highly valued in this post.)

Oscar sees to an unfortunate soul presenting with shrapnel in the right leg. After removing the offending pieces, white meur can be used to expedite bone regrowth and to close the wound. This greatly lowers the chance of infection. In many instances, white meur is the difference between a minor procedure and a painful death by sepsis.

In Cerostianism, all meur (besides black) is considered a gift from the Architect bestowed upon a lucky chosen few. Though it’s now understood by the common man that the ability to wield meur is passed by blood and probably not divine ordinance, the use of meur is still considered holy.

While all meur is a gift, the most sacred symbol in Cerostianism, the narwhal, is a blue meurian animal. Blue meur features heavily in religious texts and symbolism. I’ll honestly have to talk another time about the significance of blue meur in religious life. It’s much easier to talk about how white meur is also cherished: both in religion and wider culture.

The process of becoming a white practitioner is difficult. Moreover, white meur relics (with which to use white meur) are equally scarce. After the invention of the Andimeur synthesizer, demand for the white meurian animals exploded, and they were hunted to extinction. White meurian animals don’t preserve well either, so no further specimens have ever been found. All white meur relics in use are about as old as the Tri-Kingdom itself.

Everyone needs healing and medical attention though... and so white practitioners must by necessity be very busy and selfless people. Many of the newer Saints in Cerostianism were white practitioners in life. It isn't uncommon for white practitioners to die young, adding to the mystique. It’s said that the sick make better practitioners because the Architect blesses them with the saintly ability to understand the suffering of their fellow man... though anyone with sense will point out that it’s more likely because of the nonstop travel, back-breaking schedule and frequent exposure to disease.

The Andimeurs – that is, the midland royal family, have historically been white practitioners. Prince Oscar is no exception to this. His dedication to his patients (and subjects) is proven daily. All know of the countless hours he spends tending to the sick at his open clinic within Diadem’s Mane Quarter.
