This week’s #FacultyFriday post is dedicated to IDM industry adjunct professor, Mandy Mandelstein!
On October 30th, 2020, Reach Across the Stars, a free augmented reality app made with Smithsonian and Nasa, was featured as the App of The Day on the Apple App Store!
The app allows you to “Meet Your Female Space & Science Heroes (virtually)”. Mandelstein worked in collaboration with a team of women to create this app; the project received support from the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative, Because of Her Story.

Mark your calendars! The opening reception for The Archive to Come, curated by NYU IDM Industry Professors Clark Buckner and Carla Gannis, is Thursday, October 22nd, 4:00 - 7:00pm [PDT]/ 7:00 - 10:00pm [EDT].
The Archive to Come is an exhibition – both on-line and in the gallery – of short time-based works that address questions of loss, memorialization, crisis, and re-invention, through the lens of contemporary networked culture and digital media. They concern the construction of memory, knowledge, experience, and power. Some questions the Archive considers: How will we memorialize those whose lives have been lost? What could do justice to the fact that so many have died needlessly, as a result of government inaction and political maneuvering, or worse, as victims of racist terror and state violence? How can we redress the unequal distribution of suffering and work to dismantle systems of oppression?
You can find more information about the exhibition and watch it at www.tttelematiccc.com (link in our bio!)

#lucilletrackball: this is the alpha version of lucille, an "AI comedian," inspired by the portraits of the 16th Century mannerist painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo and the American comedy legend Lucille Ball. I perform Lucille by using face tracking technologies and a computer-generated voice -- an experiment in comedy through the perspective of a machine.

“Until the End of the World” connects and amplifies narrative components threaded throughout Gannis’s Selfie Drawings project theselfiedrawings.com/, and is inspired by a sequence in the 1991 Wim Wenders film “Until the End of the World” where a woman is addicted to watching her dreams in a small, handheld device. #video #animation #newmedia #digitalarts

Nice write up on my solo show at #DAMGallery in NeoAvantGarde!! (One thing, if you read it, I'm described as a British artist ...maybe because I'm from Oxford, but that's Oxford, North Carolina, USA, not Oxford, England) 😂 link: http://neoavantgarde.de/dam-gallery-zwischen-historizitat-und-moderne/

UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD | SOLO EXHIBITION FROM CARLA GANNIS at #DAM Gallery, Berline
For her first solo exhibition with DAM Gallery, Gannis provides new hybrid transcriptions of her three-year long project, ”The Selfie Drawings,” including an augmented reality wallpaper installation, a 3D printed sculpture referencing Courbet’s “Origins of the World” and an animated video work “Until the End of the World,” for which the exhibition is eponymously titled. The video connects and amplifies narrative components threaded throughout the selfie project, and is inspired by a sequence in the 1991 Wim Wenders film “Until the End of the World” where a woman is addicted to watching her dreams in a small, handheld device.
Gannis's work does not only gain historicity by her paraphrasing of canonized artists, such as Courbet, but in how she persistently challenges our perceptions of femininity, identity and aesthetics.
