Cas is deeply devoted to Dean. Unfortunately that comes with some consequences because neither of them understand properly what that really entails. And both have so many personal issues they can’t see what they need to see to adjust accordingly.

We can at least take solace in knowing that post-series in Heaven they meet again and finally in a safe environment can probably actually hash it out without putting themselves and the entire planet at risk for once.

okay but riffing more on this moment from 04.16, I think we do really really need to talk about how this little scene with Dean from the end of OTHOAP kind of broke Cas's brain a little.

I am very glad we as a society have been having more conversations about Cas's lone wolf flavored romantic hero knightly chivalry bullshit, but if you ask me, I think a big part of that starts here.

Like, Cas makes the decision post-S5 to leave Dean to his suburban domesticity with Lisa For His Own Good or whatever, but like... a huge part of that is because Cas has seen Dean break down over being asked to carry the weight of the world. Dean lay bloody and beaten in a hospital bed, weeping through a recently-crushed trachea and pleading with Cas to find someone else to take over the burden of responsibility because he couldn't handle it.

Of course this rewires Cas's brain and makes him eventually decide that it is his personal job to prevent Dean from having to carry that burden of universal responsibility ever again.

Naturally he makes a dogs' breakfast of this on a regular basis because Cas, despite being both intelligent and unexpectedly wise, repeatedly crit-fails his WIS checks. (Also because a literal deity or two hate him personally and want him to suffer but that's neither here nor there.) But I think it's important to understand not just that Cas has this tendency to go off to try and solo the final boss by himself every single time there's an opportunity to do so, but also why he's so fixated on specifically sparing Dean from having anything to do with the big cosmic problems if he can possibly help it. And the origin of that, in my opinion, is all the way back in OTHOAP.

Imagine you work at some fucking roadside diner in buttfuck nowhere and you have to wait a table with three dudes who aren't from around here and the guy with the long hair immediately pulls out his laptop with what looks like cult shit in the web browser and asks for your worst salad option, and the guy in the trenchcoat sniffs the pepper shaker and declares the molecules to be very sharp and the guy with the greenest eyes you've ever seen calls you sweetheart and then proceeds to engage with intimate eye contact with trenchcoat to a degree that is downright indecent and then orders the heart attack special on your menu and every time you walk past their table they're talking about that gruesome murder that happened in town and the pretty guy is feeding the trenchcoat guy fries while the hair guy talks about desecrating corpses

This is what gets me every time. Like. They didn’t even mean to but they literally did some I dunno self insert shit with how much they kept trying to get rid of Cas and deny their love story till the very end.

And love still won.

You know. I'm positive I'm just taking an excessive amount of copium but like... I feel like as bullshit as it happened, Dean had to die. Don't get me wrong... I don't like it, I hate it, I would have loved for him to live a long happy life. Perhaps make his own version of the Roadhouse. Maybe live in a sort of duplex next to Sam's family. But within the narrative it just couldn't happen. It can happen in fix it fics because they can suspend some of the story-telling or do things that a network wouldn't allow. But as per the story itself? I mean there are better ways it could have happened, I still think it was dumb to basically imply that Chuck was the only reason they were able to hunt decently. But beyond that, I honestly feel Sam had the less satisfying conclusion to his earthly life and frankly, Cas as well.

As for Castiel, despite the people in charge constantly trying to write him out of the story, Cas was the glue for the show. There is a reason he shows up in most promos and conversations for Supernatural as a whole. Even if you hate him, you can not honestly say that the show would have survived 15 seasons with pretty steady viewership most of that time had it not been for Cas. Both his part in the story itself as well as his popularity (not to mention the Destiel folks who desperately clung onto hope that there would be even a crumb of canonization). So to have him confess then just... not show up at the end? That was uncool. Whether it was for the Covid reasons I've seen rumored or planned all along not to have him show up in Heaven, he should have met up with Sam and Dean at the end. Even just the end shot showing him walking up to them, no words needed. It would have been enough. Just to SHOW them all together.

As for Sam, he had shown character change through the seasons. He even admitted early on that his dreams of settling down was kinda going away. So I really don't think it makes sense for him to just settle down in a little white picket fence life like that after finally permanently losing the most important person in his life. I get some of his acceptance of hunting was because it was with Dean, but I feel a more satisfying, and a more realistic, ending would have been him sort of becoming the new Bobby. He knows the lore. He is good with research. He would absolutely be amazing at being a resource for others, even if he doesn't go into the field. The spark of hunting would be gone when he lost Dean, but he could still help save people. And that was something he was big on.

Dean though, he did have to die. (Though again, don't think it should have been like that.) Dean just... isn't the kind of person to retire happily into the sunset. He was 41ish when he died. He had spent literally his entire life hunting. He said before he didn't want to get old. He just... he would not reasonably retire. He would die hunting. At least the way he did it was a way that he could come to grips with accepting it. At least the way it happened it was clean and gave time for a goodbye.

Also, I don't think he would have been able to live a happy long life without Cas. And I'm not even talking about this in a Destiel tone. He literally was falling apart every time Cas died. He needed two things in his life. Sam and Cas. They were both his soul mates. Cas could have come back at some point and Dean could have then gotten a happy ending like previously mentioned, with a Roadhouse and duplex and whatever. But that would have been cheesy to see on screen and just... not fit.

And also, honestly, the whole reason I even think about this, is just...

"Carry on, my wayward son There'll be peace when you are done Lay your weary head to rest Don't you cry no more"

Any time I hear this song... I am just like... It was time for Dean to have his peace. There is even the line "Surely Heaven waits for you" As much as that song became the unofficial song of Supernatural as a whole, it is mostly Dean's song. I feel, honestly, there is no way that a narrative conclusion could be reasonably reached without seeing Dean die.

It's not his death that is the problem, it's the stuff surrounding it (Sam leading a weirdly plain life, Cas not showing up, it being stupidly unimpressive way to die, etc)

Like, they all live on in Heaven. They're not 'gone' they just moved onto another place to exist. With all the universes and realms of existence, simply departing from the Earth they were living on isn't a sad or a bad ending. Especially taking into account all the time they'd experienced (though not lived) in other realms (example being Hell). It wasn't an ending to them, it was simply an ending to the show, and that is what gives so much grace to the ending itself (like had we not even gotten a Heaven scene or knew Cas got out of the Empty that'd be a different story)

It just really REALLY sucks we couldn't see the whole gang together at the very end. I get it was to end it like how it began with just the two of them. But it's still kinda dumb. Because by the end it wasn't just the two of them. It hadn't been just the two of them ever since Dean called himself, Cas, and Sam "Team Free Will" in season 5.

Every time Cas ran off on his lone wolf, stoic man, isolated hero bullshit they should have let him write Dean tender letters he never expected Dean to read, narrated MWWBK style, I think that would have been so affirming for him, like yes I am doing this for You and You will never know the Sacrifice it takes and the Yearning it begets because I shall Never Tell You so as not to Burden You, My Beautiful, Fragile Wife for whom I Wage this War all the while Dean's digging up graves and telling dumb jokes and getting thrown into walls and jacking it to Dr Sexy and being like, damn wish Cas were here, miss my favourite dude :(
