I'm only gonna say this once and only because I'm getting too pissed off at people across social media platforms. Biden did not cause what's happening in Afghanistan.

I have a degree in political science from Tufts University (with honors, top of my class before anyone tries to argue). If you haven't heard of Tufts, that's probably for the best. I envy you. But that's another story. I also work in veterans' law and advocacy. I work with a lot of Vietnam and Afghanistan vets. You can trust what I am about to say.

What is happening in Afghanistan is unfortunately inevitable due to historical events most of us on this website weren't alive for. Biden didn't cause it, Trump didn't cause it, and impressively enough Bush didn't cause this (though he arguably exacerbated it).

Afghanistan has unfortunately been on this path since Russia invaded the country in the 70s/80s to establish communism. And there's even more history before that that led up to that point. This is not to say the U.S. didn't have a hand in what's happening today. We tried to "help" the Taliban by colonizing Afghanistan, or at least attempting to. The Afghanistan and Iraq wars are American Imperialism at its finest. Bush is the one who put us in Afghanistan in the first place. Obama said he'd get us out. So did Trump. Biden actually did it.

What's happening in Afghanistan is awful. We should be helping Afghani refugees in any way we can. But we couldn't stay in Afghanistan forever. This is where my work with veterans comes in.

I talk to vets on a literal daily basis unless it's the weekend. Most of them are Vietnam vets, a very good portion of them are Afghanistan vets. They don't blame Biden. Why are Vietnam vets important in all this? Because the war in Afghanistan is our generation's Vietnam. The only differences are that we're fighting terrorism instead of communists, and people aren't spitting on Afghanistan vets when they come home.

Both wars were unwinnable. And vets from both wars feel as though their efforts, their trauma, and their losses were in vain. I have Vietnam vets who are experiencing heightened PTSD symptoms due to what's happening in Afghanistan because it reminds them too much of what happened when they came home from Vietnam.

No one is even fully sure when the Vietnam war started. There's tons of debate over what the "tipping point" or official start of the war even was. There was too much going on historically to pinpoint an exact cause other than the Truman Doctrine told us we have to fight communism so I guess it's boots on the ground time. Afghanistan is very similar. We may know when American soldiers started going over there and what the war was supposedly about but there is too much history to unpack the exact cause of what's happening. Which is why it isn't Biden's fault.

I'm not a fan of Biden by any means. I preferred him as the grandpa VP who was known for getting caught swearing on mic. But he got us out of Afghanistan, which is long overdue. Nixon probably would've been viewed similarly had he not extended the Vietnam war for political purposes, as well as, you know, try to rig an election by spying on the Democratic party and oh btw one of those spies was Ted Bundy.

Biden doesn't deserve half the shit he's getting over Afghanistan. You can sit in echo chambers and eat up what the Fox News propaganda machine is feeding you for dinner all you want. You can also hate Trump and Biden equally and blame both of them for this situation. You can even send George W. Bush hate mail telling him this is all his fault. But that doesn't mean you're right.

I am by no means an expert on the subject, but I've had enough exposure to the history of various U.S. wars and an education that afforded me some semi-decent analytical and critical thinking skills. If I've made mistakes in terms of historical facts (like dates, you feel I left something out) I'm here to listen to that and update my post as necessary. But I'm not gonna sit around and watch y'all blame Biden or even Trump for this. We can't blame anyone alive today for what's going on. All we can do is help refugees and hope that one day Afghanistan becomes a more peaceful country as Vietnam has so that everyone who unfortunately has been or will be displaced by this can go back to their homes without fearing for their lives, futures, or the futures of their children.

I really hate those people who feel the need to call out stories they think are fake. Like yeah maybe a police officer didn’t show up to your house and need a shock blanket because of something that happened on Supernatural or whatever is popular now. But like, is that story hurting you? There are also tons of stories out there that could be real but no one believes it because it sounds fake. This weekend I went out to a burger joint with my boyfriend to celebrate the Biden win and we sat at a long table facing a window so we could people watch and this old man came up, tapped on the glass, pointed at me and then gave my boyfriend a thumbs up and a huge grin. None of our friends believe it when we tell that story but it happened. Sometimes weird and funny shit just happens and sometimes it doesn’t. That doesn’t give you a right to be a dick to people on the Internet.

Just sitting in math lecture and Zac (prof) tells us he’s gonna teach us this really complicated method that we shouldn’t use on the exam so obviously someone asks when we should use it and of course Zac says never so we ask him why we’re learning this and he just did not respond.
