I don't know that this nuance really matters, but I don't think Buck is selfish so much as he is self-absorbed. I feel like selfishness kind of has a connotation of like, wanting himself to have things (understanding, support, love) at the expense of others, or greedily grasping those things for himself without caring if others have them, and it's not really that. It's more that when he's upset, he becomes temporarily incapable of getting outside of his own head. He is certainly not indifferent to others' feelings (the grief surveys prove that); he just doesn't really see or understand the way others are feeling, because he's too focused on the way he is feeling.
The only reason I say this is because Eddie actually does the exact same thing, it just manifests in a different way. He is so focused on how he is feeling that he projects it onto others--like accusing Buck of making him choose between him and Chris when he wasn't, or preemptively getting mad at Buck for not being happy about the El Paso job when really he isn't happy about the El Paso job--and then he reacts to the feelings he projected instead of what's actually happening.
But also, it's important to realize that all people get self-absorbed when they are unhappy, and that's not really a true reflection on a person's character. We also see this in the scene with Athena and Karen, when Athena admits she's being unfair, and Karen says, "You're grieving. Fair can mind its own damn business." We are meant to understand that people need some extra grace when they are hurting and are temporarily incapable of seeing past that hurt.

Bobby, I know I do dumb things sometimes and generally drive you crazy. Youāre an important person in my life, Bobby. One of the most important.

After rewatching both scenes I can see that Eddie's attempt to fit in as a firefighter and as a LAFD liaison at the dispatch center has led to some intriguing parallels. These scenes illustrate how Eddie navigated these new work environments differently.
Both Buck and Josh contributed to the tension, whether due to their insecurities or initial negative remarks about Eddie. What's fascinating is how Eddie handles and resolves such tension.
Interestingly, in episode 201, Eddie was the one who acknowledged that something was amiss between him and Buck. Although this direct approach might have been awkward for both, it also showcased Eddie's caring nature and his interest in Buck by confronting him. What's noteworthy in that scene for me is that Eddie had already done his homework to understand Buck and learn more about him beforehand. The body language in that scene was palpable (you could sense the sexual tension in the room, lol).
Contrast that with episode 511, where Eddie's interaction with Josh was nothing short of awkward. In this case, Josh was the one to approach Eddie with his remarks, initially attempting to be friendly but eventually reminding Eddie that he didn't belong to the dispatcher's room. It's worth noting that in this scene, Eddie didn't divert his attention from his tasks to give Josh the same level of attention he had given Buck. Additionally, Eddie readily accepted Josh's comments, possibly because he didn't feel like he belonged anyway, making it easier to go with the flow. However, this reaction failed to resolve the tension, even after months of working in the same place. This was evident in episode 516 during the fire incident at the dispatcher center, when Eddie used Josh's own words to remind him that he is the guest in that house now.
In contrast, Eddie took a different approach with Buck to resolve the tension on the same day. He managed to decipher Buck's code and used the right words to win him over ( but I can't help but highlight Eddie's choice of words here, because it was far from platonic lol).

have you ever asked yourself āWHY do bt stans ride so hard for this ship and tommy in particular??ā.
well, iāve been pondering that same question for months. luckily for me, i have the misfortune of knowing a bt stan in real life and she has unknowingly, through her life choices, given me an inside glimpse into the psyche and environment that is needed to create such a hallucinatory delusion where tommy and buck could ever be endgame.
you need to understand that nothing they come up with is drawn from canon & completely from their twisted minds. like we see ourselves in eddie, buck, hen, etc, because of their backgrounds, they also see themselves in tommy and there's traces of his character in their own lives.
nobody at the 118 cared about his existence unless they needed something (chim asking for a favour/ 118 asking for a helicopter), he got attention from the hot protagonist completely by accident and was flattered, he is not even an afterthought for anyone on screen, his love interest is with him because of difficult emotional baggage he can't unpack, yet tommy stays because he wants the fantasy of a world where he has a family and love.
he doesn't have respect for himself and nobody respects him. his fans see themselves in him, he talks to a character once (tommyravi besteism everyone!!) and suddenly they think āomg they're gonna be best friendsā because that's how they act in real life when a cool person speaks to them.
the fact the actor mirrors the character so well is also why theyāre obsessed with him. the aura of rejection around him by the cast plays into the victim mindset they themselves hold, they are rejected by loved ones & by groups they envy irl.
but more on the character ā when the writers brought back a former 118 character, it couldāve been anyone we hadnāt seen on screen. or it couldāve been someone with a great backstory & sweet & beloved by everyone, someone buck could easily fall in love with.
but they didnāt, they needed this archetype. they needed someone that was not special, not beloved, not interesting enough to delve into, someone they could insert and pluck out of the story whenever needed for the overall narrative. someone that was so clearly not a classic romantic interest so that the audience could easily follow the plotās direction.
unfortunately, the writers didnāt account for how that archetype is the exact type of character that would tug at the hearts of a very few people that see themselves in his unlovable-ness.
they want to see him win so badly cause thatās their twisted way of winning too. completely forgetting heās not a main character nor is he being given the chance at a backstory of his own that doesnāt simply exist to progress the protagonistās story (abby is his ex? really? cmon).
anyway. all this for say, what a fucking loser fanbase man truly the worst of society among us.

On the auspicious day of Christmas, I'd like to remind the buddie fandom that S7 EP4 has made buck canonically a VERY unreliable narrator even to himself, especially when it comes to what he feels for Eddie. Because tell me WHY did he go on length to describe Maddie that he was trying to get Eddie's attention and then ending up telling Tommy that he was trying to get his attention instead....
Can't wait for the writers to make Eddie an unreliable narrator too iykwim š«¢

Having ADHD is so fun because sometimes youre looking for something that you use regularly and definitely put away in a smart and reasonable place and you have absolutely 0 hope of remembering where and finding it. And then other times ur like "hmm I need a some kind of small pointed object. I feel like i remember seeing a paperclip under the left couch cushion a month ago, i wonder if its still there" and it is
