Grand Final Week Edition
It’s been a hectic but awesome last two months since our first single ‘Insomnia’ dropped into your ears. We grabbed some Triple J support which was amazing and now our EP ‘Butterflies, Diamonds & Lightning’ is finally OUT.
We’ve been touring around all over the place on our ‘Insomnia Tour’ and are currently into the latter stages of the tour. BUT, stay tuned as we are not done with the road just yet. Big things in the works for the end of the year!
While we are talking shows, we ventured back to our homeland over the weekend and played a belter of a show at local venue, Club 54, boasting a nice little line up (The Styles, The 88’s, Jimmi Steele and Hounds of Hiroshima). *Personal highlight was getting to watch tassie rock legends ‘The Styles’ pull on the boots again and tear it in half. Last time I watched these guys, I was 12 years old.
This weekend we get to pull out the bucket list and tick a few things off. Friday night we are supporting New Zealand rock gods ‘SHIHAD' in Melbourne at The Brunswick Workers Club. Saturday we are going to sink a few tins and watch the Grand Final, followed by an epic show supporting ‘HORSELL COMMON’, who have come out of retirement for a one off show at The Bendigo Hotel - Melbourne. Both shows are going to be off the hook so if you can squeeze yourself in, then please do!
Any who, we really have lots to tell you but I’m not going to release a book just yet, so the post ends here. Grab a copy of the new EP or a shirt from our web storewww.captives.com.au - Every purchase feeds one of us for a week, Much love, Matty - Captives

FUN IN THE SUN - QLD
Week 3 of the tour took us to QLD.
We arrive into Brisbane early morning and spend two hours sitting around at the airport drinking coffee waiting for Mitch and Mugga to arrive, then jump a taxi to our accom on the westside of town. The Brisbane Backpackers is where its at.. $8 jug of booze, international travelers, a pool and palm trees. We ate some eggs at the local cafe and decided to tuck into a few cold beverages at the poolside bar to kill time before we head to the first show. About 4-5 hours later we leave the bar and made our way to the venue. Rics Bar in fortitude valley. This place was crazy..the inside of venue is about the size of a generous middle class Australian citizens bathroom, then i went out to the smoking area out the back to discover an area so large you could play 18 rounds of golf. It was so big that when i rang Mitch to tell him i was on the other side of the smoking area Telstra informed me that i was now making an international call. Anyway.. i think you get the picture!
Dead Wolves were up first and fuck me did these dudes rip shit up. These guys came recommended from our other QLD pals in The Mercy Beat and they sure as hell were on fire. I didnt know if we were going to get to play after watching these guys..they had so much energy i thought they were going to burn the pub down before we got our chance.
Dead joe were up next. Hadn't seen these guys in a week. These mad bastards drove all the way from Adelaide to Brisbane in about a day and a half and were starting to look like somebody dragged them off the local tip. The lads had a killer show and were starting to sound like a band with a few shows under their belts and a stench i would imagine smelling if i was present when they opened up Tutan khamuns tomb.
We bust into our set for the night and i must say we are starting to get our shit together also. People were comin in and sticking around and seem to be diggin the new songs.. i guess its all new to the ppl of Brisbane because we have never been there, but we had a bender of a show, made a heap of new mates and celebrated like sailors with the old ones.
Noteable mentions: We got a new Captives back drop made for the band, took it to Rics, left it in its bag and forgot to put it up.
Other noteable mentions: had a few too many spicy rums, packed up our shit and realised a week later that we left the banner at Rics.
Waking up in QLD is one of the worst things in the world when you come from a climate so cold you hardly need a fridge. My head was thumpin, my throat was dry, there were flys buzzin over me waiting to lay maggots in what im sure they thought was some dead corpse.
We had the day off..thank fuck for that. Good friday they called it.. i dunno why. there was nothin good about that day for me. Everything was shut.
Our mates Release the Houds were playing a show with our tour buddys Dead Joe at the 4zzz Carpark.. so we jumped into Dead joes van god help us, and we went over for a looksie. All of a sudden there are swarms of Brisbane punk kids rockin up with arm loads of booze and just smashing on. We forgot to stock up the day before and came empty handed. Feeling that hot weather we needed a bloody drink. So we jumped on google and found out that if you buy food in a cafe that is licensed then you can grab a beer. Good ol' lordy had already found the place before the rest of us got there. We leave the carpark show briefly on our mission for the holy grail and found this little cafe in the mall.. ordered a slice of bannana bread and 15 coronas. So here we are with 15 bottles of beer with no fuckin lids on them, draggin our arses back to a carpark to eat banana bread and watch punk bands.
Within that hour i witnessed a sick band from Melbourne called tigers bash out a rad set, our bros in Release the Hounds deliver a blazing set, i saw a dude totally starkers moshing with his knob out, two topless girls, a guy get arrested and dragged off in a police car, and a dog on the roof of the venue.
After this i can't even remember what happened and frankly i don't think you really wanna know or care.
Tyms Guitars was up next. Record store day. This store is amazing. It was chockers full of people buying records and tshirts and watching bands. The fuckin Hard-Ons played. The staff at the shop were absolutely amazing to us.. on arrival they gave us beers, supplied us with a shit load of sick amps were could use and were very welcoming. I think sending Mugga into a guitar shop with a credit card and loading the poor guy up with xxxx is a recipe for disaster...or a retailers dream :) Woke up with a heap of new bits and bods from record store day, had another great show and left feeling amazed at how rad the brisbane music scene is. We even got invited to be on the door at a KC and the Sunshine band show down the road but opted to stay at TYMS Guitars. It was the best!!
next day we were at the Crowbar punk rocker festival.. i turned up at the door at 5:30pm to discover some guy in one of the bands so wasted he had thrown a pint glass at the bar staff and told eveybody to go fuck 'em selves...
There was a fairly decent crowd starting to roll in and again this place is a sweet venue with a huge sound system and stage. For me this was our best performance of the QLD shows..after three in a row you seem to get into the swing of it. Heaps of really good bands and just had a mad big party with all the bands and friends and reached that point where everybody was tellin everybody how much they loved each other. We had to get the fuck outta here 'cause we had the 6am flight back to Melbourne and it was starting to get late. Went back to the back packers and ordered a jug of cider..mitch grabbed a jug and filled up a glass and went to bed before drinking a mouthful.. i just gave it to some hobo backpacker who thought xmas had come early.
this might seem like a long blog but its very much the short version of what went down in QLD. Thankyou to everybody we met and call friends in QLD. It was an amazing experience for us and we can't wait to get back to your wonderful state.
now we sleep and get ready for canberra, Sydney and Wollongong. Brace yourselves for the next edition of the Adventures of Captives.

Break Out Tour - Round 2 'Buckle ya shoe'
Well! well! well! We meet again. Its time for an update of how things are progressing on the 'Easter Breakout Tour'.
Blog highlights =
Ballsack 8ball tournaments
2 Blown amps
Hot tub gatherings
3 Amazing shows
Limo rides
Have I drawn you in yet?
Hard to know where to start but lets kick it off with Wednesday shall we? We arrived into Launceston and meet up with our touring compatriots deadjoeband who were fresh off completing a tour of the one and only 'Boags Brewery'. A few pints and parmies later and the night kicked into gear with Dead Joe warming up the Irish with a few little numbers. It was then time to hit the stage… I will give a step by step of what then followed. 1. Commence set up 2. Mitch realises his amp has cooked ah - BLOWN UP! 3. Spare amp is retrieved from van only to be also BLOWN UP! 4. Bass forced to plugged into P.A 5. Muggas amp feels left out so decides to …. BLOW UP!
……
…… We really could be here for hours but the gods were in our favour and the show went on to be KILLER!
Friday!! Our Victorian friends swhatband and My Echo jumped on board the touring bandwagon and we headed to Hobart's notorious BRISBANE HOTEL! (love this place) The night was kicked off by SWHAT who are currently my newest favouritest band. They have a beard that plays drums. say no more! Followed by our tassie buddies Hounds of Hiroshima who just keep improving every time we see them and you should totally CHECK THEM OUT! Then came Dead Joe and My Echo who left a trail of destruction and blasted the Brisbane with their musical swagger. I can't not mention that SWHAT challenged us to an 8-ball match on our home turf. We won in a tight tussle but SWHAT tried their mighty hardest to put us off with their 'Ball sack on table to put them off' tactics.
Saturday seen us head to Devonport's Spurs and it was a killer show by ALL! We had a blast. A BIG thanks to all that came out and rocked hard into the early hours with us. Its always good to head home and see all your faces! The night ended with all bands piling into a limo and heading out to the Captives ranch to party on. The My Echo lads took a fancy to the hot tub, Swhat sank XXXX cans and Dead Joe were last seen at 2am that morning.
Tomorrow we take this tour to Brisbane. Until next time! Matty x

Break Out Tour - Round One
We've just completed the first leg of our Break Out Tour - and holy shit, what a weekend!
One of the best things about touring is meeting so many awesome people: people in the crowd who came out to support us, people in other bands we played with, and all the other crazy characters we met along the way.
Anyway, here's a blow-by-blow of how it went:
Friday morning started by hauling arse to the Launceston Airport to catch the early flight to Melbourne. We're starting to get used to the crappy airport coffee, and always getting picked for the "random" bomb and drug test - especially me, it must be the red beard?
Anyway, once we hit Melbourne we got our shit together and went out to where we were staying. It's a friends place, and Aaron's place while he's staying in Melbourne. There is one feature of this house that I should probably mention - there is a cat that lives there that looks like a cross between Gollum and a Ren (from Ren and Stimpy), that we affectionately named "Ballsack". Her owner protests that her real name is "Princess", but we think "Ballsack" is more fitting. Anyway, more about this animal later...
We grabbed a Parma and Pint and headed on down to The Old Bar in Fitzroy.
Here's how the night went:
Swhat were amazing as always, Dead Joe (our tour buddies) killed it and Drifter gave our ears some fuzzed out awesomeness (and lent me their amp! Thanks dudes).
Here's a shot couple of shots from our set taken by Desert Highways (legend!):
The place was pretty full, I think there was over 100 or so in there, which is pretty good for the first night of our tour in such a little bar. The rock music scene is so supportive and everyone is so great - oh, and a huge shout out the the My Echo boys for dropping in and sculling beers with us!
After we partied on and drank the rider (and some) we headed back to sleep on the couch, back with Ballsack. We were terrified that Ballsack was going to sit on our heads while we sleep - because, think about it, what's worse than waking up with a ball sack on your face?
Early the next morning we jumped in Aaron's Commodore and started the drive to Adelaide.
After eight or nine hours on the road, sleeping, eating shit from servos and talking about how Ballsack slept on Matty, we rolled into Adelaide.
Now, I don't know if you've been to Hindley Street in Adelaide, but it's a massive melting pot of.. things. Pubs, supermarkets, strip clubs, churches, etc... things that don't normally go together. It was a busy night too. We checked in to our $30-a-night backpackers and walked down to the Enigma Bar.
The show was amazing - it was Dead Joe's turn to headline (because it was their home town) and they absolutly killed it! Oh, and we were blown away by a band called Release the Hounds. You should defiantly check those guys out - awesome dudes and a great sound. Here's their Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/rthbne
After the gig we hit the town (some harder than others... Mitch) and made our way back to the backpackers. It was daylight savings, so 3am became 2am, and because of the 30min time difference in SA, it confused us even more... but in the morning we made it to the airport on time, had my "random" bomb test and headed home.
It was an amazing way to start the tour, we sold a bunch of merch, met some great friends and played some loud music.
Bring on Round 2 in Tassie!

ITS XMAS DAY
Ho ho ho!!! Well its been a bit since our last blog.. back tracking we did a show at the Tote opening for Hightension. Now since a kid I've always heard about shows at the Tote and its notoriety for being THE place for live music in Australia, so personally it was a milestone to be able to be apart of such an awesome show at the Tote.
We arrived in Melbourne to some shitty back packers hostel, ate some eggs with hollandaise sauce and drank lattes to complete our morning.. then faffed about Melbourne to kill time before sound check, arriving at the Tote some time in the late afternoon.
Walking in the door of the Tote to hear Hightension bashing out some brutal beats on stage, we knew we were set for a big night (as always really). We said our hellos and headed to the bar to leave them in peace for a bit. Cider, Beer, Cider ,Beer ,Cigarette ,Pulled Pork and fries, Cider, Beer etc....
We were first on for the night, opening the stage is somewhat a hard thing to do when its early and people are rolling into the venue but I always like the challenge of capturing the audience who do. We had a killer little set and parted a few haircuts.
The next band were all chicks, a band called AGender. I didn't catch the whole set as was still getting my shit together upstairs but from what I did see they were a tight unit and people were diggin' it. Following these girls was a band from Canberra called Hoodlum Shouts..they had the crowd going, by now everybody had had a skin full anyway but they reminded me of a midnight oil meets the hold steady kinda vibe. Good dudes too who kindly leant us a guitar amp.
Hightension hit the stage and the place was packed back to front and shit got brutal. These guys were fuckin amazing live and also a great bunch of cool cats.. I think Hightension are everybodys new favourite band in Melbourne and I can't wait to see what they go on to do in 2014. Karina's vocals are like waking up to a guy in a ski mask holding a chainsaw to your kneck..it cuts through. Bad ass mother fuckers.
After this I can't remember too much. I remember going to the bar and finding Lindsay Mcdougall from JJJ/Frenzal fame and thinking, hang on, ive seen that guy about. Had a brief chat and probably made a dick of myself.. few more beers..then about a hour later I find myself talking to mr. Dom Allesio from JJJ fame, introduced myself and the man bought me a pint of Fat yak. (What a legend, I never get bought pints of Fat Yak) It was like one big whos who of the Australia music scene orgy at the tote tonight. so good!! Bat piss were even at the bar.. but i'm told they are always at the bar.
I need to start doing these blogs more often cause I get to about here and think shit we have so much more to write..
so skipping all the bullshit about going out on the town all night and bla bla..taxi..plane..bed.
Next up we have Amplified in Hobart. Tassie music industry showcase. We were on at the Brisbane Hotel.. I think every gig we have played in Hobart is at the Bris.. in fact I cant remember ever going to Hobart and not ending up at the Brisbane hotel. They ran two stages tonight and it was really cool cause as soon as one band finished everybody would go into the other room and watch the other bands..made me dizzy after a while. Good mix up of bands.. I saw metal bands, blues, rock, ska- ish bands. Highlights for me were Guthrie (always good these dudes), The Lawless Quartet (Cause I'm a sucker for a horn section in a band..but they were fukin rad) and I wanted to catch the Embers but we were on the other stage straight after but they would of owned it I;m sure :)
We got absolutely torched after the show.. who puts so many bands in one pub on the same night and would expect anything different right? Although it would happen to us if we were on a bill with a Peruvian flute band.
At the beginning of the night I mapped out all my shit cause I knew to well it wasn't going to be pretty later on. I hid my bag in a room up stairs so I wouldn't forget it when we left the pub. We left the bris hotel at last drinks and took us an hour to get across the road..got in a cab and talked smack to the cab driver (As you do).. got out of taxi and walked up to my hotel room, opened the door, FUUUUCKKK.. I left my fucking bag back at the bloody pub again. So I punched the pillow for about five minutes and swore really loudly..once I got my shit together I went down and waved a cab..got back to the bris hotel only to find that the pub was shut, my phone was dead, the charger was in my bag and I was up shit creek again. I had a great idea though.. I went to the back of the venue and started banging on the doors of the upstairs accommodation (took me ages to climb them stairs)..I could here some dude saying 'Is that the guy out of captives' as I drunkenly pounded his hotel window.. lucky he let me in, I found the bag, I got back to the hotel after another taxi ride and passed out in bed watching rage. we had work shops to go to at 10am and I was a fuckin' mess..powerade wasn't cutting it today and sunglasses inside just aint right. Was all good tho..slept it off during the day and went out again that night to mingle with the bands and business people.. played some pool against chris from Big Tree Artists and won 40 bucks.. but I gave it back to him cause he'd had a few and I felt bad.
Anyway.. we did a tour to Adelaide last week.. it was mental.. i'l touch on that run of those in the next blog..its Xmas day here in Australia so I'm going to have a Boags Draught and eat some food. Merry Xmas ya filthy animals -

PUBLIC BAR, REVERENCE HOTEL & AIRPORTS

Hey Fuckers. where were we??? well we have been hittin’ up Melbourne pretty solid since about September and it has been so bloody awesome. Did a show a the Public Bar on a Thursday. We Arrived at the venue in the late arvo with all our bags and shit and basically just hung out in the crab shack drinking cider til about 2AM. For those who don’t know The Public Bar..it has a restaurant to one side of it called katies Crab Shack and they pretty much sell crab everything, it reminds me of bubba Gump Shrimp from Forrest Gump. So yeah ate a crab burger and drank cider. Bands on this bill were awesome. FOAM are a grunge band from W.A, Stone Revival play Rock n Roll and The Quarters were just a machine tight band of totally rad dudes. We had a killer set and then partied. Somebody said ‘Lets go get a cab and head out to The Old Bar in Collingwood’.. it may have even been me. So we left in a cab and made our way to the hotel to drop off our bags and the plan was to proceed to the old bar and get shit faced. We got in the taxi and realised about five minutes later that I left my bag and the merch bag at the Public bar. FUCK. So anyway we went back and got it..stumbled out the door. We had a great cab driver tonight from jamaica whos name was MO. This guy changed my view on cab drivers for at least a few hours and at this hour of the morning and the state we were in I thought Mo was like some kind of GOD sent from above..anyway chatted with MO, he dropped us at the hotel and we tee’d up to go around to his place for a BBQ and said our goodbyes
TEN MINUTES LATER….
'Mo..whats doin' bro? Its Damo, come pick us up..we are ready to go out now and need a lift to the Old Bar'
So Mo picks us up and takes us to the destination. From this point I cant actually remember what happened so we will leave it here.
3AM - 10AM (If anybody in the band is reading this if you can continue to fill these gaps that would be great).
THE NEXT DAY
Feeling the pressures of the night before we disembarked on a trip to Chapel Street to meet our awesome hardworking team to have lunch and talk business and million dollar record deals and work out where to launder all our cash.
We had a pretty quiet day after lunch. Went to a pet shop to look at fish and lizards, ate chocolate frogs, drank a cider, vandalised people with captives stickers while walking down the street trying not to get caught, ate a parmi, drank a cider, ipad tunes, bed.
Next day we went to the Reverence hotel in Footscray. I remember Footscray from the russel crow movie ‘Romper Stomper’.. so I was kinda waiting for a gang of nazi skin heads to jump us the whole night, but it didn’t happen so its all cool.
Joey cape was on in the back room so all these punk kids were at the rev and it felt proper awesome. The first band were called ‘SWHAT’and these dudes were fuckin sick. a two piece band and two of the nicest blokes you would ever meet in a band. ‘Kremlings’ delivered a set that would make your speakers bleed red if they had veins, and of course BATPISS. Fuck I love BATPISS. Check out the video to their new track ‘loose Screws’..its the best thing you will see all year. haha.
After this I went back to the hotel for a bit, got my shit together and marched back to the Public Bar. I must like the public bar because I always end up in this pub now. it may also have something to do with that fact it is open til 7:30am in the morning?
Got back to the hotel at 5:17AM and set my alarm for the airport.. woke up 43minutes later with matt screaming at me, the alarm going ballistic and feeling like i’d just returned from a tour of Vietnam. We had a taxi waiting at the bloody front of the hotel picking us up at 6:10am.. what kind of a sick joke is this? somebody forced us out on the town and poured drinks down our throat and now they are waking us up to go to a fucking airport.
THINGS THAT SHIT ME ABOUT AIRPORTS:
Cues, Taxis, Jet Star and their shitty orange suits, Vending machine that eats your cash and gives you nothing in return, the xray machine, the security guards, the screen for hiding smokers, babys,kids..anything that screams, old people, staff telling you ‘please make your way to the departure gate as the plane will be boarding soon’ when they know its all bullshit and that the plane is late because he pilot is having smoko, trackpants, travel experts, shit headphones, krispy kreme doughnuts, and slow travelling people who waste time (We like to call them ‘Faffs’)
And why do they give you trolleys to carry your luggage on that don’t fit through the fucking doors? unbelievable.
anyways..
We got home, felt terrible but what a killer trip. We came, we conquered and we will do it all again.. you can bet your arse!

Help us make a music video by filming us on your phone!
As part of Amplified, we'd like to try something a bit different and we need your help.
We need as many people as we can to come along to the The Brisbane Hotel on the 29th of November with their phones and film us playing "Zombie Dog" using a free app called "Vyclone".
Then we can get everyones videos and put them together to make an awesome filmclip - and you'll get mentioned in the credits!
The more people that take part the better, so share this around!
What you need to do:
Install Vyclone on your phone
Log in to Vyclone with your Facebook account
On your phone make sure 'location services' are turned on so it knows where you are
Go to the Brisbane Hotel on the 29th of November
Drink a couple of beers
When Captives are about to play "Zombie Dog" grab your phone, open the app and hit RECORD!
Film the band! Get close-ups of each member, wide shots of the whole band, or anything - it's up to you, be creative!
Once the song has finished, stop recording and let the Vyclone app upload your video
Drink a couple more beers
Done!
The Vyclone app is FREE and you can get it from:
iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/vyclone/id521680614
