the issue w sondheim not being able to make bobby gay is bc he’s right you can’t change the show to have his suitors be men. however he was missing the fact that bobby is already gay

all of my opinions are roughly the same as intermission + i wish they hadn’t dealt with the genderbending/bobbie’s characterization the way that they did but i will say i vastly prefer andy’s (amy’s) whole plotline and ladies who lunch in this version i think those in particular are made richer

at intermission. having SO many thoughts. i think the staging and the scenic are genuinely brilliant. i think there are some really good choices being made by the actors and the comedy is clean as hell. i also think that it’s missing most of what makes company compelling to me and the core message Does feel misogynistic in this context but also not condemnably so bc they make it work well with bobbie’s characterization she just. should have so much more to her. i think my overall opinion is that this is a Very successful execution of what sondheim and furth wanted company to be. unfortunately i’ve always thought they were wrong about it and didn’t understand their own show

#it’s so. frothy like this #company is not frothy. to me #i think i don’t like company as a straight comedy is what i’m learning. tragicomedy pls #also affirming that merrily is my fave sondheim bc company depends on interpretation so much #high school girl behind me ranting to her mom about how bobbie might be gay or aromantic and she’s not old enough that she needs to get #- married anyway?! I LOVE YOU <3333333 can we be friends #anyway bobbie’s character is like. too clear here which makes her feel more shallow. i don’t think you should really understand them until -#- the climax. but that’s also personal opinion #ted talks #company
