Tea is the second most popular drink in the world, after water. ⠀ India and West Bengal, are larger producers and exporters of tea in the world but a slump in the tea industry has created an alarming human rights situation in West Bengal, a region economically dependent upon the cultivation of Tea as a cash crop and the closure and abandonment of tea estates mainly in the states of West Bengal⠀ The market is dominated by a handful of multinational companies. Working conditions are often generally poor. ⠀ Being a seasonal laborer means no income when they are ill, pregnant or unfit to work. ⠀ Tea picking is hard work and workers often have to protect themselves from work-related injuries at their own expense.⠀ Malnutrition on tea estates is still a big problem that leads to all kinds of medical problems including in some cases infant death and starvation. Many plantation communities in these countries have inadequate access to basic facilities such as drinking water, sanitation, and electricity.⠀ Discrimination along both gender and ethnic lines is widespread. Women are subject to sexual harassment.⠀ Women workers are asked for sexual favors in exchange for favors by superiors, and refusal can lead to repercussions, such as being allocated too much work or being sent to work in lonely or dangerous plucking zones.⠀ The environmental impacts of the industry are considerable. There is significant biodiversity loss when high biodiversity areas such as forests are converted to tea plantations. Along with habitat conversion, logging for firewood to process tea, in particular, has caused extensive deforestation.⠀ Workers in tea gardens are often isolated from mainstream society. The low rate of literacy and deprived health status among workers always stood as major constraints in giving them access to major health, educational and development initiatives or programs of the state government and other organizations. NGOs such as @pyarionlus develop projects to improve the living conditions of local populations with programs for women and children. The ethnic cleansing of Georgians in South Ossetia and other territories occupied by the Russian armed forces and those of South Ossetia during and after the Russia-Georgia war of 2008, has produced many deaths and thousands of exiles.  Tserovani was one of settlements built by the Georgian government for displaced people in South Ossetia six years ago. Standard houses, no plants or yards. Today is almost a little town with infrastructures. Namibia Flores - Born To Fight - A Female Boxer in Cuba Cuba is waiting for another revolution that will allow women to have a women’s boxing team. Revolution for which for years has fought Namibia Flores whose dream was to participate in the Olympics with the colors of his country. Namibia hopes to be an example also for Cuban authorities to recognize women’s boxing as a sport discipline and, although no longer be able to compete for the limits of his age, he hopes to give contribution as a coach in the future. UTOPIA by Carlo Bevilacqua - PHOTOBOOK TRAILER - CROWDBOOKS - Prelaunch Campaign Support this project! http://cwbks.co/utopia Please sharing. Tnx. In 1516 Sir Thomas More coined the term “Utopia”. But what is Utopia today? A new desire for “somewhere else” necessarily leads to an innovative re-definition of nature and the role of utopia.
Between the 1960s and the 1980s, men and women from different countries got together in several nations in order to build something – a city, a village, a community or simply a way of life – that would enable them to reach (or at least, get as close as possible to) that route of progress and that unreachable destination. In many cases those efforts paid off, at least temporarily. Today, those communities that have survived face brand new challenges under very different premises. [u·to·pi:·a] tell how those communities changed, and how close they got to making the original utopia they were founded on come true.
In an effort to define visually what is the meaning of utopia today, I explored settlements where the residents experience and imagine alternative ways of living. As underlined the american artist Steve Lambert utopia rather than a destination is a direction. At same time I tried to understand how these communities, born decades ago, have evolved and how they managed to survive to the pressure of our dominant culture. So far, my project to capture on camera today’s utopias has taken me on a trip around the world from Italy to India, from France and Wales to Spain, Denmark, Holland and Lithuania, trough Usa until Vancouver island.
I am glad to announce,  that shortly will begin,  in collaboration with Parallelozero Photo Agency, a crowdfunding campaign launched by Crowdbooks, to support the publication of UTOPIA, my latest photographic project introduced and accompanied by the words of Arianna Rinaldo , curator of COTM, Romano Màdera, psychologist, philosopher and professor at the university Milano Bicocca and Marina Mander, writer.
Crowdbooks is a platform for financing, publishing and distribution of books mainly dedicated to contemporary photography. I invite, to those who like it, to register on the project page to be updated on the evolution and on the starting of the campaign
