CALLING ALL ARTISTS!
(Bring Your Own Beamer, BYOB)上海。
You are invited to submit to Bring Your Own Beamer (BYOB) Shanghai. BYOB is a series of one-night international exhibitions where artists bring their own beamers (projectors) and explore the medium of projection by creating a collaborative happening of moving light, sound, installation and performance. Visit byobworldwide for documentation.
This year, BYOB Shanghai will project onto the unique architecture of 1933老场坊.  Its original structure was intended as an operating abattoir (or slaughterhouse), but in years passing also functioned as a factory and cold storage facility. It was later restored and refurbished to its current state.
In light of the history of the building (and Shanghai’s unique role in contemporary China), BYOB Shanghai wants to explore the symbolic nature of beginnings and endings on loop. Where do beginnings end? Where do endings begin? How do time and motion begin and end, again and again?
BYOB Shanghai artists are encouraged to explore this BEGIN / END / LOOP theme, in hopes of engaging in the past, present and future inevitable cycles of life, while also referencing the video/film and sound mediums they will be experimenting with.
1933 老场坊 offers a myriad of possibility for projection, on walls, floors, pillars, ceilings, stairs and projecting walkways. Artists should consider pushing DIY boundaries in using the unique architecture of this slaughterhouse to explore the medium of projection through various means, including slide-projectors, overhead projectors, video/film projectors, lasers, moving light, installation, live VJ-ing and music/sound.
To submit your work to participate in BYOB Shanghai...
The simple terms and guidelines:
Email a proposal including your installation ideas with samples and/or your portfolio to Margot, Michelle and Tina at [email protected]. We will consider your content based on the overall theme and will contact you in a timely manner to confirm your participation in the show.
Submissions are due no later than October 8th , 2014.
Bring your own beamers/projectors, video playback devices, speakers, extension cords and etc. We are not responsible for providing your equipment or accessories. This is to stay true to the DIY nature of this Bring Your Own Beamer exhibition series.
Installation will be the morning of the exhibition November 8th, 2014, starting at 10am. The exhibition will last from 7:30pm to 10:30pm. Artists are encouraged to arrive early for a timely install in case of last minute troubleshooting for unforeseen technical issues.
Tear-down: All artists must disassemble their installations, projections, and equipment following the end of the exhibition, that same day.
Participants are responsible for the safety of their own equipment. Please keep an eye on your equipment at all times and make sure to secure all items appropriately to avoid any damage to the building or your things.

About BYOB
Tumblr media
BYOB (Bring Your Own Beamer) is a series of international do-it-yourself one-night exhibitions where artists experiment with the medium of projection. BYOB originated in Berlin, Germany in 2010 by artists Rafaël Rozendaal and Anne de Vries and has since grown in worldwide popularity, expanding the DIY experience to cities across the globe. On Saturday, November 8th, 2014, BYOB Shanghai will project onto the surfaces of the historic building 1933 老场坊, situated in Hongkou District, North Bund. Each artist will have just a few hours to set up and install a projection-based installation art piece in the space of their choosing (using all of their own materials and equipment) before the location is opened to the public for free viewing.
Tumblr media
Opened in 1933, the building was originally a slaughterhouse conceived by noted British architect Balfours and represents an extraordinary reflection on the vision and ambition of Old Shanghai. Incorporating both Chinese and Western elements of design, the open-air concept with spiral staircases and various angles creates a mysterious blank canvas for moving image, light and sound to infiltrate; wherein artists will transform this notable building into a new space that echoes the ever-expanding and fast-paced city that surrounds it.
Tumblr media
The cycles of construction, refurbishment, and reinterpretation of the building and its usage resonate with the history, development and expansion of Shanghai. Inside a square exterior, 1933 老场坊 has a circular inner structure whose repetitive nature instills a metaphorical feeling of time in motion, beginning and ending, again and again. This feeling sparked the inspiration for the curatorial theme of BEGIN/END/LOOP , which also references looping in experimental film, video and sound mediums.
Tumblr media
BYOB Shanghai’s collective of artists are not limited to the flat surfaces of concrete walls, but are encouraged to engage in the remarkable architecture of 1933 老场坊, to project on walls, floors, pillars, ceilings, stairs and projecting walkways.
Artists will interpret forms of projection through various means, including slide projectors, video/film projectors, lasers, lighting, installation and live VJ-ing to investigate and illuminate the theme of beginnings and endings on loop A series of curated sound and music performances will also accompany the exhibition, helping to create an ambiance and soundscape as unique and memorable as the building itself.
