i have so many questions!! was rereading the trilogy and I know in the short stories it mentions how there was a purge in Akielos to make sure any supporters of Kastor were gone and there's still an unstable government---but i was thinking isn't it the same with Vere? If not worse because of the regent's influence for many years and I wish we had more insight into how Laurent planned to deal with all that. Will he execute or exile most of the councillors who stood against him with his uncle for so long ? cz i can't imagine letting them stay after all they've done and helped do to him. Guion should be first to the guillotine
Hi!
It's honestly been quite a while for me since I read the books - close to two years I guess? So my answer is probably gonna be vague and I might get some details wrong, I'm sorry about that. But I definitely invite people to chime in in the replies with their own theories. Please be kind 🫶
I have to be honest, I kinda like that Pacat left a lot of things open at the end. It would have probably required a whole other novel to really go into detail of all the inner workings of the political landscape they're left with and how they deal with all that. Which is probably really interesting to a lot of people (the fanfics speak for themselves 🫡) But it doesn't sound super thrilling to me 😬, especially in comparison to the three books we have. I think it would have been too different thematically to fit in with the series.
It also gives the fandom a lot to speculate with and about and come up with their own continuations of the story. I think this aspect might have contributed to the fact that it's been almost 10 years since the last book was released and the fandom is still (sometimes more, sometimes less) active.
You do really bring up an interesting point about Akielos issues being taken care off in a throwaway line in the short stories, while there's not really much to note about how Vere has developed since the end of the last book (at least that I remember, please don't quote me on that, it's been even longer with the short stories). Though even with Akielos, in The Adventures of Charls, with the slave trade. It's obviously not going as smoothly, but somehow smoothly enough that they can indulge in shenanigans? 😭 I'm confused.
I think with Laurent and his rule there's a lot of slow political maneuvering necessary. If he acted too fast and too rash, his rule would probably be perceived as a reign of terror, and it could even bring back his uncle's supporters. Laurent is smart, and he knows he can't alienate everyone, and especially not immediately. He needs to forge allegiances within the court and make people depend on him in his court, and the general public needs to like him and see him as an improvement to his uncle.
And you can also not forget that the majority of the people will probably not look too kindly on his relationship with Damen. There's just so much to consider here and it's such an interesting topic.
What are your theories?

Laurent's real major flaws as a character are not cause of all the shit he does to Damen in book 1 but because he likes doing improv comedy

‘If I were Jokaste and a king maker, I’d have chosen Kastor over you too.’
‘I suppose you are going to enjoy telling me why,’ said Damen. He felt his hands curl into fists, heard the bitterness in his throat.

‘Because a king maker would always choose the weaker man. The weaker the man, the easier he is to control.’

‘What makes you think Kastor is the weaker man? You don’t know him.’

‘But I’m coming to know you,’ said Laurent.

I would love a snippet of your regency au for Valentine’s Day (unless ur too busy then pls ignore <3)
hello friend! how could I say no to such a polite request ??
chapter 12 isn't completely edited yet, so this is all subject to change but here, have a little snippet of our beloveds being absolute freaks in full view of Auguste, Nicaise and the entire ton:
“Damen,” Laurent breathed, his hand falling to grip Damen’s knee before he could think better of it. He needed him to stop talking, to stop asking questions Laurent could not answer, could not think about. He needed him to stop looking at him like that, like he knew everything about him and only wanted to know more. It was fake. It had always been an act. All of it a show for his captive audience. Damen’s leg shifted, the muscle moving under Laurent’s hand, heating spreading over his palm through the pant leg fabric.
For a moment, it felt as though his grip on this reality – the one where Damen was here, a tangible man in front of him, instead of a distant memory on a ship headed south – laid entirely in his fingers pressed on either side of knee-bone.
“Yes, sweetheart?”
Laurent could not think when Damen called him that.
“Behave,” he demanded through gritted teeth.
Damen raised an amused eyebrow, smug smile that did nothing good to the flipping inside Laurent’s stomach stretching slowly over his face. “I am.”
ta da, happy early valentine's day lovely <3
#captive prince#i am frothing at the mouth#these two in this AU specifically make me insane#the fact that Laurent is still convinced damen is acting !!!!!!!!#makes me want to rip my hair out a bit but SWEETHEART 😭😭😭#fic rec
