hunger games au where Elphaba and Galinda become the star crossed lovers from different districts upon their refusal to kill one another in the arena. They’re declared the winners in a rush to prevent no victor coming out alive, but unrest stirs in the capital, this is unheard of, it by all means should not be allowed.

The third quarter quell falls upon them, Elphaba is the only female victor in her district, she’s prepared to go into the games again, knowing full well she won’t win, but at least Galinda will be safe, there’s multiple male and female victors from district one. Only to find herself stooped horrified as she watches Galinda voluntarily volunteer not once, but a second time in two years on live television.

They’re both going back into the games and there’s no way the stunt they pulled last year will work a second time. The revolution stirs underfoot, the arena is destroyed and Elphaba wakes on the hover craft to find that Galinda is in the captial, they didn’t save Galinda.

It takes weeks, watching those terrifying broadcasts from district thirteen. Fiyero, another victor, is no less tossed by each interview.

They prose a recuse for the captured victors that goes off without a hitch, almost too well. Elphaba’s guts are in knots the entire time, only untangling when receiving the assurance they’ve arrived, they’re safe, the recon team made it back to thirteen.

Elphaba rushes to the med bay, desperate to see her, whole, alive, safe. She gets to the door of the room, slammed by the terrible truth as wild brown eyes pin her. This is not the same girl from the arena, the girl from district one, this isn’t the girl she loves so much it physically hurts.
