Conclusion

In conclusion

When rehearsing we figured out some songs quite quickly that we were comfortable playing and knew already so we were able to set up a brief set list with quite a few songs at first. Whilst messing around jamming, we discovered songs that we could all play together and decided to include them in the setlist for now, as the rehearsals went on we either took certain songs off or thought of new ones we could do.

The attendance of the band wasn't up to scratch and so when it came to practicing we had certain members ill or away and couldn't play as a band as normal.

As we were putting together the setlist, some members of the band thought that the song “Black Treacle” that we initially had put down, didn’t sound up to standard and was a little tricky to play so we decided to change it with a different song that we all felt comfortable playing and instead chose “Teenage Kicks” which the band all agreed on. During certain sessions, we would rehearse for the whole 2+ we had in that lesson so it really benefited the band as we got on with more than we would usually had practised which made is easier for us to determine the real setlist in the end that went down from 8 songs to 5 and then the 3 that we thought were the best we recorded in Mwnci studios.

When we went to Mwnci studios, there were things that went smoothly and certain things that needed a bit of work. The mic setup was probably the most smooth and calm procedure, as we had previous knowledge of what mics did what and which ones sounded better in other places and so trying out different mics to see the difference in sound. However we did come across some problems when mic-ing up or remembering which mics were put in what amps or near what instruments so to help with that, we took notes of which mics went into each number and then reported it back to the person in charge of the mixing desk and computer. Testing the microphones to see if the sound was coming through was a long and tiring but important process, it took a while as we would need to change leads or mics but after a while it was worth it as everything was set up and working perfectly. After everything was set up it was time to practise a little before we recorded which all went according to plan, but when we started recording we would mess up a few times which then took a while to record and we were getting tired and exhausted after a few words of encouragement and practising it a few more times we finally had our takes. There was a problem where we couldn’t keep in time or didn’t know when to come in and stop, so we decided to build a mic behind a blanket so the singer could sing and we could hear it in our headphones without it being picked up by the other mics to keep us all in time. We then decided to film the band for the music videos which was pretty cool and we had a lot of fun filming it and playing. Overall it all went well and we managed to do everything that we had hoped to do and more.

Production Project

session 7

During some of the sessions, we had missing members so we had to work around it whilst still progressing without them and getting them to learn their bits and pieces at home and keeping them up to date with what was going on with the band if any changes were made.

We then tried to make it more professional so when we go to record it in the studio and video ourselves to it runs smoothly.

Finally recorded our songs and shoot the music video all at mwnci studios. There was quite a lot of chaos to start off with but then we managed it all and was all coming into place

The next day we started a rough mix of songs with all three of the songs done and dusted and so then we started to discuss music video ideas as the whole class was there so needed their input as well and decided on doing music videos for just two of the songs each. We then started filming for the music vid, two angles, one from above on a balcony watching over the entire band play, then one on a handheld device walking around doing intricate shots of the band throughout. It all went really well and very successful.

We had an array of mics to use, and decided what best fit each instrument: Piano- C414 X 2 at each side  Amp- Orange amp- Royer 121 and Sm57 Kick- D6, D212, Subkick Snare- Shure beta 181| Toms 1+2  Shure beta181 BASS AMP-B 52 AND MD4210  Over heads- coles stereo(back to front|)

Production Project

We had organised to go to Mwnci studios on the 8th/9th, so decided to record our 3 songs there.

Our band, BDDATBM got the chance to record in their studio for the two days we were there

We spent the first day at Mwnci studios setting up equipment, leads, mics etc and started to track the band without vocals to start. By the evening we had all three of our tracks ready to put vocals and what else needed over the top, Once everything was finished studio wise we were then able to chill in the facilities in west wales.

 As we were nearing the end of the rehearsal process and getting ready to get all the songs as close to perfection as we could. We decided to change up the setlist a bit and take some songs away and add new ones that we thought we could learn quickly as a band. Once we got all songs down, we messed around with the instruments to see if we could add any licks or riffs on guitar and bass.

Todays rehearsals didn’t go as smooth as usual, we started practising the song “Black Treacle” again to try and get it this time round but unfortunately we couldn’t get it right somehow and ended up scrapping it as it was taking up too much time and needed to focus on the other 5 songs that we had already almost nailed perfectly. We went over our set list a couple more times again to make it up to a great standard.

Rehearsal Time

In this weeks rehearsal session, we had previously decided on starting to learn ‘Mr. Brightside’ in the lesson before and so with that starting messing about learning it with Carwyn playing the guitar trying to practise it on the spot and then we all just naturally joined in and it sounded amazing and after about 3-4 times rehearsing it we got it stable enough and then we had also decided in the groupchat about the song ‘Black Treacle’. In the photo you can see Carwyn and Joe and sitting on the floor going over the song bit by bit trying to listen to the song whilst quietly jamming to it as the chord sequence, even though the chord were simple, it was quite tricky as we had to get it in time with each other and so therefore listened to the song over and over again until eventually we got it correct, in the next lesson we need to get it up to the best standard as possible.

There’s been a lot of change to the set list with taking away a good handle full of songs and we’ve added more songs that are definite and we already have practised multiple times and know fit well with all the instruments and we are all comfortable with playing perfectly

As we got more comfortable playing together we knew what we liked and could comfortably play together therefore it was a lot easier to pick songs that we knew would fit the setlist.

Throughout this whole process we had to cut some songs including Black Sabbath- “War pigs”, “Sweet Child O Mine” and Never Gonna Give You Up as they were either a little bit challenging to play or we just weren’t feeling it as a band.

Initially we had 11 suitable songs that we messed about with and gave them a go but unfortunately we had to cut it down to 3 and add more suitable ones as we either just played snippets of them and it didn’t work or we weren’t feeling them as much as other songs

As I play piano there were certain “Metal” and more-so “Rock” songs that I feared would have been more than a challenge for me to play with it being so quiet I don’t think it would do it justice.

Rehearsals 1st Session

During the first day of rehearsals we picked some ideas of songs that were of each others taste or genres and sampled them to see if they were manageable to learn or not and then could potentially learn on the spot, and with messing about a couple of times we could then put together a set list of definite songs. We had a chat of what sort of songs we wanted, for example we wanted to have at least a Beatles song in the setlist as they’re so well known and we  all knew some songs on the spot already which was easier for all of us at the start. Rehearsals went well for the first day, not much was done as it was just a starting point but we gradually got where we wanted for the next session so we knew where to start off next time.
