Advice for Fanfiction Writers

Note, these are my personal opinions but I thought they might help some people.

1) Always write for you. Not for likes or reviews/comments or favorites, write because it’s what you want to do.

2) Take a few minutes to proof read, don’t post right away. Get in the habit of editing.

3) Always leave a coherent summary. Don’t apologize or or talk to the reader in this section, let them know what the story is about. That’s what that space is there for. You don’t need to tell them it’s your first fanfiction, in fact it might color the reader’s impression of your story. Instead give readers a strong summary to keep them hooked. This leads to my next point.

4) Always stay confident. Criticism hurts, but that doesn’t mean you’re bad at writing or untalented. Keep at it, you’ve got this. Confidence shines through your work.

5) Do a little research, readers will appreciate it. I’m not sure I’ll trust a story where characters wears jeans in a medieval setting or use katana in modern London. A little bit of fact checking goes a long way.

6) Don’t hate on pairings you don’t like. This is more of a courtesy than anything, but fanfiction is about imagination and creativity. Hostility only leaves a bad impression of your on potential readers. Keep it to yourself if you can’t be nice.

7) Leave trigger warnings, please. Some readers really need them and views are not worth the emotional suffering of someone else. If you’re uncertain what might be a trigger then go ahead and note it anyway. Better safe than sorry.

8) Be yourself. Write what you want without fear. You can grow writing fanfiction, it isn’t something to be ashamed of. Many famous people did before fanfiction even had a name. Keep going and post your stories. You owe it to yourself.

Hi! I seem to have a huge problem with telling instead of showing because I'm not very good at being descriptive. :( I want to get better, but I'm extremely self-conscious and it took me forever just to contact you. I was wondering if you had any advice or tips on how to improve my descriptive writing?

This question has been answered before, and I ask in the blog description, at the end of newer posts, and in my Rules and Considerations that anyone submitting a question please check the Tag List to find an answer first. It’s even linked in the blog description after I ask people to check it, so mobile users can still reach the page.

You can find the “description” tag linked on the tag list page, or by just searching the blog for “description”. There are numerous posts in there about what you’re looking for, including one that directly talks about the “show don’t tell” idea and another that goes into the details of writing better description.

Series: The Perfect Match

A confession letter from Damien to Kai

This is just something short that I wrote. It came to me when Hayden had collapsed, before the next chapter was released, and before we knew what we now know. Now it kind of feels silly for me to have posted it now. But, I just feel like I want to post it.

Dear Kai

How do I tell you the truth without hurting myself. What if you do not feel the same way? Am I dooming this before I even tried? Ugh, I have no idea what is wrong with me, I never am at a loss for words. There are so many things that I want to tell you, so many things that I want to share with you.

But, you will never know. Never know how much it kills me to watch you with him. Every time you hold his hand, I feel it burn on me. When you look at him like that, with so much passion, I feel a piece of my soul die. When you tell me about your sunset dates and moonlit kisses, my heartbeat fades a little bit more. A little more with each touch, each look, each moment - I die a little more inside.

How can you not see what you mean to me? How can you not see how deeply I love you? Dammit, Kai, I’ve fallen in love with you. And you will never know. 

Don’t get me wrong, I have loved before, but nothing like this. Can I then even say that that was love? She knew how I felt about her, I could tell her. There was nothing standing in our way, nothing hindering our feelings. We were just partners and it was easy. But, that flame died as quickly as it was ignited. So, why can I not kill this fire that I have for you?

I wanted to tell you, I want you to know. That is why I tried stopping you from doing the interview at Eros, stop you from going to see them, but you were too determined. Ha, when you’re determined you always get your way. That’s what I’ve always loved about you, you’re braver than you give yourself credit for and so much more intelligent. Your beauty knows no limits.

The only reason I took the interview was to see what it was about. All I could think of during the damn thing was, you. You are my perfect match. 

But, this is where it will end. I cannot tell you, you can never know. I would rather die a little more everyday, watching you love someone else, than to know that I may have caused your heart to ache. I want you to be happy, even if it is not me that makes you happy. Even if I am not the one that you burn with passion for. Being your friend, and always having you in my life is enough for me.

Dammit, who am I kidding? I woke up wanting to kiss you. I always want to feel you by my side, you never will be though. Not completely at least.

But, you will always be my one. My perfect match.

The one that got away. The one that I let slip through my fingers.

All my love, desire and heart.

So my mom recently lost her job. That means that my household now has 0 income. 

We both are on medicines for our mental health that we are unable to pay for. We also are in need of groceries. My best friend paid our power bill so our power would stay on but we need some more help.

If anyone could possibly spare a few dollars my paypal is here.

#ChoicesCreates Special Announcement

Starting today, I’ll be the new master host of #ChoicesCreates, taking over from @holly-park. The next few weeks’ prompts will go as planned, but I need your help from there on out . Message me if you want to co-host, as that will give you an opportunity to plan out prompts with me. I’m excited to take #ChoicesCreates on because I, as a writer, have been given a platform to share my work thanks to the support of #ChoicesCreates. Stay tuned for the next few weeks’ prompts where I co-host along with @misha726author and @sophie-summer. This is gonna be fun, everyone.

What is the #ChoicesCreates Carnival?

#ChoicesCreates is a weekly challenge where a prompt is given to the fandom, and you have free reign to create what you want based on the prompt – a short story, illustrations, a comic strip, videos, a poem, etc. The creative choice is yours.

I started this because there’s so much creativity in the Choices fandom – from fan fic to artwork. There’s also a lot of *potential* creativity. There are comments from those who want to start writing/drawing/creating but don’t know how to start. Some are mustering up the confidence to share their work.

So with that, I thought about putting a weekly creativity carnival together inspired by our favorite game.

What is a prompt and what are examples of prompts?

A prompt is a thoughtstarter for your work. It can be the topic the work is based on, or mandatory part of the work (see last example). :

“Your favorite ship is stuck in the rain during a hike, forcing them to play a game of “Never Have I Ever” that gives way to some surprising revelations about each other.“ “An Endless Summer character’s favorite childhood memory.” Incorporate this line in your artwork/writing: “It was snowing when she left me.”

Who chooses and announces the prompts?

I will choose and announce the prompts in collaboration with the Carnival Host (see more details below), but everyone is welcome to submit a prompt via my Ask box. Please specify that it’s for the #ChoicesCreates carnival.

Where do I publish my work?

On your own blog, with the tag #ChoicesCreates.

How long do I have to create my work?

Around a week. The prompt goes up every Monday 7pm Chicago Time (Central Time). You can publish your work anytime between then till the deadline of Sunday, 7 PM Chicago Time (Central Time). The Carnival Host will then track the entries. Why track? See next question.

Why is it called a Carnival?

When the Carnival Host has collected all the entries, they will publish a list of ALL that week’s carnival submissions in one entry on their blog. This way, we see all the creative work inspired by that single prompt. 😊 The list should be published by Monday, 7 PM Chicago time (Central Time), also when the new prompt and next Carnival Host will be announced.

Think of the #ChoicesCreates Carnival as going from one ride to another, one booth to another. You’ll have different creative experiences even if the theme for that week is the same. Awesome, right?

How do I make sure I’m part of the Carnival round-up?

1. Tag your work with #ChoicesCreates.

2. Tag me ( @dopecatcollins ) and the co-host.

3. Message me specifically for your work. 

Can the Carnival Host change?

Yes! I’ll manage the first rounds but will definitely have others host it. If you’d like to host a carnival, let me know. I do request that the Carnival Hosts be diligent with the tracking and the publishing of the final list. 😉

Why should I host?

It’s a great way to take care of and celebrate the creativity within the community! Plus, if you’d like more folks to connect with you, hosting is a great way to do it since you’ll have that week’s master list of entries on your own blog.

Any rules with what we publish for the carnival?

While the creative freedom is yours, there are 5 guidelines: 1. On content: If you are submitting fanfic, label it accordingly (T, M, MA). For any triggers, please indicate this as well. No situations on abuse/violence is allowed whatsoever. NSFW entries MUST be tagged. There are minors reading our work and we must have this safeguard.   2. All submissions should be your original creative work. 3. This is only for tumblr blogs. 4. All stories should be Choices-related, e.g. you can’t take a prompt and submit work about another game/book.   5. Tag work with #ChoicesCreates so your submission for the week can be tracked.

More guidelines may be added as we move forward with our fandom activity.

Can I submit more than one creative work per weekly carnival?

Yes you can.

Can I collaborate with others for a submission?

Definitely! I highly encourage this.

I would love to join the Choices Carnival but I’m a bit nervous of publicly posting my work. Is there any other way I could join?

Part of the process of the carnival is to encourage the Creative in you to be confident about sharing your work. ✨ All work is public and during the round-up, your submission will be linked back to your blog. If you’re uncomfortable sharing your work publicly, don’t worry – take your time. When you’re ready to participate, just jump in. 😊
