A song in the silence
By Captionwayn
I had just put on one of my records ‘we’ll meet again’ and sat in my chair when a knock at the door disturbed my mind. There stood a man who greeted me “Dr. Daniel Evins, you’re invited to attend a party” he shoved a letter in my hand and quickly made himself unknown. I shut the door with a puzzled look as I read the contents of the letter. It read, “Dr. Evins, you don’t know me but I know you and I humbly invite you to my home to attend my party” it simple had the initials V.R. I was puzzled not only at the invitation but the letters, they were as red as blood. I noticed the return address was a days ride away. I was quite skeptical but I felt entitled almost drawn to go so I packed my things and set off.
I arrived at dusk the next morning. A guard awaited me at the door of a mansion of a home that jutted into the sky stating its beauty. The guard let me in with a brisk but light shove before shutting the door. “Welcome Dr. Evins” said a tall and skinny man, “My name Is Victor, the owner of this home.” I shook his hand, it was like ice and his nails were quite long. Soon we were sitting at a table big enough to house a family plus more. “I have invited you to a party I’m hoping you can help me” he grinned at me with sharp eyes, his teeth nearly as much. I regarded him with weary he had sharp cheek bones and dark brown almost black eyes. “Do you enjoy music?” He stood with the swiftness of cat putting on a song I knew well and he began to sing, “We’ll meet again, don’t know where don’t know when but I know we’ll meet again some sunny day” the words oozed out of him with such vigor that I almost joined in but I deemed it unnecessary. “It’s late and you must be tired so I must have you resign to your quarters” with that I was ushered to my room. It felt comfortable familiar, too familiar it felt like home, home was not where I am. I heard footsteps out my door, I went to check only to find the door locked. I retired back to my bed with a sense of dread, I felt eyes on me and they looked at me with hunger and sick desire.
The morning clawed it’s way through my window. On my way down to the dining hall I hesitated in an open doorway looking at a man sitting in an armchair staring at a fire. I was about to step through the threshold when Victor quickly shut the door. “That is one of the guest, he’s asleep so do not disturb him” his cold voice matched his attire, a giant coat that match his sleek figure. He led or should I say dragged me to the dinning hall and pushed me into a chair, he poured a glass I assumed it to be wine but it had a coppery taste. I hated it and almost spit it out but couldn’t. I tried to stand but I had been shackled to the table. My vision grew dark.
“We’ll meet again, don’t know where don’t know when” his voiced rang in my ears like a bell. As my vision returned I saw I was strapped to an armchair. My restraints were metal cuffs screwed into my wrist. I could feel my bones as they locked up. I screamed in agony, footsteps on cobble stopped me, he drew near whistling that song… that fucking song. As he came into view he pushed a cart of medical tools in with him. “Glad to see you awake, shall we begin your surgery?” I tried to cry, to scream, to beg but the stitches that bonded my lips shut. I writhed in the chair with every will and strength I had, but it was no use. The screws hurt tenfold as I did. He grab a bone saw and brought it to my fingers, I shook my head with vigor and fear, it was no use he sawed every last one of my fingers off my hand. He eventually stopped but I could not tell the pain… the pain… the pain had made me numb. When he left I pulled and pulled at the restraints feeling the bones in my wrist snap, but I did not care. By some miracle the restraint broke and I freed my fingerless hand. I wondered in that dungeon for an hour stumbling on things that would make god weep. One stuck out to me, a man hung and strangled from his own intestines. I eventually fell to my knees when Victor found me, he took one look at me and smashed me across the face with a hammer, everything went dark.
I awoke in a chair in front of a fireplace, I heard footsteps behind me but I was too weak to turn. A I heard a door shut and he spoke to someone, “That is one of the guest, he’s asleep so do not disturb him.” I was in and out of consciousness that. When I finally awoke I stumbled to the window and saw a running to the woods, he stopped and looked up at me with familiar eyes before disappearing into the abyss of the woods. When I tried the door it was unlocked and I stumbled downstairs and I heard it again that song… that fucking song is all I hear. When I walked passed a door someone tried to open it but they seemed locked inside I kept on, they were just as dead as I was if I stayed. I found the stairwell leading down but I slipped and fell.
Awaking noticed two things, the morning sun and the bond permeating from my leg. I stood up in agonizing pain and screamed, it ripped open the stitches on my lips. As blood flowed down my shirt I stumble out the door and to the woods. I turned and looked up at a window to see someone looking down at me with such familiar eyes, I turned and fought my way forward.
I came to a clearing and what I saw caused my heart to stop. I fell to my knees, every where was a body either on the ground or on their knees. They all looked at me with such familiar eyes, with my eyes. They had my eyes my mouth my nose, THEY WERE MINE. Then I heard it… the song, “We’ll meet again, don’t know where don’t know when, but I know we’ll meet again some sunny day.” I screamed they all joined me, they even had my voice. I clawed at my ears, anything to stop the noise, anything.
I awoke from my bed with a jolt and a cry of fear. Looking around showed the beautiful sun. I set on a pot of coffee and put on a record when I had just sat down and I heard a knock at my door.
