something something fantasy au dottore nd scaramouche rivalry ... scaramouche hates dottore and doesnt trust him , let alone want him anywhere near you . but dottore holds very firm in his opinion that scaramouche holds no power over him because dottore was the one who brought him to life and continues to spend time with you . they're stuck in a constant stalemate though bc deep down neither of them want to hurt your feelings and they both know that if one of them hurts the other , they'd lose your favour

fantasy dottore is the literal definition of ' that guy everyone warned you about ' and to be fair at first it's easy to see why . he's snappy and full of himself and very much interested in the less-than-ethical aspects of magic that have been long since banned from the kingdom . accidentally happening upon his quarters in the castle could've ended horribly if he didn't automatically recognise you as a member of the royal family — but the way he says " your highness " sounds more like a threat than a matter of respect .

however , that's not to say dottore is unreasonable , of course . he would never do anything to genuinely harm you , of course not . after all , he values his place in the castle under the supposed protection of the king and queen and would quite like to hang on to its perks for a little longer . so in order to get you to leave him alone , he's left with no choice but to use his words instead — clearly reiterating that he's a dangerous individual , you really shouldn't be around him . he'd go so far as to detail precisely what he might do if you're not careful around him .

but then he realises something strange is happening , because you keep coming back to see him no matter how many times he tries to get you to leave him alone . when he finally asks why , though , your response leaves him rather baffled .

" because if you were going to hurt me , wouldn't you have done it already ? "

what ... peculiar logic . he doesn't quite understand it , really , as he then tries to explain the flaws in your point .

" i have my own reasons for not doing so . yet . i could change my mind at any moment , you know . "

but you don't seem to be having any of that . no matter what he argued , you simply reiterate your original point : he hasn't tried to hurt you yet , so you have no reason to think he really will . dottore finds your stubbornness both idiotic and strangely interesting .

he finds you so interesting , in fact , that me makes notes of your habits each time you talk . beyond that interaction , he finds himself beginning to expect your companionship from time to time . there's not much to do in the castle — at least , not for you — so seeking him out to chat is a simple way of passing the time . he enjoys it more than he's ever willing to admit , and he wonders , just briefly , if perhaps being around you is making him go soft .

i am always thinking about fantasy au capi . running with monster capitano hcs , he sacrificed his future & any hope he thought he had of a normal life beyond that point just to accept the curse ... all so that he could protect the kingdom in dire times . he always liked to fight but there came a point where it was less out of desire and more out of necessity , it's the only thing he's good at anymore . when he became that monster , he forgot how to be anything else , and in the end he slowly forgot what he was even fighting for in the first place

but then i think that changed for him when reader finally comes into the picture . it's been a long time since anyone treated him kindly outside the realm of reverence and fear . that kind of attention is something he never realised he wanted until then but then he experiences it and all of a sudden he can't get it off of his mind ... unfortunately , there's a long way to go before he can properly articulate his own feelings ( ahem ... no capitano , devoting yourself to them as a tool isn't exactly the right way to express your affection for someone )

FIRST MEETINGS ♡ ♡ arlecchino x gn!reader

synopsis : there's never a quiet day for someone like arlecchino. especially not when she receives word of an assassin from a neighbouring kingdom coming to wreak havoc in her homeland... well, there's plenty she can do about that, isn't there?

notes : 2nd person , small text . warnings for mentions of blood + death ( reader is ' attacked ' by an assassin )

a/n : psssht it isnt super long or anything, but there's a little less to say in regards to how the reader meets all of the harbingers compared to future endeavours ( with the exception of perhaps scaramouche ? ) this wasnt crazy proofread or anything n my brain is a little jumbled so im sorry if it doesnt feel very substanced eheh ...

Arlecchino spun the handle of her dagger around in her fingers, leaning against the wall. The city was near silent as the moon hung high in the sky, and the light of the streetlamps had long since been put out. The only thing left to illuminate her figure was the starlight above her.

"Lyney. Your report," She said, not even bothering to glance in the direction of the darker parts of the alley. She didn't need to in order to know he was already there.

"Father," Lyney stepped forth out of the shadows, raising his eyes to behold the face of the masked woman standing before him. "We've gathered some information you may be interested in."

There was nothing sweeter than the thrill of the kill for a person like Arlecchino. Not because she particularly enjoyed it, but because she knew that everything she did was to protect the sanctity of her home. The safety and peace enjoyed by the kingdom's citizens could only remain if a certain price was paid.

When she opened the door and saw the figure standing over your bed with a dagger, poised and ready to strike, she wasted no time. Striking like a phantom, wrenching the blade out of their hands and pressing it to their throat — she leered over their shoulder, with a glare quite unmatched by any other.

"Begone, foul parasite."

A splatter of blood hit the floor as Arlecchino pulled the blade across the assassin's throat. The threat was eliminated, but she'd have to be quick in disposing of the evidence, before—

"...Hm." It seemed a little late for that, as when she looked up from the corpse she'd dropped to the floor, she saw you. Wide awake, with an expression of abject horror like you'd been watching the entire time.

Arlecchino furrowed her brow, deciding it would be better to leave before the situation escalated and turning to leave the room. You, however, seemed unwilling to let that happen. Arms wrapped shakily around her midsection, you pulled her back without any warning.

Arlecchino had half a mind to shove you away and get out as soon as possible. But when she felt a sudden trembling against her chest and a wetness soaking into her shirt, she suddenly couldn't quite bring herself to do that.

Her hand came to rest in the small of your back, careful to keep her sharp nails away from your delicate skin. Carefully, she set the dagger grasped in her other hand off to the side, not caring to notice if the blood staining its blade would dirty the furniture this time. There were far more pressing matters at hand.

"I'm sorry. Did I frighten you?" She murmured, voice low but far from threatening.

"No, no, you... You saved my life, I'm just..." You trailed off into quiet hiccups, clutching onto the fabric of Arlecchino's cloak. The truth was, you'd been awake long before Arlecchino stepped in to save you, but far too afraid to even move.

Knowing you were seemingly safe now... A sense of both relief and terror washed over you in a heavy wave, and you barely knew how to handle it.

There wasn't much left to be said for Arlecchino; she just rubbed gentle circles into your back with one hand, trying to soothe your shock. Although she was more than willing to do harm to those she had to, she was far from a cruel individual. Seeing such a delicate thing in such distress filled her with a sense of discomfort.

"Don't worry," She said eventually, eyes falling upon the corpse of the would-be assassin strewn across the floor by the window. "I'll clean everything up for you. And I'll make sure this never happens again."

Your head tilted up to look at her, tear-stained cheeks glittering in the moonlight.

"W-Who... Who are you?"

"...Just your guardian angel."

The room fell back into silence after that. You sniffled quietly as Arlecchino set you back to bed, gently tucking the covers around your shoulders and smoothing out the creases of the blanket. After a moment of hesitation, she also leaned down to press a gentle kiss to the crown of your head, smoothing down any stray hairs with a gentle stroke of her hand.

"Sleep now — and don't be afraid. I promise to keep a close eye on you from now on," She whispered softly into your ear, before standing up straight again.

Everything that happened in that room was never spoken of again. Although you could vividly recall your saviour's voice, the appearance of the woman eluded you — and you weren't eager to go speaking of such events to anyone else. Not when you knew what Pierro would have to say about it.

Ah... But who was that mysterious lady?

A NOBLE LORD // pantalone

— the lord of the wealthiest house in all the kingdom, besides that of the royal family itself. many consider him to be the most eligible bachelor out there, and yet, he's shown no interest in any of the women throwing themselves at his feet. he prefers to keep his personal life (and his money) to himself.

A NOBLE LADY // signora

— a mysterious widower with a sharp bite to her words. stories tell that she was once much kinder and more generous, but everything changed following the death of her former husband. rumours circle plenty about her through the kingdom, though they've yet to be proven true.

THE ROYAL BLACKSMITH // sandrone

— the best metalworker in the kingdom. she can forge practically anything, from a simple metal ring to the shells magically powered puppets. there's hardly a moment in the day she isn't working. despite her skill, however, people rarely approach her to commission her services as she's known for her sharp temper and violent anger.

THE MAGICAL PUPPET // scaramouche

— a puppet doll crafted by sandrone and brought to life by dottore's magic. he was commissioned as a companion for (name), to serve them both as a friend and a butler. unfortunately, the dark magic coursing through his body has imprinted on his personality, giving him a rather bitter outlook on life.

THE MAYOR // pulcinella

— the mayor of the kingdom's capital city. he's respected by all, and has held his position for many, many years. even though he holds a high status, he has plenty of knowledge on the inner workings of society in the kingdom, and uses it to his advantage to keep the people in his favour.

THE ASSASSIN // arlecchino

— an assassin hired by the king and queen to eliminate potential threats from other kingdoms. she keeps to herself as a result of her job, and rarely shows her face. a network of her own spies gather important intel and carry out simple jobs for her.

THE ORACLE // columbina

— the royal family's peculiar oracle from a foreign land. nobody knows her place of origin, but it's quite clear she doesn't hail from the kingdom. although many people have a clear distrust in her, she is a sweet woman to those she deems worthy of her respect.

THE DARK MAGE // dottore

— the only mage left in the kingdom capable of using the forbidden dark magic. despite the king and queen themselves being the ones to issue the ban, they kept dottore around so they could utilise his abilities when needed. he stays within a restricted section of the castle and keeps to himself to continue his studies.

CAPTAIN OF THE ROYAL GUARD // capitano

— the strongest warrior in the entire kingdom and a well-respected leader. knights in the royal guard both fear and revere him, with many seeking to one day train directly under his wing. he hardly socialises outside of official business, is rarely seen besides in times of crisis.

THE ROYAL ADVISOR // pierro

— a man who has worked for the royal family for many, many years. he never fears speaking his mind, not even to the king and queen, and that is precisely what has made him so successful as an advisor. some suspect that he, too, hails from lands outside the kingdom, though there seems to be little proof of this.
