following my meme post the other day, and talking to friends further on the subject of fat characters in art, especially in fandom, i figured some people might like a tutorial on how to draw them.

Know what I’m salty about?
In all my art classes, I was never taught HOW to use the various tools of art.
Like yes, form, and shape and space and color theory and figure drawing is important, but so is KNOWING what different tools do.
I’m 29 and I JUST learned this past month that India Ink is fucking waterproof when it dries. Why is this important? Because I can line something in India Ink and then go over it with watercolors. And that has CHANGED the ENTIRE way I art and the ease I can create with.
tldr: Art Teachers: teach your students what different tools do. PLEASE.

I got a new laptop, and as celebration, I drew a portrait of Citrine to get back into drawing digitally!
She was one of Pink Diamond's Citrine guards that Yellow gave her when they gave her Earth. Although halfway through the war, she was recalled back to Homeworld, and given to Onyx as a guard, and eventually they both found themselves on a small colony run by a Bixbite. It was forgotten, hidden by the gem, away from the Diamonds. Neither could possibly know what upheaval it would cause, to all of gem-kind...
Citrine is impulsive, but very brave, often charging headlong into the fray to save Onyx or Pearlie. However, she is not the most intelligent gem, and can be a bit moody at points, though she's usually quite bright in terms of personality. She's very attached to Pearlie and Onyx, and gets along well with others.

Oh no! I accidentally made a design challenge for myself adorable and I love her!
This is Grey Spinel. She was inspired by Betty Boop, but I referenced Jessica Rabbit a lot too, but I also wanted her to have that sharp design White Diamond has. Her animation is also Rubberhose, like Spinel, but she's more of the old singing animated cartoons from the 30s. Her eyes change shapes with her mood, and move around a lot when she sings for White. When she sings, she's got that bouncy sort of movement like Betty Boop, to where when she's standing still she's still moving.

Finally, the inescapable Lapidot fusion, Paraiba Tourmaline! Shes possibly one of my favorite fusions I've made. Also, yes, she does talk to Lapis and Peridot lmao. She likes to include them when she's out and about, so she talks to her components. I had the idea that when Lapis and Peridot first fuse, their fusing causes a rainstorm to roll in and when they start realizing they fused, they look at the raindrops falling on their shared arms and that's when they realize "WE FUSED??? AND ITS... OK??"
I didn't have a theme for her, except maybe buggy? I kind of wanted their eyes and wings to be more bug-like, and their visor, too.

Steven introduces Cobalt to "The Pokemans"
Tumblr media
May I present to y'all... my Lapis/Bismuth fusion, Cobalt! I honestly don't have a ton written about her, except she's your cool, slightly manic-depressive aunt that likes to play video games with you even though she has no idea what she's doing. She still calls Pokemon "The Pokemans". She's always up for learning about humans and their rituals, however. Steven introduced her to pottery spinning with Vidalia and she loves it. She likes to create art or Meep Morps, and a lot of her work is focused on humans and the world around her, though she can still make a mean weapon if she feels like it.
I wanted to give her a professional swimmer vibe, and I like how it turned out? Her hair kind of floats (or is at least Not restricted by conventional gravitational laws) like an anemone, and moves slowly and idly around in the air. She loves to distance swim in lava and water alike, and she can control both, like Lapis. Also I really liked Lapis' old design where she was barefoot, so Cobalt either wears those weird-ass water shoes that show your toes or no shoes at all, I haven't decided yet.

I've done some fan fusions before but I've never posted them. But the OT3 gave me feels so here's the first of my fan fusions! This is Pyrite, the fusion of Peridot and Bismuth!
Pyrite is like a mad inventor. She's passionate and animated, and loves to build things and tinker with gem and human tech alike. Her favorite projects are ones that incorporate human and gem tech! The bigger arms can shapeshift like Bismuth, although the lower arms can't. However, the lower arms have Peridot's metal powers, so while the top arms work the metal, the bottom ones shape it.
She also has two mouths! The top constantly mutters the technical side of what she's doing, especially while working, and the bottom only speaks in really, really bad puns. Steven has also wondered if her pockets are bottomless, as he's seen everything from destabilizers to fire extinguishers pulled from them.

Hi, I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but I adore your arcana style cgs and I was wondering if you had any tips for replicating the arcana style?
m, this is a bit tricky to answer because I’m not confident enough in how I draw the style to make any sort of guide. But in trying to replicate it, I kind of noticed some things?
Note: I like to learn styles through deconstruction and looking at processes. I recommend watching the CG timelapse at 0.25x speed here (x) and looking at some of the CG process/concept art here (x)
Please forgive the rambliness of this under the cut. These are just the notes I make to myself when I try and figure out a style.
