John Ganis, an American photographer, spent 17 years studying landscapes across the United States. His observations have influenced housing and mining industries in areas like barren mines, cleared forests, and industrial zones.
His photos capture the beauty of nature and human impact, focusing on color and texture. His book "Consuming the American Landscape," published in 2003, showcases this type of work. Recently, he's been photographing the Gulf Coast and other regions threatened by rising seas and storms due to global warming.
I find this style of landscape photography particularly appealing. When capturing nature through photography, it's crucial to pay attention to elements such as color, shape, form, texture, and repetition. These elements contribute to creating visually captivating and engaging images that showcase the beauty of the natural world.

MULTIPLEX is the first hardcover book by Paul Berger. The photos in it are busy, like a collage. It seems like the arrangement of the pictures was done on purpose. The overlapping images give a feeling like looking at abstract art. Berger has helped many new artists while still exploring photography himself.
I like collage art, but Berger's photography was hard to understand. You need context to know what you're seeing. Maybe the artist wanted to make people feel something new. I prefer photos that show clear details and meanings.

Stranger Passing was a captivating project by Joel Sternfeld. Over the course of fifteen years, the artist traveled across America, photographing ordinary people. Through his lens, he captured rich and colorful compositions that depicted not only the individuals but also their surroundings. This project showcased the diversity of people and their ways of life, introducing a new photography style known as the 'Circumstantial Portrait.
One of my favorite pictures from this book is the photograph of an abandoned racing car next to its owner. The vibrant primary color of the car creates a striking contrast with the lush greenery of the surroundings. The style of photography evokes a mixed feeling, blending elements of vintage and modern aesthetics.

I was very intrigued to explore the book 'Rome' by photographer William Klein. This rare two-volume slip-cased edition caught my attention with its modern and stylish typography in red and white, both wrapped in a clear envelope case. The first volume is a collection of black and white photographs highlighting the culture and influential fashion of Rome. The second, slightly smaller hard copy, consists of captions that support the visual images of the first book.
William Klein’s artistic approach helped set the boundaries for street photography. His everyday photos transport the viewer to the stylish streets of Rome, capturing moments characteristic of the city. He constantly used wide-angle lenses to capture larger views of the scene. The black and white photos feature a well-balanced contrast and blur, enhancing the visual impact of his work.
One of my favorite photographs from this book is the 6 4/5 × 13 9/10 in Gelatin silver print title “Simone + Painting + Coffee, Rome, 1960. In this spontaneous moment captured by the artist, a lady walks down a street in Rome while two other individuals walk in opposite directions. One of the males appears captivated by the beauty and fashion of Simone, while the other carries a painting that covers his facial features. This spontaneous composition beautifully complements Rome's unique architecture.

Joel-Peter Witkin was an American photographer born in Brooklyn in 1939. This artist is definitely one of the most controversial photographers of all time. His fascination with death is evident in the majority of his compositions. When he was young, he witnessed an automobile accident in front of his house in which a young girl was decapitated. This traumatic and bloody event likely influenced the way he perceived and photographed life and death simultaneously.
I was also fascinated by Witkin’s interest in highlighting marginalized groups. He was one of the first artists to have the courage to photograph minorities and publish them in his books. These publications served as a window to display and show the world the existence of marginalized groups. Hermaphrodites, dwarfs, amputees, and androgynes often inspired his work as he confronted viewers’ sense of what is considered normal.
One of my favorite photographs that portrays his fascination with death is titled 'Friends United Against AIDS,' taken in 1998. The photograph features a still life composition using different parts of the human body. Joel-Peter Witkin arranged cut-off organs with fruits to create a striking still life. The inclusion of a deceased baby adds a sense of softness and originality that has never been seen before. This type of photography was definitely inspiring to see. Eventually, I want to create photographic compositions that highlight marginalized groups, although I believe I would take a different artistic approach. Personally, I feel that exposing death is very personal and should remain private.

Burk Uzzle is a photographer renowned for his skill in capturing landscape compositions. His book, 'Landscapes,' embraces photography in black and white, adding another layer of depth to his photographs. The use of line and grid organization creates well-balanced compositions. I am fascinated by how he captures common objects in everyday American life. He arranges ordinary objects or captures spontaneous situations with humor and creativity. Some of the photographs are more abstract, while others are more representational. Additionally, I appreciate the contrast between black and white. The intensity of details in black highlights the photographs, while white complements the rest. The photograph on the cover of the book, titled 'New Highway,' sets the tone and mood for the entire book. The lines on the road create a sense of movement, evoking a mystical effect for the viewer.
I was intrigued by how early Burk Uzzle started his career as a photographer. At the age of 14, he was selected as the youngest exclusive photographer for Life magazine. His extensive experience in photography is evident in his work, with a clear example being his book, 'Landscapes.' His beautiful work definitely influences the way we now capture everyday life in social media posts.

THEME PROJECT PROPOSAL
For this project, I plan to highlight the work life of individuals in the Central Valley, particularly immigrants, who are employed in packing houses. Often, we have little insight into what occurs within these private properties. We only experience citrus fields across the valley or see the fruit after it has reached the stores. Kings River Packing is a citrus packing house located between Sanger and Reedley, California, perfectly situated along the edge of the Kings River. The company upholds strong values, prioritizing the quality of its citrus and the welfare of its employees.
Since my early days working in a packing house, I have developed a strong personal bond with those employed in similar settings. It is crucial for me to highlight the hard work of these individuals, who contribute to our economy and distribute quality citrus around the world. These people often endure long hours of underpaid work. Fortunately, I discovered Kings River Packing, where employees are cared for and their well-being is prioritized.
I plan to request a visitor’s pass from one of my sisters, who is currently employed at Kings River Packing. My intention is to explore and photograph the interior of the building, with the goal of capturing valuable moments on the spot. My objective is to showcase the teamwork and hard work of the workers at Kings River Packing and illustrate their significant contribution to the citrus business. I want viewers to fully appreciate immigrant workers and expand their understanding of how these individuals are essential in our communities and for the economy of the United States.
