The steel rail thrummed under the bandit’s boot, barely felt through leather soles worn thin. But faint as it was, the vibration was there and grew stronger with every heartbeat. Still out of sight, the No. 10 to Boldstream was on its way. Right on time, the first overnight train was as punctual as any other of the Cofield trains.

Which was what the elf had been counting on. She took a swig of water from her flask and held it out to her partner in crime, tapping the other bandit’s arm with it. “Thanks,” the taller of the two said. Both were dressed in pilfered clothes, caked with dirt from the freshly laid railway under their boots. Wide swaths of dirt bordered the gravel and tracks, with only the most stubborn of weeds starting to grow in the bare ground. The human took a drink and moved to wipe her mouth on her sleeve. She stopped, thinking better of smearing the dirt into her face, and held the flask back toward the elf.

“Are we still on track?” she asked.

“We’re still standing on the tracks, yeah,” the elf said, deadpan.
