Aichi spoke for hours, and Kai listened. The afternoon shadows lengthened and Aichi, without realizing it, somehow came to rest with his back against the dragon’s side, drowsy with his radiant heat. Kai did not protest, instead falling into a dazed wonder, his chest expanding with a growing warmth toward the boy cuddling against him.

Finally, Aichi’s voice thickened and slowed as his eyelids fluttered closed. “I wish I could have played Vanguard with you,” he said, “I really hope I can one day.”

“Vanguard caused all of this,” Kai growled.

“''S just a game, Kai. And you were just a boy. It was a tragedy. Wasn’t either… of… your… faults…”

Aichi stared at him, mind awhirl. “But finally, after all these years, the people of the castle are starting to wake up. Why?” he asked, brow creased.

Ren grinned and pointed at him, nodding and whirling his fingers as a gesture to continue.

Aichi had read enough fairytales to know how this worked. “Because the structure of the accidental curse was to always get what he deserved… So for some unbeknownst reason, the prince is starting to deserve something… different… something better?”

Ren watched him with the gaze of a proud parent, noticing that the stammer had disappeared.

“So… something has changed. Hmmm…” Aichi’s blue eyes simmered with excitement. He looked fully alive for the first time since he had arrived at the castle. He felt like he was in the middle of a fairy tale himself. Well, I actually am… a cursed kingdom, a magic castle, a fire-breathing dragon who’s really a prince… a really handsome prince, he mentally amended.

“So.” Kai shot Aichi a questioning side glance. “What do you want for your birthday?”

Aichi’s smile faded, and he paced Kai for a few minutes, gathering his courage.

“I wanna be on top,” he whispered, fingers brushing Kai’s.

Kai had been thinking about cakes: orange and red velvet and devil’s food, with cream cheese frosting and fudge ganache, sure that’s what Aichi’s sweet tooth would lead him to ask for. He was startled from his reverie and had to replay Aichi’s words through his brain before a feral smirk settled on his face. “Sure. We can do that again. Last time you cried because it went so deep that way, but if you want…”

With a look of determination, Aichi’s blue eyes went steely gray, and he cut off Kai. “No! I mean… I want to top. I want to… put it in.”

Kai stopped short, reaching for Aichi’s arm to halt him too. He stared at the younger man, wild-eyed. “Put it in WHERE?” he asked incredulously.

Aichi's birthday is fast arriving. While Kai agonizes from France on what to do about it, Gaillard, as always, complicates things.

Aichi gaped. It was the most handsome boy he had ever laid eyes on. He was regal and aloof, glancing at the viewer side-eyed, a sword in his hands, his emerald green eyes cold and challenging. Aichi’s breath grew short, and he put a hand up to his throat. Ren watched him out of the corner of his eye, still and arrested.

“Those eyes… and that sword…” Aichi said slowly. “I’ve seen them both before. I’ve been sleeping in his room, haven’t I? And… and he’s the dragon, isn’t he? W-what happened?”

“There used to be this card game. Vanguard, ever heard of it?” Kamui asked hopefully. When Aichi shook his head, he looked crestfallen. He pulled the corner of his tunic up, unhooking a clever little lacquered box from his belt and handing it to Aichi.

The older boy opened it, heart speeding up inexplicably as he gently took out the painted cards within...

16. Puss In Boots - an anthropomorphic cat who uses trickery and deceit to gain power, wealth, and the hand in marriage of a princess for his penniless and low-born master.

17. Princess And The Pea - A prince insists on marrying a real princess. When a woman comes to his door maintaining that she is a real princess, the prince's mother tests her by burying a pea under a huge stack of mattresses and then ordering the woman to sleep on the mattresses.

18. Chang’E - Chang'e and her husband Houyi were immortals living in heaven. One day, the ten sons of the Jade Emperor transformed into ten suns, causing the earth to scorch. Having failed to order his sons to stop ruining the earth, the Jade Emperor summoned Houyi for help. Houyi, using his legendary archery skills, shot down nine of the sons, but spared one son to be the sun. The Jade Emperor was obviously not pleased with Houyi's solution to save the earth: nine of his sons were dead. As punishment, the Jade Emperor banished Houyi and Chang'e to live as mere mortals on earth.

“You’re not going after him?” Rekka asked skeptically, “We just took that job tracking down that runaway Katsuragi kid.”

“That job should only take a day or two." Kourin shrugged dismissively. "He’s a 12-year old kid, he can’t have gotten far. I’ll catch up to Aichi on the main road before he gets to the ruins. Even Aichi Sendou can’t get in trouble on the King’s Road this close to the capital.” She snorted, mirthlessly.

“You didn’t even tell him about that big, scary dragon who strafed us, and how that clearing near the castle with the wagons was all burned. Why not?”

“No point. I'll catch him up long before that." Kourin sighed and stretched, wincing as she rubbed at the shoulder of her sword arm. She mused, "He never would’ve believed me, anyway. No one would believe it. No one alive’s ever seen a dragon."

“We did. Though we almost died.” Rekka produced one of her wickedly sharp stilettos, balancing it on the tip of a forefinger.“He’s gonna die,” she said with her usual impish humor.

Kai’s heart returned to its normal pattern… until he saw Ren’s roaming hands disappear in the froth of Aichi’s skirts…

“A-ha!” the Red Queen shouted. “You’re a Vanguard player!” He brandished Aichi’s deck box in the air, and yelled, “Bring the table!” The cheering started up again.

Kai deflated. He had been ready to commit regicide if he could just figure out how…
