Jongin had always felt different. He danced with a firey charisma onstage yet hadn’t mastered the art of giggle control when anything came close to demanding that same charisma or sex-appeal in real life. People had sometimes pointed out the dichotomy of Kai/Jongin, and now that Jongin realized that the stage was a form of escapism for him, he had learned to separate them like the black and white of the moon from the sky. It was a paradigm that left his members, and more importantly his fans, confused. 

Jongin wasn’t sure what he was escaping from. 

Was it his droll real life? A painful introversion? Media scandals? A deeply psychological need to be loved and lauded while also wanting to be left completely alone the second he stepped offstage? He didn’t know.

Jongin felt, in his own mind, like he was between the hyper-sexual man he showcased on stage and the shrinking violet he appeared to be offstage. As he moved Kyungsoo hyung closer to Minseok hyung to say a more proper goodbye before the eldest left for the military, he was empathetic. As he cried in the older man’s arms, he was caring. As he gave Sehun advice not to step too hard on the fourth turn in the following goodbye dance or else he’d slip again, he was analytic. And as every muscle coiled and sprung in time to that music, it was a product of hours of focus, control, self-determination and drive.

He was 23 when he first felt the heat cooking under his skin. He kept to himself instead of seeking another member out. He did research. He rubbed every type of ointment in the book on his arms and legs, trying to quash the rising furor. One moment, he was in the bathroom of the dorm and the next he stood nude in middle of the woods near his house, covered in cuts, splinters between his toes, fearing drugging or kidnap. He spun in frenzied circles, hearing every branch rustle, feeling blood running down his knees, and letting out an involuntarily howl at the snapping of branches that was surrounding him.

Scent smothered his senses. The other wolves appeared and slowly morphed into familiar bodies; faces.

For the last two years, Jongin has been home.
