WIP Wednesday

Thank you to @best--dress and @fiend-for-culture for tagging me today 💙

It's firmly Thursday here, though apparently still Wednesday in the US at time of writing. I've been a bit quiet lately. Cyclones, medical appointments, depression... it's always something. I've mostly been trying to embrace the idea of my brain having a fallow period, but I will occasionally open each of my wips in the hope that it will spark something that gets me to write something, anything, on one of them. Alas. It hasn't happened yet 😔

But then the Carry On Many Cakes Fest became a thing, and I remembered a film with Nicolas Cage wherein he stole some cars. Ok, a LOT of cars. And I thought "but what if SnowBaz?"

(Then I rewatched the film, and it isn't really that good, and even though Angelina Jolie is in it, she's not really there, you know? But I'm gonna put Simon & Baz in it, so it will be much better.)

So far I have nebulous plans to give Lamb a chance to redeem himself as an older mentor, give Braden a chance to be a real proper villain, and Mordelia a chance to make a really dumb mistake that will almost certainly involve her big brother in a heist he doesn't want any part of. Oh and also snogging. Here's some dialogue under the cut - Baz POV.

"Mordelia's in trouble." That shuts him up. He drops his fighting stance and runs his hands through his hair. I try not to watch his movements and fail. "What kind of trouble?" "Have you heard of Braden Bodmer?" "Jesus Fucking Christ Baz! Are you shitting me?" "Sadly not. I take it this might be worse than I initially thought?" He reaches under the bar and comes up with two shot glasses and a bottle of bourbon. "Sit," he orders. I obey, while he pours the shots. He pushes one towards me, downs the other, and then immediately refills it. "Look, we're… well… we were what you might call… ambiguously moralled people, right?" "That's an unexpectedly erudite way of putting it, yes. We were criminals." He points at me in a that's what I mean sort of way. "But we're not bad people. Well, I'm not a bad person…" He trails off while giving me an amused smirk which sets my insides on fire. "Yes yes, I'm an utter bastard." I shoot the bourbon, shudder, and push the empty glass towards him. He dutifully refills it. "Get on with it, Snow." "Bodmer is evil, Baz. I mean he's genuinely a villain. He's got his fingers in almost every underground activity in this town, and he will mercilessly kill anyone who gets in his way, or doesn't fulfil his expectations." "Apart from the murder, he doesn't sound…" "On top of that… he apparently likes to experiment on people. Like some kind of cartoon mad scientist." He drains his second shot. "Except it's not remotely funny." Something about his tone makes my blood run cold. "Experiment? What do you mean?" "He'll involve himself in almost anything that will make him easy and fast money under the table. But that's all just a way to fund his actual business. The front is some hippy health and lifestyle brand. Grass smoothies and purple tea and mushroom pills. That kind of shit. But behind the scenes, he's apparently trying to develop some kind of eternal youth serum, and he's bypassing the usual forms of testing to just inject it straight into unwilling participants." "Jesus Christ." "Well, that's kind of the idea I guess. Except without the dying and coming back to life bit."

I don't know how much of this I will keep, or if I'll ignore as much of the villain's back story as the movie does, but I'm having fun imagining these two as ex-car thieves coming together for one last job. Surely nothing romantic could ever happen while you're boosting cars, right?

What is CO Many Cakes Fest? CO Many Cakes Fest is an event intended to showcase the creativity of the CO fandom—how even with everyone following the same prompt the fics can go in so many unique directions! Each year, there will be a yearly prompt that participants can create for. (why are we talking about cake?)

There will be a yearly prompt that participants can create for (vote for the prompt here). We welcome any fan content (fics, art, memes, moodboards and more!) as long as it’s focused on the yearly prompt.

This fest is intended to help creators remember that even if their idea has been done before, their unique spin on it is valuable and always worth sharing!
