‘I will speak, I will act.’

I know a lot of my followers don’t follow American soccer, but all sports should be using San Diego Loyal as an example.

Last week, Elijah Martin was called a racist slur by Omar Ontiveros during a game versus LA Galaxy II. This was heard by multiple players, referees, and coaches, even though Ontiveros wasn’t ejected or punished for the slur. The SD coaching staff didn’t hear of this incident until after the game. Because of this, SD forfeited the point they earned from this game and all Loyal players took a knee before last night’s game. Last night (September 30th), Collin Martin (who is an openly gay midfielder for San Diego, and who has been out for over two years) was called a homophobic slur during a game against Phoenix Rising FC. Again, the player wasn’t punished even though many heard what he said. The Loyal manager even asked the other team to pull the player, and they refused.

In protest, the entire team walked off before the game had even finished, even though they were winning 3-1 and fighting for a playoff spot. This game was vital to their playoff hopes, but to the Loyal, meant nothing next to these incidents. More info here.

Landon Donavon, who is the Loyal manager, made this statement after.

“We went through a really hard incident last week in the LA match and we made a vow to ourselves, to our community, to our players, to the club, to USL, that we would not stand for bigotry, homophobic slurs, things that don’t belong in our game.” and also added “If they’re not willing to act, then we have to act.” which is a theme of their organization.

Oikawa Fam backstory

Oikawa Tomiko: She’s the department head at a major company (think generic high-powered salarywoman). She took maternity leave when Toshio and Tomoe were born (in her early and late twenties respectively), but her career was firmly established by the time Tooru was born (he was a bit of a surprise). She decided to keep working from home when he was a baby and returned to work full-time soon after. She’s kind of a workaholic but loves her kids and loves her super cute husband! Tomiko loves shopping, but mostly buys outfits for her husband because she loves dressing him up and showing him off at office gatherings.

Oikawa Haruto: He’s a nurse who works primarily in pediatrics. Has strong empathetic and paternal senses. When the kids were younger, he worked a part-time night shift so he could take care of them and so they didn’t have to go to daycare as often. He loves all of his kids, but Tooru was always quieter than Toshio or Tomoe, so when they got into fights, Tomiko would settle things, and he would calm down Tooru who always got distressed over it. Haruto was the one to suggest the name “Tomoe” because he thought it would be fun to continue the “T” naming convention!!!

General parent headcanons: They met in college at a mixer! They were both on their school’s volleyball teams!!! She was a middle blocker and he was a libero!!!!!!!!!!!! They have always been and will always be super lovey dovey and have been caught multiple times by each kid making out somewhere where they’re not supposed to. When they were expecting Tomoe, they got Toshio a pet to teach him responsibility. They ended up naming it Jirou (lit: second son), because they knew they were going to have a girl. They absolutely did not expect Tooru, but he was a welcome surprise.

Oikawa Toshio: (11-12 years older than Tooru) Firstborn son of the Oikawas, born within a year of his parents’ wedding. He’s a businessman with a good balance of charming and serious personality traits, but used to be more impulsive in his youth. He got married to his wife Mari right after college and has a son (Takeru). Used to have a pet axolotl, but when he left for college, he left it to Tooru. When Jirou-niisan died he left work immediately and drove two hours to his family home to attend the funeral. When his parents went back to work, he took care of his siblings. Also played volleyball in school and college; currently plays on his office’s rec team.

Oikawa Tomoe: (4-5 years older than Tooru) First and only daughter of the Oikawas. She is currently attending college at Miyagi Gakuin studying Human Culture. She is very hotheaded and would get into fights with Toshio a lot because she hated his “I’m the boss because I’m older” mindset. She played volleyball for a bit but gravitated towards archery because she thought it was super badass. (Only her brothers know that it’s actually because she wanted to be like Kagome from Inuyasha.) She’s a total closet otaku! Her room is off-limits to everyone but her closest friends and family because it’s full of anime/manga merch.

Oikawa Jirou: (4-5 years older than Tooru) Second son of the Oikawas. An axolotl. Was adopted by Toshio, and given to Tooru when he left for college. Had a lukewarm relationship with Tomoe. (He bit her, she forgot to feed him, grudges were held.) Favorite food- frozen shrimp. Died peacefully at the exceptionally advanced age of 20. (avg lifespan is 10-15yrs)
