Steve is still angry as fuck, so he doesn’t mince words. “Why won’t you look at me?” he demands, stepping forward, fists clenched. “Why won’t you talk to me? Why won’t you touch me?”
His voice almost breaks on the touch, and now his anger toward Bucky twists quickly into despair and self-hatred. “It’s because I’m a freak, isn’t it,” he says more softly. “I’m a huge, disgusting monster and you can’t even bear to look at me anymore.”

capt america fic recs: bucky barnes recovering pt. 1
below is a list of DEVASTATING SHORT STORIES focused on bucky's recovery from the winter solder that i haven't seen recced before
human by icoulddothisallday
Bucky Barnes wakes believing he is a golem and learns to be human again surrounded by his people.
beautiful. evocative imagery. absolutely devastating.
Fewer Spectators by Brokenpitchpie
Four days after rescuing the man from the bottom of the Potomac, the metal of his arm begins to rust. It takes another five until the electric currents that had allowed mobility begin to fail. It takes two more until the arm stops working entirely. He doesn't remove it.
so lyrical and quietly hopeful
Almond, Clavicle, Orchid by kvikindi
You say, "I don't know what I am." "It's okay not to know," Steve tells you. His face is very careful. But you know. You know that it's not okay.
layers of identity. one of those 2nd person POV fics that gut punches you with the lyricism
the black lake by alcibiades
It all ran together. Maybe it had been running together for a long time. He kind of lost track of it after a while; he had a little tablet in his room that would show him a calendar, some news, the weather. He didn't even look at the calendar, though. Calendars were for people who had something to expect, some event in their future to look forward to. Either he'd forgotten what that was like, or he'd never known in the first place. There had been a moment, in the water with Steve -- the first time or the second, he wasn't sure -- where his wet gear and Steve's dead weight had dragged them both down. They had rested together in the swirling silt at the bottom of the river, and Bucky had looked up through the water and the falling debris and seen the hazy light of the sky shining through. It had been strange. Everything happening around them, but this moment of silence and stillness. Sometimes the feeling Bucky had now reminded him of that.
such a thick aura of dissociation. really matches the author's art style, especially these two pieces: one, two (and here are two of my favorites: three, four)
how cold steel is (and keen with hunger) by jinlinli
There is a man who lives inside the Soldier’s head. The Soldier does not know much about the man. The man is an American, and he fought in one of the few twentieth-century wars the Soldier had not—if only because he did not exist yet. At some point, a war pitted their home countries against each other, but that did not put much of a damper on things. They are good friends. Here is how the Winter Soldier dies: the resurrection of James Barnes. An account of Bucky's time in Bucharest.
the note i have for this fic is simply "holy shit" and yeah. that's all i can say without tearing up. (technically not a short story at 20k, but definitely devastating)

Make do and mend
E | 9.3k | tags: exes to lovers; everybody lives nobody falls off a train; sometime between VE and VJ Day; lingerie; historically accurate lingerie to be exact; repressed tenderness; slow dancing
Steve’s grip tightens on his arm, bracing for the fragile moment to break, but what Bucky says is, “Did you mean it?” with his chin tucked to his chest. “You still mine tonight?” Steve’s startled laugh bounces off the cobblestones. He knows from Bucky’s glower, the color high on his cheeks, that whatever game he’s playing at, Steve isn’t following the rules. “I’m sorry!” he says, tugging Bucky back to his body. Quieter, with their faces so close, “I’m sorry. But Jesus Christ, Buck, that was a stupid question.”
