Endless studying.

Grad school is making me feel very alienated, and not for whatever usual reasons…

Legit, the courses aren’t even that hard, so I hve time to do other things that I want to.

But I’m in a hybrid setting where some of us are in person, and some of us are online. I’m online.

Us students who are online are treated very differently. We’re not allowed to have our cameras on, we’re not allowed to turn on our mic unless it’s something important, the professor keeps the camera off so we’re not able to see her or the other students, we’ve complained about not being able to hear some of the students in class but they won’t do anything about it, everything we say is refuted but the in person students are always right (even when they say the same things we do). Even though in person students sometimes go online when they can’t make it in, they weren’t included in an email about “proper zoom etiquette”. When we couldn’t hear the sound to a documentary that one professor wanted the class to watch together, she literally said “oh well” before a student in class got up to fix it. She was literally going to make us watch the video with no sound. The in person students all get to go on trips together to different museums in order to see behind the scenes, paid for by the program. You know how it feels when you’re talking about something important to you and someone just says “okay” and goes to talk to someone else, or just ignores you? This is legitimately happening every day to us in class, and it’s infuriating.

It’s not like I’m online because I want to be. I’m online because I’m disabled and can’t live by myself in a state that’s 12 hours away from anyone who knows me. Hell, I can barely live alone 30 minutes away from someone who knows me. This is just another example of how I get treated less than just because I’m not able bodied. As an academic, who wants to continue being an academic, academia is so ableist and gatekeepy and bullshit.

First time drawing lil baby man.

Last night I wrote a thing with BB and Danny and then was struck with the idea: if Beast boy can turn into any creature he sees (he’s turned into aliens, demons, and cryptids before) then… why not lil baby man??? He has a friend now!!

I thought Time was the straight main to the chain's shenanigans but in reality he used to be just like them and so doesn't personally see anything really wrong with their behaviour.

However where he's matured into simply acknowledging the outsider 'normal' view, Warriors internalised it before even donning the hero's scarf and has always been too conscious of how he's perceived.

I think I've said it before but Warriors didn't have a traditional adventure like the others, cities and towns aren't just pitstops for him so he respects infrastructure and social decorum. Plus he's used to minding his reputation and maintaining his perfect image. Whereas most of the others had the freedom to act pretty much like cryptids, showing up out of nowhere, spawning local legends and then disappearing after doing only slightly more good than harm.

Even without that pressure Warriors is still holding himself to that standard and even extended it over the others. Had they actually done something weird Time would've have called them out on it, but he didn't in this case because a bit of parkour is like...fine? It's really not that big a deal. They didn't break anything. I just find this aspect of the Captain's character interesting.

Spring is here and I'm recovering from sickness, everything seems so bright! I've been reading a lot, this month. My brother and I planted some flower seeds and they're not doing well. It looks like I still don't have a green thumb, unfortunately. I am also trying to catch up with school. As always.

(This post feels a little bit unsteady but I didn't expect less after this long.)

I'm currently reading Three Anatolian Legends by Yaşar Kemal. And, surprisingly, I'm listening a lot of Lana Del Rey these days.

Just finished up my internship (it was actual hell to be honest, not what I signed up for at all) and grad school starts in three weeks! I was really lucky that my professors are willing to work with me to learn online because of my health. Now I just need to buy my books and wait!
