Thinking of the larger context of LOTR and like, the fellowship swapping old war stories and shit and Sam just says “Yeah I killed a huge spider…Shelob, I think?”
And Gandalf just blinks and is like, “You what now?”
“Yeah, killed it. Had to save Frodo”
Gandalf elects not to tell Sam that he killed the spawn of a primordial demon.

“And I appreciate the fact that I could remind him [Denis Villeneuve] of moments in the book that I thought were cool to bring back— like the sign language, which we didn’t really talk about at first. And I thought that’s a really cool moment where we can activate her knowledge and how she communicates with her soldiers. And he was all up for it. And then we started doing it.” - Rebecca Ferguson
“Denis and I also talked about some elements of the book that could not be included in the script - the sign language Jessica uses to read to communicate secretly with Paul and his guards. Later I suggested to Denis that we use it…” - Rebecca Ferguson

It's fight choreography microanalysis time (my favorite!) tonight featuring: how Paul gets stabbed in the duel with Feyd-Rautha.
First of all: our combatants and their weapons. This will be helpful for keeping track of what's going on.
Paul, as he has been for most of the movie, is fighting with Jamis's crysknife:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Keep your eye on the distinctive black and silver handle.
The emperor's blade that Feyd-Rautha fights with looks like this:
Tumblr media
It's somewhere between a long knife and a short sword, with a symmetrical, double-edged blade with a diamond pattern engraved on it. The hilt is all black with some kind of small jewel or metal inlay.
Their whole fight is super intense and SUPER fast; even watching it slowed down there are shots where there's too much motion blur to see what's going on clearly. But basically, on one of the last moves, Paul lunges; Feyd dodges and is able to grab Paul's knife arm and pull it down and around:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then he's able to grab Paul's hand/wrist and force Paul's arm inward toward his body enough that Paul stabs himself with his own knife. (Something something self-destruction, self-inflicted wounds, very nice.) This happens in like, a second.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Feyd's not using his own knife to stab here at all; he's just using that hand to lock Paul's wrist.
Once the knife is in there, Feyd grabs the hilt and gives it one final shove to make sure it's really in there.
Tumblr media
When they break apart, Feyd still has control of his knife. Paul also has his knife but uhhh not where you'd want it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then, Feyd comes in to finish the job, aiming for the heart.
Tumblr media
Paul grabs the knife blade with his right hand.
Tumblr media
I don't know how much of a plan he really has here, but he's able to drag the knife blade far enough to the right that he gets stabbed in the right shoulder instead of the heart or the throat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Obviously Paul's trying not to get stabbed somewhere fatal, but while Feyd's (and our) attention is on the knife blade and Paul's right hand, he's also using his left hand to pull his own knife out of his side. This happens out of frame; you can sort of see his left shoulder moving a little but it's not really clear what's going on. So in addition to trying to get stabbed in the least damaging place, I think he's also trying to buy time to get the knife out.
If you're trying to pull a knife out of your left side with your left hand, the most logical way to do it is to grab the knife handle in a fist with your thumb facing up and pull it straight forward out of your body. Then, Paul just has to flip his wrist around and pull his hand in against his torso and the knife blade is pointing outward directly at Feyd.
Tumblr media
So when Feyd does that final thrust of the knife into Paul's shoulder, he is simultaneously impaling himself on Paul's own knife that's now between their bodies.
Tumblr media
In conclusion:
Tumblr media
Don't try and out-crazy Paul Atreides.

Oh I realized a thing about the Paul/Feyd-Rautha fight. So usually if you have a big fight scene, but especially if you do something like have a character get injured in a way that would definitely be fatal if they weren't cursed with inescapable Main Character Energy, you follow up the fight scene with some moment of comfort or relief or something, which serves to release the tension for the audience and let them know whew, that was scary, but it's okay now. Your character is hurt but they're gonna survive. (Or alternately, if they're dying heroically, it was worth it and what the narrative demanded.)
But here there's nothing. Paul is surrounded by devoted followers; his mother; his lover; one of his oldest teachers and a loyal servant of House Atreides. No one steps forward to offer a shoulder to lean on or help him to his feet. He's left them all behind. He's not a person who got hurt in a fight anymore; he's a myth that people shrink back from. So he pulls the knife out by himself. He stands up by himself. Other than the emperor very begrudgingly touching his hand to kiss the ring, I don't think anyone touches him at all for the rest of the movie. He's completely alone. They never release that tension, because Paul's alive but it is very much not going to be okay.
