genres i'm tired of:
"feminist retellings" of stories that can already be considered feminist in their own right
"feminist retellings" that fumble the "feminist" plotline so bad it just turns misogynistic
"feminist retellings" that still center around and hinge on men
"feminist retellings" written by people who don't understand what feminism is

unicorn's first ever market day. taking it with me to sell this junk off. i don't actually need money cause it's like. i live in A Cave. it's just other people expect money for goods and services or what the fuck ever. so i loot shit off the weird corpses that've been showing up and sell it in the market. yeah idk what's been killing them no one's ever seen what's been doing it. wait hold on unicorn wants to tell me something.
#chi truly you are a visionary#the irritation and disbelief feels so Palpable#this is what i mean when i say that like#people suspend disbelief and Care when things make them Feel#rather than it being because the thing is extremely believable in some technical/factual sense

Matpat kinda looks like a generic TV president who's part of an undisclosed political party and made so that the show isn't dated in about 10 year.
He has a slogan something like "we must work, TOGETHER!" And is surprising generally liked by the public except for the news media whom he gives scornful looks to.
He's then held hostage by some Middle Eastern paramilitary group/ whatever country the u.s has tensions over at the time of writing, whom the main protagonist, composed of 30% muscle and tattoos, has to almost singlehandedly gun down like fodder in order to save him.
This isn't a slight on matpat unless he's part of a controversy i didn't know about

why be radically exclusionary abt queerness when you could be radically inclusionary instead. let's inflate the numbers. let's become the majority. the sky's the limit

i think the funniest thing about utdr is that toby fox made the "true" ending end with asriel going "oh your name's frisk and you're a completely different person from [PlayerName] sorry for treating you like them" and then the genocide ending has Chara show up like "hi i'm the heart you were piloting. i've been a different person this whole time which you would understand if you paid attention to the vhs tapes. anyways thank you for showing me that everyone deserves violence, including You, [PlayerName]." and kill you. and then the entire thesis statement of deltarune is "you, [PlayerName], are an interloper possessing Kris. Kris does not want you here. Kris wants you dead get out get out get out get out" and we somehow have a not-insignificant amount of the player base going "well they don't actually SAY anything so they're CLEARLY player inserts which means i can give them all whatever binary pronouns i want". i think toby fox should lay a curse upon the internet. not some small potatoes "do you like the red room" nonsense i'm talking straight up earthquakes and fires and shit.

youre monogamous? oh… it’s ethical, right? ethical monogamy? okay good for you! i mean pretty much every monogamous couple i’ve met didn’t work out but maybe you guys will beat the odds! haha. so is it a sex thing? you guys have sex with- just each other? huh. how does that work? i could never do monogamy, i’m too jealous, i’d worry my partner would leave me for someone else instead of dating us both… how do you deal with the jealousy? is it hard? like, how hard? extremely? do you think you’ll break up? i mean in the long run these things rarely work out,

tbh a lot of het shipping in media would become a lot better if writers just let it be weird and unhealthy but didn't try to pretend it isnt because some of the shit they come up with in the cases where this is already applied is WILD

Now in general for any situation you should be looking past the surface and learning the details of the whole thing, really thinking for yourself and forming an opinion rather than relying on who looks like the Real Villain.
But to be honest in any Big Entertainment Corporation vs AI fight you should be calling for Bob Iger to be broken down and the iron in his blood used for new GPUs. Those guys are NOT on your side. They do not want copyright to help the artist, they want as much power over artistic endeavors as they can possibly get. They'd sue you for seeing Mickey Mouse in a dream if they could.
#also their definitions of Why they are against GenAI definitely Do apply to fanart#and even if it didn't#bro im gonna be honest i would still refuse to call this a Disney W#because if you don't understand a foot in the door tactic when you see one then that's peak wishful thinking#also i'll be even more honest#I do not say this as a doomer#but I do not think there is any fundamental way to 'defeat' GenAI#rather we have to adapt human behavior to resist misuse of it

my other hornet nest i'm gonna swing at: hating harry potter and taking action against supporting it is completely justifiable, But people have Gotta stop treating the process of doing so like it's gonna Save The World and Liberate All Trans Folk (often with the implied vibe of a weirdly individualist heroic revenge fantasy where just Hating Rowling Hard Enough is going to Banish Her like she's some kind of evil spirit) imo the main actual material benefit is that it lets other trans people know you aren't against them but I feel like the implied reverse (if you don't do it, you inherently Just Don't Care about trans people after all, and you're evil and selfish) is actually just overblown and kind of counterproductive. and I say that as someone who is nonbinary and also has shitloads of issues with the book and the author. like. similarly to how the act of hating it will Not Save The World, the act of liking it, and yes, even engaging with it, and yes, even spending money on it, imo =/= "does not care about trans people" and honestly even =/= "will Make The World Worse" in a way as direct as people say it will. like yes she does support absolute wretched horseshit but also. the train has kinda already left the station when it comes to the resources she has to do that. she has already laughed her way to the bank. she already has secured dividends and stocks and shit. you can't like, actively vacuum up some of her pre-existing money every time you abstain from Harry Potter. she will keep doing it no matter how much we all cry and beg. and I feel like the insistence that actually those two things Are what it equals just encourages people to either double down and make a specific point of continuing, or to feel like the *only* way to support trans people is to like, offer themselves up for judgment and appraisal and Purge Themselves Of All Sins or else they're Wicked And Defiled in some ontological way... which on the face of it just sounds like a fundamentally exhausting way to pressure everyone else to engage with me. I don't wanna do that. I already often feel like people want Me to do that to fit in with normal society. Why would I keep expecting other people to do it, except My Way This Time? like i know the most common answer is essentially that this is a litmus test of "if they can't even do this, then how are they supposed to do anything else" but I feel like that reasoning is. actually pretty flawed. it treats activism and support as this sort of completely linear level-up system, and belief that people have to like, use media to "train" themselves to handle sacrifice and "prove" themselves "worthy". but like. I am not a god. I do not demand repentance. I do not demand sacrifice. Especially if it's liable to devolve into a purely symbolic ritual Instead of you actually just developing a Real understanding of Why it's good to support trans people, and the fact that "support" generally is better expressed and more impactful when it's about an "additive" action, rather than "limiting" actions. We can all boycott Rowling, a woman who is Already Rich Anyway and can't really actively "lose" money from this so much as "gain somewhat less money" (and it will always be Somewhat. "the rich get richer" is not just a cute phrase, there are multiple interwoven factors at play) We can all do that until the goddamn Sun burns out, but it will have meant Absolutely Fucking Nothing if it just turns into a performative Symbol for "I'm A Good Guy", and people don't also simultaneously pressure politicians for change, donating to causes, doing research, reaching out, etc. Like honestly I think you can and should be free to do that *while* consuming and spending money on Harry Potter, and to decide to to stop supporting it at a later point *if* you want to. You deserve that sort of agency in how to chart your path. You deserve to not have me breathing down your neck about my idea of how your own journey and own life should look. Yes, even if you've also actually done awful things.

the way it is wildly inconvenient to find a new fandom to think about getting more active in when i know full well like 80% of the people in it would probably avoid me for thinking that AI isnt inherently evil and that a lot of the rhetoric against it here literally borders on proto-fascist without even realizing it
we got:
- enemy portrayed as both strong and weak
- the "either with us or against us" no-nuance mindset
- the use of shame and fear to play upon the insecurities of the vulnerable and turn them against others who are ultimately also vulnerable and yet treated as enemies
- glorification of "good old days" in an exaggerated, rose-tinted fashion
- portraying an exaggerated sense of decline, victimhood, and humiliation when the material reality of artist earnings and feedback before/after isn't even reflecting that as a whole
- the elitism and exclusion building in the pro-artist sentiment
- the lack of unbiased research and the general anti-intellectual, overly emotion-based and reactionary approach to all this
- the fearmongering towards something different and new
- the scapegoating
- the glorification of harsh action, shame, and mockery against not *just* AI, but any user and any sympathizer
- obsession with AI being Intrinsically Evil instead of the ways its used being what's flawed + general conspiratorial Downfall Of Civilization doomerist thinking
also the way i have yet to see anyone really productively do something or have a cohesive PLAN for how anyone actually intends to meaningfully resist beyond "just dont use it" (clearly not even working + business and schools can basically just foist it on you whenever the hell they want, which is something I *do* think is an *actual* valid complaint, but people noticeably post way less about that type of issue)
at this point, for all the tears about AI, the naysayers basically seem to serve no materially useful purpose beyond forming a virtue signalling in-group for making each other feel better and rooting out any degree of AI optimism or sympathy so that anyone who *does* admit to using it has to adopt the language of being some kind of pathetic drug addict and not like. a guy with a hobby.
(I promise you, the person using it to have that RP they're too ashamed and self-conscious to have with anyone else is nowhere even remotely on the same level as the bigwigs who are making bank largely off of stocks and venture capitalists and will therefore be pretty much unharmed even if this guy and a million other guys give up the hobby forever. hence another part of why your movement is pretty much materially flaccid and toothless.)
(I will also bet you a cool 50 bucks that there are people in your midst who still use it recreationally and just parrot all the hate and reblog the jokes against it to fit in)

thinking about how i feel like detention is kind of just a waste of everyone's time and likely only rarely actually helps
(and when it does, likely does so by creating an anxiety/fear response that restricts a certain behavior at the cost of breeding resentment and harmful knock-on effects later)
like. im pretty sure that when you put kids in detention. 90% of the damn time they already know what they did was wrong, and aren't really learning remorse so much as "I should be sneakier next time" or "this was literally outside of my control but go off i guess"
It's even more bullshit when its for a preparedness or dress code mistake and not even an actual harmful action
Like why the fuck do you gotta go to the office because you forgot your belt??? Who is it hurting that you forgot to put a belt on???
What is the point of punishing people for falling asleep in class???
Is it really gonna make them sleep better at night if they're so scared of not being able to sleep and then getting in trouble for being tired that it turns into a vicious cycle???
which is just another part of my broader issue with how i feel like so much of school's institutional structure is based completely on outdated science and Vibes. (in the sense of parents thinking "well this is how i did it so this must mean it's good" without much of any further critical thinking)
hm.
almost as if the typical school just... isn't very good at teaching the typical person critical thinking in the first place???
and its not even some dig at public schools. the most up-its-own-ass place i went in this regard was 100% a private catholic school.
like yeah they *try* to teach you critical thinking but like. i feel like trying to in a way that keeps making it seem like a chore and dredges up a bunch of painful memories just backfires by subconsciously conditioning people to avoid it and helping to sow the seeds of anti-intellectualism?
yeah we all make jokes about how a bunch of people weren't paying attention in class and shouldn't complain that their school didn't teach them something
but like
if keeps coming up as a widespread problem i think that indicates that the school system does in fact still have a problem it has a responsibilty to solve, and that it simply including the material at all shouldn't be immediately taken as some inherent W
#school#school issues#education#truly i am so disillusioned with academia at like basically every stage
