My Aphmau phase claims me once more (it never left)

I’m doing a lil quick sketch series of drawing the Mystreet cast in their regular outfits and their Love Love Paradise fits by how I imagine they would look like irl, so I started off with my fave couple—Zane and Kawaii~Chan !!

I have this headcanon that Zane in MCD is scrawny as hell, but in Mystreet is chubby because of the fact that he takes better care of himself and isn’t obsessing over the relics more than his own human limitations lmao

The live action How To Train Your Dragon movie.

[Spoilers below if you haven’t seen it I do highly recommend watching it first! (Or not totally up to you)]

Disney better be taking notes because this is the first live action remake I’ve seen that genuinely felt like it had a soul and like a real homage to the original. Like wow this is how you make a remake!

It has a very good combination of the vibes and humour of the OG while also being a fucking insanely epic, action filled, and awe striking dragon movie (honestly some of the scenes had be going “oh my god.”)

It wasn’t the best movie I’ve ever seen by any means, nor will it ever be the original, but it was epic in its own right and it was an almost scene by scene recreation with few changes. Almost everything that they changed felt like it fit right in, like it was supposed to and had always been there.

Despite this, I do have a few things that I didn’t quite like that I want to point out:

The first one I wanted to ask the opinion of any people of colour who may like the franchise or read my posts because I do not in any way have the ability to speak for you all (I am very white). There’s one scene at the beginning where Stoick is talking about all of their different peoples that came over from different places and he specifically references a few characters. One of them was black and honestly it felt a little weird the way that they specifically said “your people came from”. It gave me the ick a bit but I genuinely can’t speak for people actually part of that community so I wanted to put this out there as a question, did that feel weird to anyone else?

On another note they did take out that one scene where hiccup is with toothless and he watches toothless blow fire into a terrible terror and he’s like “not so fireproof on the inside huh?” And honestly the movie did work without it so I’m not too mad but it was kinda a crucial plot point in the OG that added a lot more to that end fight plan, but again if I had never seen HTTYD i wouldn’t have necessarily noticed that inconsistency.

They did also take out the scene where Hiccup gets stuck to toothless’s saddle and brings him back to the village but I’m honestly not too mad about that because that scene never made much sense for me because it didn’t really add a whole lot to the overall story and Astrid already suspected him.

(Sad side note for the one bit where Hiccup tries to impersonate his dad… it wasn’t put in and it was sorely missed by me but honestly didn’t detract from the actual movie so it’s fine ig)

AND NOW THE GOOD ADDITIONS:

Astrid played a much more active role in the film. She was a lot more present throughout the entirety of it and she honestly felt a lot more like the astrid we see in the other movies and Race To The Edge. Now, I have a love-hate relationship with OG movie Astrid and I do like her but Astrid in this just felt a lot more real to me. It’s the biggest addition and honestly having it just makes sense. Hiccup also trusts her to take lead of the group when they’re doing the final fight together and that made a lot of sense too because while Hiccup does eventually become a very capable leader Astrid was the one who had already been commanding the group from the beginning.

Hiccup and Astrid’s relationship also felt a lot more real to me. I liked it in the OG but they expanded on it a bit more while still keeping it very similar which I really liked. Astrid’s dislike of Hiccup was also a bit more well explained with her not liking him because he’s the chief’s son and to her he doesn’t seem to understand having to work hard to get somewhere.

They also expanded the initial scene in the beginning where the vikings go into the fog to find the dragon nest and get attacked and I thought that bit actually added a lot because we got to really see at least a bit of what happened rather than just seeing flashes of a dragon.

Another thing I really liked is they chilled out a little with hiccup’s inability to do anything. He’s still very clumsy and not very capable at fighting but it felt like the movie actually acknowledged his smartness. Because he really is very bright (I mean he’s an incredible inventor) and while the OG movie still does aknowledge it (moreso at the end) I feel like it was a bit more there in the live action.

There was also a lot with Snotlout and his dad which initially we didn’t get until RTTE so it was actually kinda nice to see it be worked into the OG movie (although I did think at times it detracted a little from the plot and distracted from the main things going on but only a little and it wasn’t too noticeable).

My final remark is that THE FINAL BOSS DRAGON WAS SO FUCKING COOL AND EPIC AND OMG I LOVE DRAGONS HOLY FUCKING SHIT LIKE IT WAS COOL ASF IN THE OG BUT THEY DID ACTUALLT SCALE UP THE DRAGONS A BIT IN THIS AND HOLY FUCKING SHIT IT WAS LIKE SO FUCKING COOL GENUINELY PROBABLY MY FAVOURITE PART OF THE MOVIE IN TERMS OF HOW EPIC IT WAS.

It depends on which michi we’re talking about tbf!

I really strongly dislike MCD Michi because of her actions. It’s heavily implied that she SA’d Laurance and she also canonically kidnapped, transformed (against their will), and trafficked a multitude of people including but not limited to the main cast.

However, MYST michi is honestly a super interesting character and I dislike the way that she was written a lot because her entire personality is trying to steal Aaron from Aph and it was always weird to me because she could have been a lot more and maybe even a concrete villain or a redeemable annoying side character but instead she was constantly bound by Jess’s narrative. We see this throughout the first few seasons of Myst when she’s constantly trying to get between Aph and Aaron. My least favourite part of the way that she was written is in season 4 because it seemed like we were going to get a Michi redemption arc, she was working with Liochant and she seemed to genuinely enjoy his company and she had the potential to have removed herself from the toxic person she was before. But Jess kind of deleted all of that progress for the sake of pushing forward the plot. I honestly think that MYST Michi had a lot of potential to be an interesting and multidimensional character and instead she just kind of feels like a bit of a cardboard cut out :(

I’m starting to understand why the Lonely is so often depicted as a foggy beach. The feeling of sitting in the sand or on a rock, the sound of crashing waves against the shore and the whisper of wind in your ear your only company. The knowledge that there are people out there, beyond the rolling fog and waves. There is proof that others have been here before you, boats, bouys. but you can’t see them, and they can’t see you, and any attempt you might make to call out to them, to let them know that you are here, is swallowed by the consuming fog and crashing waves. There is nothing more lonely than this.
