Covid-19: Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine approved for use in UK
The Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine has been approved for use in the UK, with the first doses due to be given on Monday.
There will be 530,000 doses available from next week, and vaccination centres will now start inviting patients to come and get the jab.
Priority groups for immunisation have already been identified, starting with care home residents, the over-80s, and health and care workers.
It comes as millions more in England are placed in tier four restrictions.
The UK has ordered 100 million doses of the new vaccine — enough to vaccinate 50 million people.
Eventually all over 50s and younger adults with health conditions will be offered a jab in the first phase of the rollout — more than 25 million people in total.
It is hoped that about two million patients a week could soon be vaccinated with two vaccines now approved.
On Tuesday, 53,135 new Covid cases were recorded in the UK — the highest single day rise since mass testing began — as well as 414 more deaths within 28 days of a positive test.
Oxford vaccine: How did they make it so fast? How do the vaccines compare? When will you be eligible for the Covid vaccine? Concern at ‘unprecedented’ English infection level

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has authorised two full doses of the Oxford vaccine, with the second dose to be given four to 12 weeks after the first.
The immunisation campaign will now shift to giving as many people as possible their first dose of vaccine with a second dose following within that period.
When the Pfizer-BioNTech jab rollout began, the aim was to give the second dose after three weeks.
But based on advice from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation, the aim now is to give as many vulnerable people some protection from Covid-19, irrespective of the jab they are given.
The Oxford vaccine is easier to store and distribute, as it can be kept at normal fridge temperature unlike the Pfizer-BioNTech jab that has to be kept at -70C.
There is also more confidence about supply as it is UK-made, whereas the Pfizer-BioNTech jab has to be shipped in from Belgium.

Feds Likely to Miss Goal of 20 Million Coronavirus Vaccinations in December
The real number of administered doses is likely higher, as officials report a lag time between giving the shot and its recording on the tracker. Even so, the number is not likely to reach 20 million by Friday.
Leading infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci told CNN on Tuesday that U.S. vaccinations are "certainly not at the numbers that we wanted to be at the end of December."

Japan suspends entry of non-resident foreigners
The Japanese government has suspended entry of non-resident foreign nationals to Japan to prevent the transmission of coronavirus variants.
The measure is taking effect on Monday and will continue through January 31. A similar restriction is already in effect for travelers from the United Kingdom and South Africa.
The government also suspended a conditional exemption of a 14-day self-quarantine that had been applied to Japanese and foreign residents when they reentered Japan after a short overseas business trip.
All travelers returning to or entering Japan from parts of the world where coronavirus variants have been confirmed need to submit a negative test certificate. Such travelers need to take a test within 72 hours before departure and another upon arriving in Japan.

How Canadian citizenship processes may change in the future
IRCC released details of its report on the citizenship program between 2013 and 2018.
A recent immigration department self-evaluation highlights areas where Canadian citizenship processes could be improved.
The report, released in November, revealed Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada’s (IRCC) findings and recommendations on how to address issues in the citizenship program.
As it is now, permanent residents can apply for citizenship if they have lived in Canada for at least three years, among other eligibility requirements. Generally, citizenship applicants must pass a citizenship test, or interview, and prove their language skills in English or French.
IRCC’s self-evaluation covered the period from 2013 to 2018, with previous years taken into consideration. It was done as part of an accountability measure with the Treasury Board, which oversees the funding of federal departments, including IRCC.
They found that out of the more than 2.8 million permanent residents who came to Canada between 2005 and 2015, 50 per cent were citizens by December 31, 2018. A further 7 per cent had applied for citizenship. This is not to be confused with Canada’s citizenship rate, or the percentage of permanent residents who become citizens, which was about 86.2 per cent in 2016. Most permanent residents who get citizenship are motivated by the desire to feel fully Canadian, and to make Canada their permanent home.

Although most permanent residents get citizenship status, citizenship rates vary for different populations. More recent immigrants are seeing a slower citizenship rate, suggesting that people are taking longer to become citizens.
Here is an overview of IRCC’s recommendations on how to improve the current citizenship process.
Cost of citizenship should be addressed
While increases to the application fee over the evaluation period did not have a major impact on overall uptake, IRCC noticed that it was a barrier for certain immigrants. Refugee and families with lower incomes were particularly affected.
Currently, there is no flexibility around citizenship application fees. They run about $630 for adults and $100 for minors under age 18.
IRCC wrote that there is a need to re-examine the fee structure to allow equitable access to citizenship.
In the 2019 federal election campaign, the Liberal Party promised to axe citizenship fees. They have not yet delivered on this promise.
More transparency for knowledge and language exemptions
People who are facing socio-economic challenges in Canada also face barriers to citizenship with the current knowledge and language requirements.
IRCC found that meeting these two requirements can be difficult, particularly for refugees and people with low language proficiency and education. These requirements can be waived on compassionate grounds, but the parameters are not well-defined for these cases. As a result, most waivers end up being issued on a medical opinion.
Waivers have to be requested by applicants, but the process is difficult to navigate and not well-known. There were very few waivers requested during the evaluation period.
Improve language verification process
IRCC found that the range of evidence accepted for language verification is very broad and does not always reflect the applicant’s actual language ability. It can be difficult for immigration officers to assess language ability, as the tools in place are subjective. Furthermore, officers themselves are not formal assessors.
In light of these findings, IRCC recommended creating a strategy to equip officers to validate language evidence and provide better support to assess language ability when needed.
New approach for knowledge requirement
The knowledge test and study guide have higher language level requirements than the actual language test itself. As such, IRCC found that there is a need for more tools and support for applicants.
IRCC is therefore continuing with its plan to implement a new approach for the knowledge requirement. This could include a revised study guide or other tools to improve the accessibility of the required information.
Promote active engagement in Canadian communities
Immigrants who become citizens, generally, have positive integration outcomes. Many feel a sense of belonging to Canada, and their community. They have social connections, and confidence in Canadian institutions. Many perform well economically, and participate in volunteer organizations.
These findings suggest that permanent residence with stronger feelings of connection to Canada have more of a desire to become Canadian.
There was a difference found in employment earnings between citizens and permanent residents, but this was attributable to the socio-economic characteristics of the individual and not due to residency status. Volunteering and group membership also varied by people’s socio-economic situation, but citizens were more likely to participate than permanent residents. Permanent residents who did not intend to apply for citizenship were the least likely to engage in these activities.
These types of community engagement are at the core of the citizenship program objectives, however, IRCC has limited mechanisms in place to influence these outcomes. Most of IRCC’s citizenship promotion activities are currently focused on newcomers.

I’m Asocial and COVID-19 Turned My Life Into an Introvert’s Paradise killen calvin killen calvin Just now·6 min read Image for post 5 excuses I now use for being my hermit self — and I’ve never been happier Lockdown sucks… except for me. Look, I don’t want to make light of the deadly virus nor its terrible consequences. Real suffering is no laughing matter. It also wouldn’t be fair for me to gloat in front of you shit-out-of-luck extroverts. For you, a single day stuck at home feels like what a month of solitary confinement would feel like for me. But I’m going to do it anyway. I used to call myself an extreme introvert. Then I realized I may be what Franco Amati calls asocial. For this reason, social distancing has made my life in 2020 into a living daydream — a waking fairytale! I’m writing this to brag and be a meanie — but also to give voice to my fellow asocialites. I can’t be the only one who couldn’t be happier about COVID-19’s “epidemic of solitude.” Here are 5 excuses I now use for being my hermit self. 1. Oops, I have to stay safe by avoiding social gatherings For most, “Stay home, stay safe” is a sobering reminder of each civilian’s responsibility for defeating this pandemic. For me, “Stay home, stay safe” is a mantra… a way of life… my entire personality… and my excuse for not having to do anything anymore. ^_^ Halloween party? Sorry, I think I’ll do the “responsible thing” (read: recluse thing) and stay home. I’ll listen to ASMR videos while watching bunny rabbits outside the window. I’ll sip jasmine tea, read a book, and bask in a lavender-infused bubble bath. I’ll do every other stereotypical introvert thing under the moon, safe from COVID-19 and safe from pointless small talk. Oh, but my soul withered like a waterless orchid when we couldn’t have that big Thanksgiving reunion… Christmas, you’ll be next to “break my heart.” The only hard part is when people insist on godforsaken Zoom calls. What ever happened to good old-fashioned talking on the phone, my dears? Now when extrovert friends tell me their sob stories of loneliness, I’m unable to jump for joy and throw my unwashed socks in the air like confetti while voice-acting sympathetic. They can see me on the webcam, damn it! Instead, I have to suck it all in and conjure a Jennifer Lawrence-worthy performance of facial sympathy. During this pandemic, I’ve lost what little semblance of social skills I once had. Don’t we all have that excuse? https://emporiododireito.com.br/ultra/us-wo-op-01.html https://emporiododireito.com.br/ultra/us-wo-op-02.html https://emporiododireito.com.br/ultra/us-wo-op-03.html https://emporiododireito.com.br/ultra/us-wo-op-04.html http://www.alda-balkan-youth.eu/vox/us_womens_open_2020-jp.html http://www.alda-balkan-youth.eu/vox/en-us_womens_open_2020-jp.html http://www.alda-balkan-youth.eu/vox/us_womens_open_2020-jp1.html http://www.alda-balkan-youth.eu/vox/en-us_womens_open_2020-jp1.html http://www.gamwelltech.com/xin/us_womens_open_2020-jp.html http://www.gamwelltech.com/xin/en-us_womens_open_2020-jp.html http://www.gamwelltech.com/xin/us_womens_open_2020-jp1.html http://www.gamwelltech.com/xin/en-us_womens_open_2020-jp1.html https://emporiododireito.com.br/ultra/Buffalo-v-Akron-liv-01.html https://emporiododireito.com.br/ultra/Buffalo-v-Akron-liv-02.html https://emporiododireito.com.br/ultra/Buffalo-v-Akron-liv-03.html https://emporiododireito.com.br/ultra/Buffalo-v-Akron-liv-04.html https://emporiododireito.com.br/ultra/Buffalo-v-Akron-liv-05.html https://emporiododireito.com.br/ultra/Buffalo-v-Akron-liv-06.html https://emporiododireito.com.br/ultra/Buffalo-v-Akron-liv-07.html https://emporiododireito.com.br/ultra/Buffalo-v-Akron-liv-08.html http://www.alda-balkan-youth.eu/vox/Buffalo-v-Akron-liv-01.html http://www.alda-balkan-youth.eu/vox/Buffalo-v-Akron-liv-02.html http://www.alda-balkan-youth.eu/vox/Buffalo-v-Akron-liv-03.html http://www.alda-balkan-youth.eu/vox/Buffalo-v-Akron-liv-04.html http://www.alda-balkan-youth.eu/vox/Buffalo-v-Akron-liv-05.html http://www.alda-balkan-youth.eu/vox/Buffalo-v-Akron-liv-06.html http://www.alda-balkan-youth.eu/vox/Buffalo-v-Akron-liv-07.html http://www.alda-balkan-youth.eu/vox/Buffalo-v-Akron-liv-08.html http://www.gamwelltech.com/xin/Buffalo-v-Akron-liv-01.html http://www.gamwelltech.com/xin/Buffalo-v-Akron-liv-02.html http://www.gamwelltech.com/xin/Buffalo-v-Akron-liv-03.html http://www.gamwelltech.com/xin/Buffalo-v-Akron-liv-04.html http://www.gamwelltech.com/xin/Buffalo-v-Akron-liv-05.html http://www.gamwelltech.com/xin/Buffalo-v-Akron-liv-06.html http://www.gamwelltech.com/xin/Buffalo-v-Akron-liv-07.html http://www.gamwelltech.com/xin/Buffalo-v-Akron-liv-08.html https://sqlinjection24.medium.com/c%C3%B3mo-decorar-tu-%C3%A1rbol-de-navidad-con-elementos-naturales-959ffa792404 https://yunusamin.tumblr.com/post/637320983656726528/c%C3%B3mo-decorar-tu-%C3%A1rbol-de-navidad-con-elementos https://tensports13.medium.com/nobody-feels-like-improving-themselves-right-now-and-thats-totally-fine-d2b893fbd9c1 2. No more driving — halle-freaking-lujah Eww, who misses traffic? Plus, people could see me through the windows while I was driving. I’m way too introverted for that. Alas, I have to maintain my Goody Two-Shoes appearances. I’ll just say I’m sorry the brave warrior Uber drivers must put themselves at risk. I’m in sympathy with truckers who chug across highways to deliver quintessential medical supplies. I’m in solidarity with the grocery store saviors and hospital heros who still commute every day to keep our societies functioning. My life depends on those cool-ass folx. My stone-cold heart should wake up and feel intense admiration for them. Maybe it would be easier for me to summon compassion for the virus’s many victims if I could be honest about the fact it made my own life into a paradise. Cuz right now, I feel like some evil pyromaniac who’s happy the whole world’s burning — but I know it’s just a symptom of my lifelong struggle as a misunderstood and suppressed asocial person. Who’s with me? Anyone? 3. I lost my job to COVID-19 and can’t go to work — such hardship In person and on TV, everyone’s so worried about the economy and essential workers and knowing our loved ones are cozy and COVID-free in their little cottages. 5 excuses I now use for being my hermit self — and I’ve never been happier
Lockdown sucks… except for me.
1. Oops, I have to stay safe by avoiding social gatherings
For most, “Stay home, stay safe” is a sobering reminder of each civilian’s responsibility for defeating this pandemic.
For me, “Stay home, stay safe” is a mantra… a way of life… my entire personality… and my excuse for not having to do anything anymore. ^_^
Halloween party? Sorry, I think I’ll do the “responsible thing” (read: recluse thing) and stay home. I’ll listen to ASMR videos while watching bunny rabbits outside the window. I’ll sip jasmine tea, read a book, and bask in a lavender-infused bubble bath. I’ll do every other stereotypical introvert thing under the moon, safe from COVID-19 and safe from pointless small talk.
Oh, but my soul withered like a waterless orchid when we couldn’t have that big Thanksgiving reunion… Christmas, you’ll be next to “break my heart.”
The only hard part is when people insist on godforsaken Zoom calls.

2. No more driving — halle-freaking-lujah
Eww, who misses traffic?
Anyone?
3. I lost my job to COVID-19 and can’t go to work — such hardship
In person and on TV, everyone’s so worried about the economy and essential workers and knowing our loved ones are cozy and COVID-free in their little cottages. Everyone is nobler than a kitten-rescuing saint.
Then you visit an unemployment support group on Facebook, and the posts tell a different story…
Everyone just wants their unemployment insurance (UI). We just want to game the system and get everything the government will give.
Despite of course wanting everyone’s suffering to end, we have a naughty wish this COVID-19 excuse for being unemployed will last as long as possible.
I promise we’re not psychopaths. We’re just introverts. We always longed to live a relaxing, limited-interaction life that doesn’t involve venturing into public too often. Our dreams finally came true under the most freakish of circumstances. We’re so, so sorry for being unbelievably, blissfully, over-the-top EUPHORIC as these awful tragedies unfold all around us.
I understand if you block or unfollow me because of these disconcerting confessions. But I want you to know: 20% of my heart is in the right place.
4. I’m a “self-employed writer” now
What, government? Unemployment ends December 31? No thanks to people’s unchecked extroversion on Thanksgiving, we’ll see if a rise in COVID cases doesn’t warrant another UI extension…
Because I’m really enjoying being a “self-employed writer.” Yes, that’s what I call myself now. I’m pretending your relief payments are paychecks for the brilliant walls of text I spew all over social media subscription sites.
Let’s ignore the fact $100/month in royalties won’t put food on my table once this all is over.
5. I’m not the only one who’s happier thanks to social distancing
My 5th excuse for being a hermit these days? I’m not alone.
Oh, but I am. :)
And some of us like it this way. Let’s consider who else has been secretly, sinfully blessed by 2020:
Germaphobes no longer pressured into shaking hands.
Women no longer harassed on the street. We’re either at home, or have masks hiding our sexy noses. If anyone tried to mess with us, we’d just slap them with a measuring stick and tell them to stay 6 feet away!
Wild deer and feral chickens with a reduced chance of dying every time they cross the road. Stay home, save nonhuman lives too.
Homebody schoolkids who are sssoooooooo disappointed every day feels like a snow day. Now they can half-ass online quizzes in their PJs and get back to doing whatever they really want to do — which probably doesn’t involve being stuck in a class of 29 other students when you’re as introverted as a free-roaming moose.
Fellow supporters of sane governance. Now we don’t feel obligated to visit relatives with Trump banners above their doorstep. I’m always afraid when I walk under that thing, I’ll come out wearing a MAGA hat.

Mothering as a Brief Timeline of Overarching Disappointment
My relationship with my daughter will always be complicated
Being a mother was something I always wanted, despite (or because of?) my own childhood. Let’s just say my own mother was less than nurturing and had a violent, nasty streak that meant my psyche was hammered out on an anvil of fear, forged in survival. I knew I could do better, and I did. I wasn’t perfect, mind you, but damn near good enough.
My daughter is striking. Olive skin, blue eyes, tall. Taller than I. Her lineage is indigenous Australian, but it’s a heritage that’s hard to pinpoint just by looking at her. She could be Greek, Italian, Spanish. While I celebrated her bloodline, she is ashamed and does not want to know her history. Australia is racist country and Aboriginal people are, unfortunately, not highly regarded. When she met her boyfriend, now fiancée, she gave me strict instructions to “not tell him what I am”.
I often wonder whether that feeling of deep shame, an internalised reflection of how Australian society views her Aboriginality and hence her, has somehow been projected onto her relationship with me. Except the shame has been twisted into a diluted form of contempt. Contempt of me, and what I represent. According to my daughter’s world view, I am not the kind of mother she should have. She wanted a mother that was not me. Someone who wasn’t adventurous, free-spirited, unmarried.

I met my daughter’s father at a karaoke bar one Friday night after work. I was almost my daughter’s age now. He was dark and handsome, but not so tall. Fit and lean. I discovered, later, that he was a sportsman, and a good one. I also discovered, when I was pregnant, that he gambled, drank and was involved with at least two other women. One of them called me to tell me what kind of man I was involved with. I suspect it was to win him back, to persuade me to give him up. I didn’t tell her he had fathered my child. I was sick to my stomach and it wasn’t because of morning sickness.
Once I made the decision, my pregnancy was one of peace, although I was concerned he’d reappear, and he did. But only one time, when my daughter was a few weeks old. I stood strong in the doorway, protective of the tiny baby that needed me to shield her from any kind of danger, and refused to let him into my apartment, her life. He left, suitably cowed, and did not return. A few years later, I changed my surname, and that of my daughter’s. We moved house a number of times. Facebook tells me that some thirty years later, he is still dark and handsome, fit and lean. He changes women every few years.
I built a life for my daughter and I, or so I believed. I went back to university to study teaching so I could work a job with child friendly hours. I bought an apartment so she would always have a home. I rarely dated because I was careful about the men I associated with, not for me, but for her. I was tough but fair with my discipline, mindful that I wanted to raise an independent woman who knew that she always had a choice, but that choices always had consequences.
Her twenty-first birthday was not supposed to be celebrated with a party. I had given her a passport and plane tickets to Thailand, and that was instead of and better than. But she wanted to be made a fuss of, so a party was also had, mostly at her expense, with me making a contribution. That party was the first time my daughter swore at me, embarrassed that I would even contemplate partying on with her friends once the venue had closed and things were winding up at the end of the evening. You’re not fucking going with us, she said. Just go fucking home. What could I do?
The weeks following her birthday celebration were awful, but this was not an isolated incident. I was shocked by her words and actions at that time and in that place, but here had been a slow build-up over her teenage years. Like an erupting volcano, she vomited the lava of contempt, the ash of loathing all over me once she was twenty-one. It was as if once she came of age, she gave herself permission to erupt, to damage, to maim.
I went to Vietnam when my daughter was twenty-three. She was working, in a stable relationship, and an adult by all accounts. Responsible. She had many friends, a vibrant social life. I went because at fifty-three, I had an urgent need to challenge myself, so I quit my job for a gap year. A midlife crisis, according to my daughter. That year turned into four of the best of times, worst of times years. My relationship with my daughter was still strained, but it had been even before her she ordered me to just go fucking home. The geographical distance between us was a relief.
When my mother died, I received a small inheritance. I was surprised, because I didn’t know I was in her will. I hadn’t talked to her for years. I called my inheritance compensation, and I’m grateful for it. It has given me the gift of freedom to choose. My daughter, always good with money, decided that it was time to stretch out her hand. I gave her a small amount to help with the house she was building. Then she came back for more. For her wedding reception. I said no. She didn’t speak to me for months. I was hurt but grateful for the eerie peace. A relationship with my lover had ended abruptly, and I needed to heal.
She called me, which was unusual. I would go months without hearing from her, especially after I had said no to her very kind offer of me giving her more money. Her boyfriend was by her side as she wept. She was pregnant with twins, it was ectopic and the pregnancy needed to be terminated. I asked if she wanted me to come back to Australia. I could get on the next plane. No, was the reply. Her boyfriend and his parents would make look after her and there was nothing I could do, really, so I should just stay there. I called every day, twice per day for a week, making sure she was ok. She was. We slipped back into our comfortable routine of sporadic contact, punctuated by news of her engagement and my return to Australia.
She asked me to give her away at her wedding. This came after three months of silence, broken by this conciliatory offer that must have been difficult for her. She thought only in terms of how things looked, what people would say, and she had always said that her fiancée’s father would give her away. Why, I had asked, when he didn’t birth you or raise you? He’s only come in at the tail end, I’d said. She is now supervising my attire for the day, suggesting suitable styles, texting me pictures of navy or green wrap dresses, long and flowing in soft material. Fortunately, we agree.
I have been back in Australia for three months, homeless while I wait for my tenants to vacate my apartment. I’m staying at my sister’s house in the country. I have no transport. There are no cafes. I have seen my daughter once during that time, and only because my sister and I went to the city, and we arranged to meet for dinner. Two hours all up. My daughter said she couldn’t possibly see me when I return because she’s so, so busy with her house. And the wedding. And work. And Christmas.
What it is clear to me now is that my daughter views me as peripheral to her life. When she was younger, I performed a utilitarian function of shelter, money, food, transport. Now, I am an annoyance, an annotation, an alien being to be tolerated, barely. She is twenty-eight, so this is unlikely to change. I often wonder why this particular dance became the way we operated as a family. I can’t put my finger on when or how. All I know is that this is not how I imagined motherhood at all. It’s this withered tree-like thing, so loaded with disappointment that the bough is bent, almost broken. I can’t seem to get it right, no matter how I try.

Thankfully, a kind passerby took pity on the puppy
A three-month-old Rottweiler puppy who was found wandering alone through Hyde Park, London, has got his Christmas wish: a forever home in time for Christmas. Oliver the Rottweiler puppy certainly didn’t have the most auspicious start to life. Found wandering alone through Hyde Park, the little guy had been abandoned by his previous owner. Thankfully, a kind passerby took pity on the pup and took him to Battersea Cats and Dogs Home where centre workers discovered he was completely blind.
A mystery pup With no chip and no way of knowing where he came from, it’s difficult to say exactly why he was abandoned but it does seem possible that it was by breeders who thought he’d be difficult to sell because of his blindness.
But, at this time of year, we all want to hear good news and there finally is some for little Oliver, he’s found his forever home just in time for Christmas.
Oliver Twist And it seems that the pup’s personality is really coming through now he knows he’s safe.
Despite his sight loss, he’s managed to acclimatise himself to his new home and likes to take his food bowl to his owner when he’s hungry – earning himself the nickname Oliver Twist!
We wish little Oliver all the very best and hope he has the happiest of Christmas – he deserves it!

Biden Names Health Secretary, COVID Czar, Other Key Members To Health Team:,
President-elect Joe Biden on Monday announced the team he would like to lead his response to the nation's greatest public health crisis in a century once he takes office in January.
Biden said in a statement that he will nominate Xavier Becerra to lead the sprawling Health and Human Services Department. Becerra is California's attorney general and has led prominent legal fights against President Trump's efforts to dismantle the Affordable Care Act. Becerra would be the first Latino to lead HHS, the Biden transition team said in a statement.
Biden said he would nominate Dr. Rochelle Walensky as the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Walensky is chief of infectious diseases at Massachusetts General Hospital and a Harvard Medical School professor.
Biden selected Jeff Zients to be the White House coordinator of the coronavirus response, a point person for efforts by agencies and state and local governments on vaccine distribution and supply chain issues. Zients, a veteran of the Obama administration with extensive business ties, is known for having spearheaded the work to fix the healthcare.gov website used to sign up for Obamacare after its disastrous rollout in 2013.

Biden also said he would nominate Dr. Vivek Murthy as surgeon general. Murthy has been a key coronavirus adviser to Biden, regularly briefing him on the pandemic during his campaign and the transition. Murthy was surgeon general during the Obama administration.
Murthy faced pushback when Obama nominated him for the job after the National Rifle Association raised alarms about his support for an assault weapons ban. In his confirmation hearing, when asked about this, Murthy insisted he intended to use his platform as surgeon general not to push for gun control but to draw attention to obesity prevention.

On Thursday, Biden announced that Dr. Anthony Fauci would continue his role as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases while also serving as his chief medical adviser on COVID-19.

If Boris Johnson is to unsettle Starmer, he must first rally his own squabbling ranks
“It’s time we address the structural inequalities in our economy that the pandemic has laid bare,” President-elect Joe Biden said this week, as he introduced his economic team.
Beware going 'back to normal' thoughts – normal gave us Trump Robert Reich Robert Reich Read more It’s a good team. They’re competent and they care, in sharp contrast to Trump’s goon squad. Many of them were in the trenches with Biden and Barack Obama in 2009, when the economy last needed rescuing.
But reversing “structural inequalities” is a fundamentally different challenge from reversing economic downturns. They may overlap – last week the Dow Jones Industrial Average hit a record high at the same time Americans experienced the highest rate of hunger in 22 years. Yet the problem of widening inequality is distinct from the problem of recession.

Recessions are caused by sudden drops in demand for goods and services, as occurred in February and March when the pandemic began. Pulling out of a recession usually requires low interest rates and enough government spending to jump-start private spending. This one will also necessitate the successful inoculation of millions against Covid-19.
By contrast, structural inequalities are caused by a lopsided allocation of power. Wealth and power are inseparable – wealth flows from power and power from wealth. That means reversing structural inequalities requires altering the distribution of power.
Franklin D Roosevelt did this in the 1930s, when he enacted legislation requiring employers to bargain with unionized employees. Lyndon Johnson did it in the 1960s with the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts, which increased the political power of Black people.
Since then, though, not even Democratic presidents have tried to alter the distribution of power in America. They and their economic teams have focused instead on jobs and growth. In consequence, inequality has continued to widen – during both recessions and expansions.
For the last 40 years, hourly wages have stagnated and almost all economic gains have gone to the top. The stock market’s meteoric rise has benefited the wealthy at the expense of wage earners. The richest 1% of US households now own 50% of the value of stocks held by Americans. The richest 10%, 92%.
Why have recent Democratic presidents been reluctant to take on structural inequality?
First, because they have taken office during deep recessions, which posed a more immediate challenge. The initial task facing Biden will be to restore jobs, requiring that his administration contain Covid-19 and get a major stimulus bill through Congress. Biden has said any stimulus bill passed in the lame-duck session will be “just the start”.
Second, it’s because politicians’ time horizons rarely extend beyond the next election. Reallocating power can take years. Union membership didn’t expand significantly until more than a decade after FDR’s Wagner Act. Black voters didn’t emerge as a major force in American politics until a half-century after LBJ’s landmark legislation.
Third, reallocating power is hugely difficult. Economic expansions can be a positive-sum game because growth enables those at the bottom to do somewhat better even if those at the top do far better. But power is a zero-sum game. The more of it held by those at the top, the less held by others. And those at the top won’t relinquish it without a fight. Both FDR and LBJ won at significant political cost.
Today’s corporate leaders are happy to support stimulus bills, not because they give a fig about unemployment but because more jobs mean higher profits.
“Is it $2.2tn, $1.5tn?” JP Morgan chief executive Jamie Dimon said recently in support of congressional action. “Just split the baby and move on.”
But Dimon and his ilk will doubtless continue to fight any encroachments on their power and wealth. They will battle antitrust enforcement against their giant corporations, including Dimon’s “too big to fail” bank. They’re dead set against stronger unions and will resist attempts to put workers on their boards. They will oppose substantial tax hikes to finance trillions of dollars of spending on education, infrastructure and a Green New Deal. And they don’t want campaign finance reforms or any other measures that would dampen the influence of big money in politics.
Even if the Senate flips to the Democrats on 5 January, therefore, these three impediments may discourage Biden from tackling structural inequality.
This doesn’t make the objective any less important or even less feasible. It means only that, as a practical matter, the responsibility for summoning the political will to reverse inequality will fall to lower-income Americans of whatever race, progressives and their political allies. They will need to organize, mobilize and put sufficient pressure on Biden and other elected leaders to act. As it was in the time of FDR and LBJ, power is redistributed only when those without it demand it.

Millions of readers around the world are flocking to the Guardian in search of honest, authoritative, fact-based reporting that can help them understand the biggest challenge we have faced in our lifetime. But at this crucial moment, news organisations are facing a cruel financial double blow: with fewer people able to leave their homes, and fewer news vendors in operation, we’re seeing a reduction in newspaper sales across the UK. Advertising revenue continues to fall steeply meanwhile as businesses feel the pinch. We need you to help fill the gap.
We believe every one of us deserves equal access to vital public service journalism. So, unlike many others, we made a different choice: to keep Guardian journalism open for all, regardless of where they live or what they can afford to pay. This would not be possible without financial contributions from those who can afford to pay, who now support our work from 180 countries around the world.
Reader financial support has meant we can keep investigating, disentangling and interrogating. It has protected our independence, which has never been so critical. We are so grateful.
We need your support so we can keep delivering quality journalism that’s open and independent. And that is here for the long term. Every reader contribution, however big or small, is so valuable. Very nearly, it seems. A deal is there for the taking. And, however scrawny it may be, any deal is very different to no deal in economic, political and diplomatic terms. Yet the fact remains that our choice is between something skinny and nothing at all. Which, if nothing else, raises the question: how the hell did we arrive here?
For some, the answer is simple: Tory Brexiters. European Research Group ultras dragged Theresa May kicking and screaming into backing the kind of Brexit only they wanted. When she failed to deliver it, she was summarily defenestrated by her loyal colleagues. Steve Baker and co have provided us with the Brexit version of the devil’s alternative: no deal unless it conforms with their version of Brexit ideological purity. But Brexit ideological purity has always been a minority interest. In the parliaments that gave us the referendum and then tried to work out what it meant, only some 80 MPs backed the kind of outcome we are now confronted with.
Advertisement What is more, public opinion never came out in favour of this kind of Brexit. Yes, they voted to leave and the official Vote Leave campaign spoke of taking back control. But that is a tenuous mandate at best. That campaign, after all, quite deliberately avoided telling the public what leaving would look like. Subsequent polling and deliberative inquiries, moreover, have shown that, offered a choice, a majority of the public favours something far “softer” than what is now on offer.
Thinking back to the period immediately after the referendum, few people could have imagined where the tortuous subsequent journey would end. May set out red lines at the party conference and in her “plan for Britain” speech at Lancaster House that some see as setting the destination unequivocally towards hard Brexit, but she wanted a “bespoke” arrangement between the UK and the EU. Between 2016 and 2018, May went on something of a journey. From Lancaster House to Chequers, her approach to Brexit softened significantly, albeit that the end product was still a Brexit that eschewed the customs union and the single market. By Chequers, she was proposing that the UK remain part of the single market for goods through a “common rulebook” and her customs backstop meant that the starting point for the future relationship would be an enduring customs relationship until technology came to the rescue, the reason her backbenchers would not pass her deal.
Those suggesting some kind of compromise were shouted – and voted – down as the debate polarised Moreover, en route, she called, and effectively lost, an election. To claim that the outcome of Brexit was set in stone by May in either October 2016 (Tory conference) or January 2017 (Lancaster House) is to forget just how powerless she frequently was after that electoral debacle.
It’s here that things get really interesting. Not least because it’s at this point that the dynamics of Brexit absolutism took over. Just at the moment when the prime minister was too weak to force her version of Brexit on parliament or the country, those suggesting some kind of compromise were shouted – and voted – down as the debate polarised. As the People’s Vote campaign got under way, so the Brexiters become increasingly obsessed with Brexit purity. Rather than train their fire on each other, both camps focused their ire on the “compromisers” in the middle. As the temperature was raised, so it became more difficult for those seeking a compromise to argue – let alone vote – in favour of one. As Peter Mandelson has pointed out, it’s possible to have argued in favour of a referendum and thereby weakened the case for a softer form of Brexit and not regret it. But his acceptance of the link between the two is instructive.
Clearly, the state of our politics did not help. Plenty of Conservatives would have considered working closely with the parliamentary Labour party had their leader not been Jeremy Corbyn. Equally, plenty of Labour MPs who backed Brexit but wanted a deal could have backed the May deal but were concerned about the optics of backing a Conservative prime minister who otherwise might have fallen. This latter logic in particular, however, feels faulty. Yes, there was pressure from constituency Labour parties. And yes, once it looked as if May could fall, propping her up would have taken some explaining.
But, with May vulnerable, it was clear that her successor’s views would be nearer those of Steve Baker than Dominic Grieve. Consequently, the best way of guaranteeing a softer Brexit was to pass the May deal, with its legally binding backstop, add many of the caveats on offer to the accompanying legislation (including, if a majority could be mustered, another referendum) and keep parliament on life support until the future relationship was settled.

Japan gov't tackling virus surge with "strong sense of crisis": Suga
The Japanese government is tackling the latest surge in coronavirus infections with a "strong sense of crisis," Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said Friday, adding that a rise in the number of severely ill patients has started to put a strain on hospitals.
"Protecting the lives and livelihoods of the people is the top priority of my administration," Suga said at a press conference, as he vowed to have a new stimulus package to deal with the fallout of the virus outbreak approved by his Cabinet next week.

At the news conference held the day before the end of the current extraordinary Diet session, which started on Oct. 26, Suga asked the public to continue taking basic precautions against the spread of COVID-19 including wearing masks and washing hands, and said shorter hours for restaurants should help curb further outbreaks.
More than 2,400 new cases of infections were reported across the country the same day, while the number of those with severe symptoms surpassed 500 for the first time.
The government plans to decide next week on the new economic package including increased subsidies for medical institutions to help them secure more beds for novel coronavirus patients.
In the same press conference, Suga pledged to raise the amount of subsidies for prefectures, cities and towns which can be used to assist restaurants that shorten operating hours by 1.5 trillion yen ($14 billion).
He also said Japan will set up a 2 trillion yen fund to support the development of green technologies over the next decade as the country seeks to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and spur economic growth.
The prime minister vowed to secure more than 1 trillion yen in expenses related to digitalization including research and development for post-5G wireless communications technologies supporting cellular data networks so that Japan can "take the lead in the world in the next generation technologies."
"What our country needs is a source of growth in the post-corona (era). And green and digital (technologies) will serve as its axes," he said.
He called for developing hydrogen aircraft and vessels as well as low-cost batteries for electric vehicles while promoting carbon recycling, and attracting green investment from around the world.
Opposition parties called for extending the 41-day extraordinary Diet session ending Saturday to Dec. 28, saying they need more time to discuss measures to contain the pandemic as well as allegations that former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's political group illegally covered shortfalls in the cost of dinners for supporters. But the lower house steering committee rejected the request.
The ruling and opposition parties agreed, however, to continue deliberations on antivirus measures even after the end of the session.
Suga was grilled by opposition parties during the current session after the scandal involving Abe's group emerged in late November, as he served as chief Cabinet secretary under Abe for nearly eight years before succeeding him in September and had defended the then leader over the matter during press conferences and parliamentary sessions.
Suga now plans to convene a regular Diet session on Jan. 18 and seek to dissolve the House of Representatives for an election after the budget for fiscal 2021 passes the parliament around late March, government sources said.
During the press conference, Suga did not give a date for the election, saying, "I will think about the time limit and give it thorough consideration."
A general election must be held sometime before the terms of lower house lawmakers expire on Oct. 21 next year.

Saturday’s numbers provide a limited snapshot of the virus in Canada. Provinces like P.E.I. and British Columbia as well as both the Yukon and Northwest Territories do not report new case data over the weekend.
As the number of COVID-19 cases surges, hospitalizations and deaths also continue to grip communities across the country.
