What I love about Jack in Torchwood is that he really feels immortal and very old. Like, with other old/immortal characters in other series/movies, you don't get that feeling. They behave like someone of the age they look like. A classic is young vampire who is 200 years old but still hangs out with teenagers. Even if there are adults around, a 50 year old will still be 150 years younger and writers forget what it is to be old. Sometimes they give them the nostalgia of "all my family has died" but that is it.

Jack is joyful and playful, still gets nervous about daily life things like asking someone out (even if he flirts a lot, with almost anyone, including "older" people) but he doesn't talk about certain things (and every time you feel it is because it pains him or because he has spoken about it once and again to many different people just not this time). He knows humanity back and forth. He has been killed several times and still he has hopes and enjoys whatever joys the world can bring him. And to me that is what makes him feel as old as he is. He has accepted he will live forever and whoever he will like will disappear, but he will like them and enjoy their company as long as they want him. He doesn't push too much, doesn't expect too much but is still there, giving chances. What makes him old is not wise sentences or mysterious vibes. What makes him old is the patience and the melancholy in his every movement while still enjoying what life offers.

“Remind me who you are again?” Cain studied his companion (or was it chaperone?) skeptically. Talk about a turn of events. One minute he had the undivided attention of a man he’d basically idolized for years (not that he’d ever use those words out loud) and now…what? He’d been pawned off to the assistant? Acquaintance? What was this guy’s deal? 

He knows Magneto. He’s gotta be important. Maybe…but Cain had done enough research and he paid enough attention that he recognized the familiar faces. This guy was either in so deep he’d been wiped off the books or…or he was new. Cain didn’t especially like new. New was unpredictable and more often than not, dangerous.

“A friend,” Jack supplied nonchalantly. Erik had given him the run-down on this Cain guy, and speaking as an older brother who adored his little brother and then lost him, Jack had a special kind of hatred for the kind of person Cain represented. And maybe that was why Erik had handed Cain over to Jack for safekeeping - there was no danger of Jack suddenly becoming sympathetic to the guy.

“You and me, we’re gonna work some issues out before you get to see the Family.” If they ever got that far, but Jack wanted to be at least a little optimistic here. Someone in the whole damn situation certainly had to.

accessibility in the rpc

once upon a time i made an overly polite post explaining visual disabilities and how inaccessible this community was being, to the point of witnessing ableist responses to valid criticisms of aesthetic trends. for the past several years it seemed like a lot of this behavior died down. however, i am starting to see it crop back up and this time i’m not going to hold your hand if you’re inconsiderate or ableist. i used to let people make me feel like the bad guy for asking roleplayers to do the bare minimum for disabled writers. and i’m not doing that again.

accessibility is more important than how it makes you feel to learn you’re not being accessible.  accessibility is more important than aesthetics. and yes, you should care more about accessibility than if your posts looks pretty.   disabled muns are entitled to accessibility. you are not entitled to being inaccessible. if you are putting aesthetics that are difficult to read and look at above real people who it can literally hurt to try and look at those things, yes that makes you ableist. 

examples of what i’m talking about: over formatting posts with too many spaces and i don’t mean double or triple i am talking about the words being so far apart you could stick your thumb between them.  tiny ass font, font generators that put words upside down. and on that note, people who rely on voice reader apps to read your posts won’t be able to read them if you are pasting a font. they are read as images, not text, and can even make the computer voice glitch. i know this one will make people upset but when you start making icons smaller than 60x60 you are making it very difficult on those with visual impairments especially if your PSD changes the coloring so much we can’t make out what is even in the image. 

at the very least, you need to be talking to your mutuals and ensuring you’re accommodating the people you’re surroundings yourself with. and be open to changing how you format and use graphics even on an individual level. roleplaying is supposed to be about an interaction. which should make you prioritize that interaction being easy for your friends over how your blog looks to you on an aesthetic level. make a welcoming environment towards your peers about these things as well because most of us don’t feel safe to say something due to how horribly we were treated in past years for just barely criticizing the rest of this site for inaccessibility.

IT'S OFFICIAL, I HAVE HANDED IN MY THESIS.

611 pages, including appendices, and something like 200,000 words (the main text itself is around 95k).

Now I sleep for a week BUT THEN. ALLLLLLL THE RETURNS.

as some of you may know, this has been the write-up year for my doctoral thesis. it's been... a hell of a year. BUT! I will be handing in on 20th December so expect me back around Christmas time! for those who are still here, at least <3

it's not the full end of my doctoral journey - after I hand in, my examiners will spend about 2 months reading it and marking it, then I'll have to do my thesis defence/viva, which will only take 2 hours but will be NERVE-WRACKING. then I'll be told if I pass with no corrections (very unlikely), minor corrections (most common), or major corrections (god I hope not). then I'll have a month to do those corrections and resubmit, AND THEN it's all done. so even though my hand-in is in December, the whole process isn't done until about April, BUT AT LEAST I'LL GET A REALLY NICE BREAK IN THERE.

i'm so ready for this research project to be done.

So much has happened since I last posted on here - got a new, specifically made for me job at work (it's only temporary, but it's temporary until the end of March 2022, which is the end of our organisation's financial year, and there was a VERY heavy implication that I'd have a permanent job just like this in the new year), there's been lots of fun events going on at work that I've been able to help programme, AND I'm in the last straits of this "£&%&* PhD! Hand in is scheduled for December, so then I'll be able to have a big long break to get back here for a little while before my defence/viva, AND THEN I'LL BE A DOCTOR.

Anyway, I fully intend on coming back, and thank you to everyone who's reached out to me during my long, long absence, I truly appreciate your friendship <3
