One middle-aged runner's attempt to return to running after a patellar fracture. Plus various other posts, mostly health related, but some just because.

Just a little jab at the state of our world in 2016. I know a lot of good things happened too… but I think this year has also been unfortunate in a lot of ways. Hoping for a better 2017 coming our way! ^^

You don’t have to be positive if it doesn’t help you, but sometimes I find it’s the only thing I can hold on to when things are really low.

Find out what makes you kinder, what opens you up and brings out the most loving, generous, and unafraid version of you―and go after those things as if nothing else matters. Because, actually, nothing does.

It has been a long time since I’ve done a post. Just passed the 2 year anniversary of the kneecap fracture, and I didn’t even realize it on that day. Here are my knees now. I’m still not running, but I have made some significant improvement over the past few months. My left leg continues to be weaker than the right, but my movement patterns are getting much better, so I’m hopeful that the strength will even out eventually. I have significantly less pain in my right knee, which had gotten extremely painful due to compensation.
Improvement has not come easily. I have put in countless hours of physical therapy to get to this point. And, I’ve had to take time to really observe my movement patterns to figure out what I’m doing and how I might make it better. One of the things that has saved me is taking up mountain biking a year ago. It allowed me to get back out on the trails, improve my fitness, build strength, and most importantly relieve stress. I ride about 3 times a week, and swim or do water exercises a couple of days per week. This summer I began strength training twice a week again, on top of the regular PT exercises. And, I stretch every day. Stretching has been the most important element of my physical recovery.
I’ve tried a little running here and there. Nothing long or serious, just a minute or so. It has felt OK, but I’ve decided focus on strengthening my left leg before making any sort of serious attempt at regular running. We’ll see what happens 😄.

Not every day can be turned around. So you just have to let them pass.

Just logged my first 50 mile week on the mountain bike! I'm getting on trails now that I might not have if I was still running, and feeling grateful that I can ride with very little pain.

Three weeks of almost no pain, and even a little jogging (got the go-ahead from medical people). Then, with no warning, crushing pain in the right knee again. Medical people say it happens, and to back off until the pain subsides. So discouraged to be in pain again. Even riding the MTB is uncomfortable this time.
