The French Garden style is characterized by symmetry, order, and geometric design. These gardens were meant to show control over nature, which in turn showcased the influence and wealth of the garden owners. It was a symbol of power in the sense that if you have control over nature, you must be quite important, perhaps even royality. While in Paris we saw one of the most prominent examples of the French Garden which is known as the Jardin des Tuileries. This is one of the most influential gardens in the world. We walked through it from the famous public square Place de la Concorde all the way to the Louvre which is one of the best museums in the world. As seen in my photos there is complete symmetry in everything from the trees to the buildings. The control over nature is exemplified here even in the bushes which are trimmed in various designs and shapes. There is clear sense of geometric design here and it was interesting to see the harmony between architecture and nature through this French Garden.

I didn't really get to experience much of Southern France because I was sick for nearly the entire time we were there. Which was disappointing. However, I did really enjoy Spain especially when we visited Barcelona. I liked the surrounding area where we were staying. In Barcelona my favorite structure we visited was definitely the Barcelona Pavilion. I thought it was very cool how influential this structure alone is on modern architecture. The structure in a way is timeless because unlike the majority of the structure's we visited it was not influenced by architectural practices of its time but rather it was something else entirely. It's also wild to consider this structure is around 100 years old but you see the same stylistic approached used today. My favorite part of the structure was highlighted in our conversation after when we discussed how the structure is one space, and not really even a room which makes it a very distinctive architectural moment. Regarding my personal objectives for trip, I feel like I'm legitimate good friends with plenty of the people on the trip. My final personal objective was to notice how cultural tendencies differ depending on where we are, and I found it interesting how in Spain a bunch of places close down in the early afternoon or engage in what they know as "siesta".

BLOG #16:
With the population booming they created the M30 to help with navigation but it created a lot of noise pollution and air pollution. This drove all the animals away and the environmental zone was dying. In 2006 they buried the M30 underground and decided to put a linear park overtop. They reclaimed 7500 acres for people to use and planted 33,000 trees. They invested in this dead environmental zone by refurbishing 7 dams to help the river which was down to a trickle and created fish ladders. They put money into community values and investing in the people by creating 33 sports fields. This location has inspired countless different parks and by investing in the community they turned an atrocity that was the M30 into a beautiful location. So yes this park was a good investment regardless of how pricey it was

Madrid and Barcelona, as rival cities exhibit distinct architectural styles mirroring their cultural differences. Madrid, the Spanish capital and political center, showcases neoclassical and art deco influences, while Barcelona, a more modernist like hub, boasts avant-garde structures like the Sagrada Família. The cities' economic trajectories are quite different with Barcelona historically seen as more economically poised. Madrid had a weaker industrial base, more limited entrepreneurial tradition, and was more disconnected to the business of the outside world by not having something like the Port of Barcelona. However Madrid managed to surpass Barcelona economically in the 1990s and now leads in GDP percentage. In order to dismantle the “Grey Barcelona” stereotype leading up to the 1992 Olympic games they worked to rid the city of the boring “grey” area which was a result of rapid industrialization. In the early 2010s Madrid passed the Catalonia area in percentage of spanish GDP. Madrid also holds a higher likelihood for higher education and serves as the political influencer, leveraging its political prominence

Two notable structures, the Sagrada Família and Park Güell in Barcelona, exemplify Gaudí's aesthetic prowess where he draws much of his inspiration from nature which would help invoke emotion in the person viewing it. The Sagrada Família, a monumental basilica, showcases Gaudí's unique approach to Gothic architecture. The intricate facades are adorned with symbolic details and natural motifs. The presence of light through stained glass windows creates an atmosphere that evokes emotion. It was interesting are the windows were a whitish color. In Park Güell, a public park designed by Gaudí, his aesthetic is expressed through different forms and vibrant colors. The serpentine bench layered with colorful mosaics encourages communal interaction and lounging. The unfamiliar shapes transform the park into a fantastical realm. I really liked the illusion created by all the tightly packed columns

The Dali Theater-Museum shows two exemplary examples of a surrealist approach to art. The first is displayed in the first photo. The architectures vertical inclination pulls yours attention upwards towards the higher up elements on the walls and near the ceiling. The second was a pretty interesting display which was located up the stairs to the right once you entered this larger roomed area mentioned prior. It showcases a face but you have to walk up a set of stairs to look through a mirror. When I was looking through the mirror I started to squint and this arbitrary art resembles a human face to a t. When I was done looking through the magnifying glass I walked down the stairs and took a third picture to display a side angle of this art piece.

At the Foundation Maeght I took a lot of photos but this one spoke to me the most. The reason it spoke to the most is because not only is there a shift in color scheme of props from the wall separation but also in the lighting. Before the wall is very light with all the statues being almost white in color. If you remember the rocks I’m standing on are this same light color. However once you hit the wall in the middle of the image the two art statues switch to black and grey colors. On top of that the lighting at that time of day (Not as clear in the photo) is minimal in comparison of the things in front of the wall. The sun was perfectly aligned for the moment I saw it. It’s almost like the wall is a distinctive separation in color scheme and mood.

Th first aspect of sustainability in the Nice Meridian area is reducing individual carbon footprint by minimizing use of cars and trying to create more of a reliance on public transportation. This goal is also attained in this area by increasing walkability by having area put together not spread out. The way this area encourages sustainability by incorporating efficient draining system to prevent flooding. The next sustainable practice noticed using sustainable building practices and leveraging energy efficient design like solar panels.

Well without a doubt my favorite structure in Italy was the Milan Cathedral. This is the one I was most excited to see because I presented on it. As a result this also checks off one of my personal goals. I knew it was big but it was truly magnificent on the inside and so spacious. I wonder how the place looks when relaying on natural light and candle light not the light bulbs placed everywhere. My favorite part of it was definitely the huge phone advertisement above the entrance. I think Don’t get me wrong they are all great cities but I think I liked Florence the most because in Rome I wasn’t properly adapted so I felt like a zombie and Milan is when I started to get sick.
In Italy alone I completed about half my personal goals. I have gotten a taste of Italy, I did become better acquainted with my classmates, and I did get to see the Duomo di Milano. The goal to sketch all the structures is a little to ambitious because most of these structures are honestly just way to massive and I’m to inexperienced and also the flow of the group isn’t giving me a chance to sketch. I’m thinking about taking pictures of the structures and sketching them all back in the states.

A few of the things I jotted down when walking around listening to him talk about urban design are firstly open area allows people to come. If the space is to condensed then people won’t feel the need or desire to go to the space. While we were walking towards the vertical garden the guide also mentioned water is a great factor to have. I found this interesting as he said it makes the place more climate appropriate in an open space especially on hot days. Later on he would say in the park area “from an acoustic point of view you don’t hear the sound of the cars”. He brought this to our attention as I think this a substantial concern when designing urban spaces. The presence of cars in the acoustic domain brings the rush of the city and what not when oftentimes in these park and nature oriented areas you are going for more of a peaceful environment. He also brought to our attention the importance of individual aspects in these environments. For example trees; in the garden park playground the trees used play a big part. The trees can block the wind, provide shelter, provide smell and the leaves fall off and you walk on them. The tour guide had his booklet with all his images and my favorite of all these images was towards the end of the tour where we showed us how Milan is making more of an effort to incorporate green into the city landscape. I found it really cool how the green in his image circulated the center and diverted out to the far edges of the city’s where they were reconnected with forests, farms, and what not. They are trying to promote sustainability through greenery

Situated in the heart of Italy, Rome in Lazio and Florence in Tuscany seem to be a reflection of the country's diverse cultural richness. Rome boasts iconic landmarks like the Colosseum, creating a dynamic urban pulse, while the local cuisine captures the essence of Roman flavors. Meanwhile Florence offers a serene escape with its Renaissance treasures with things like Michelangelo's David which is such an influential sculpture in art. Tuscany's slower pace of life is mirrored in its cuisine, seen celebrating the region's renowned wines. I’ve drank more wine on this trip so far than I have in my entire life before the trip. The cultural differences between these two regions extends beyond history to the peoples lifestyle choices. In the Lazio region they are known to indulge in something called “passeggiata” where locals leisurely stroll through the city streets in the early evening and this differs somewhat to the tendencies seen in the Florence region

In the Flaminio district of Rome, architects Renzo Piano and Zaha Hadid created something special by mixing the old and the new using a cool idea called "palimpsest." Renzo Piano's Parco Della Musica blends in with the district's history, telling a story that respects the past while adding a modern touch. Zaha Hadid's Maxxi museum implements this idea as well through challenging traditional ideas. By doing this Hadid is contributing to the neighborhoods architectural story. It seems palimpsest in architecture means reworking or reusing land and space to build something new. Both of these artists try to do this to honor the legacy of the place while making room for the architects' new ideas.

Structure on Campus
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The structure I decided to go with on campus is the Clohan hall. Not only is it my favorite dining hall but its architecture is something I have come to appreciate as a result of this class. The top left image I would think is the façade. The architecture style seems to be Neoclassical. The columns follow the Doric order with very simple capitals. The entablature is also very simple with no sight of design on the architrave, frieze, or cornice. The top right image is my attempt to sketch this structure.

My Personal Objectives for Europe
I'm most excited about trying diverse foods from other cultures. Maybe trying Escargot in France avec un verre de vin
I'm looking forward to getting to know my classmates a little better and having this experience with them
The third thing is to sketch all the structures we visit and hopefully by the end of the trip the structures are recognizable
In France I wish to practice my French and truly immerse myself in the culture
To see the Duomo di Milano which I spent so much time researching
To observe cultural tendencies and how these differ based on where we are
