MERCS AND JEALOUSY

scout: scout will almost laugh if you're accusing him of jealousy. him? jealous? yeah, if you had something that he actually wanted, but you're literally nothing to him. and as he says this, you can actually watch his eyes grow cold as he stares at you, lying through his teeth. scout is a man who is always haunted by the potential of jealousy. but he aggressively pushes it off. he doesn't like to focus on it. it's when you get nonchalant scout. scout who... isn't really the best person to hang out with, because he acts like he doesn't like you. or that he doesn't want you around.

soldier: jealousy is something that takes a lot of brainpower to even begin to process. he will actually just groan in annoyance. he understands the feeling of annoyance when you talk to someone and you seem a little too into the conversation. at that point he's actually just going to grab you and physically pull you away. but he doesn't want to talk about why he feels like he doesn't want you to interact with other people. but he does it so simply. just bothers him. so stop that. you don't have to do that anymore. talk to other people. you can talk to him now, he's happy to chat. and he feels like he can't even consider it actual jealousy. because he's fine, as long as you don't seem overly invested yourself.

pyro: pyro absolutely gets jealous. you don't see it, but their face scrunches in literal pain from watching you hang out with people and look like you have a better time. but pyro is just... a jealous person. they don't like people they think are prettier than them. it actually pisses them off. they get annoyed if people are know-it-alls. especially if they don't even try to help pyro understand. because pyro wants to be someone people find interesting. pyro wants people to want to hang out with them. they're very thankful for the team. because nobody really wants to hang out with them, either. except for tavish. sometimes pyro can't even look at him.

demo: tavish is a god amongst men and has never felt an ounce of jealousy or envy in his life. he's generally quite satisfied with himself, and where he's landed in his life. it makes the people around him sick, sometimes. because tavish has never seemed to want or need anything more than he already has. and when the team asks him about it, he laughs. he makes wonderful money doing something that is invigorating. he takes days off when he wants them. he's effectively unable to die. he's made some pretty good friends! his mother is cared for, and he is still one of the best looking men he knows to date. anything else that happens from there is simply a story, and not an actual concern. just don't piss him off.

heavy: misha is plagued by jealousy. misha is ravaged by jealousy. misha wants a lot. not just want. he expects a lot. he expects everything. if he had it his way. but he’s aware that he can’t have everything, which is really what makes misha a sweet guy. because otherwise he might throw up from the amount of jealousy and envy he feels on a day to day basis. so don’t piss him off. misha is just fine as long as you never speak to anyone who may even find remote interest in you, misha is just fine. just don’t give him a reason to have to tighten his leash. he doesn’t do well with people who play coy with his emotions, or toy with his preferences. he can find someone obedient. he doesn’t want to, though…

engineer: dell conagher should be one of the happiest men alive. dell, everyone loves you, man. everyone loves you, women want to be with you, you are one of the best equipped mercenaries to ever exist in the modern day, and yet— and this is actually one of my favorite things about dell— dell is a hypocrite. while tavish has never felt an ounce of jealousy a day in his life, and misha is drowning in the amount of envy he is contending with, dell sits, annoyed at his own nature. annoyed because he has everything. annoyed because he wants even more than what he already has. annoyed because he wants what you have. annoyed because he doesn’t even want that, actually. take it back. dell balances his whims and human nature precariously with a life not meant to be lived frivolously. he isn’t sure how to sacrifice the flaws without throwing the baby out with the bath water. which is why it’s always best to ensure that dell believes he’s better than you. because i can guarantee you, you aren’t prepared to handle his existential crises.

medic: the doctor doesn’t get jealous, he gets possessive. he’s a literal parasite. he uses all of his societal pull to get the best allies to his side. so if you’re anything worth something to the medic, you’re already kept on a tight leash. and he’s so sick about it. explaining it to you like you’re less than a child. like you’re a dog. that you can’t act that way anymore, people’s rapports lay on your shoulders, and you don’t want to embarrass your superiors, do you? and truthfully this is all dependent on whether you are even let out of his sight in the first place. and the moment you react less to his kinder words, the more blunt he’ll get with you. and you’re welcome to argue. do so! he likes when you argue with him.

sniper: sniper doesn’t get jealous, sniper gets paranoid. sniper fears that someone will hurt you. sniper fears someone will kill you. sniper is aware death is a kindness depending on the situation. sniper would never want you in any of these situations or their variants at all. and sniper is aware there is little he could do if someone wanted to do something to you, but he continues to allow you freedom. his bad feelings just bleed into other situations. but it’s because he’s nervous. just give him some time, and some space. he’s really not a jealous man.

spy: spy is not a jealous man, and that’s for the better… if you ask him. if you ask him, it means you miss the way he flusters in private when you talk about others. it’s the way he literally gags if he finds out you have a partner. you miss the way his hands clench as he asks himself why you? why you of all people, why do you piss him off so much, why can’t you just behave yourself? and why does he want you so bad? why doesn’t he want anyone else to have you? you could just be his. he could make you happy. he would actually throw up if you tried to refuse or deny this. it would actually break his heart.

Idk if this is considered controversial to say or not but I genuinely don’t like it when people infantilize Pyro. Or call him some sort of toddler or child.

It rubs me the wrong way.

I say this now as I’m having fun doodling Pyro and it crossed my mind cuz pyro absolutely pulls bitches to me—but I know some people might have a problem with that. I’m not saying you don’t have to see pyro like that, cuz I don’t either, people have their reasons for not seeing a character being sexual and that’s fine. But reducing Pyro to some sort of child who “doesn’t know what sex is” pisses me off ngl.

I can’t tell people what to do, so I won’t. But I gotta give me two cents out there, it just makes me ick.

This was a while back ago but I ended up drawing what Medic’s wife looked like (how I imagine her 🤷‍♂️ someone on Reddit asked me about this and I was curious myself ^^)

Medic enrolled into a medical school so he could finish his studies in America (when he moved to America he had some bumps in the road, and he ended up changing his last name. He doesn’t like to elaborate on why)

While there he met a young fine American woman by the name of Mariam :] she was studying to become a nurse.

They grew really close, Mariam thought Herbert was a bit of a strange man….he was fixated on intricate little details not like other doctors did, but I think that’s where she saw some attraction to him. He was unusual, and she liked that.

Eventually they got older and after getting their certifications, they both started actually working in hospitals—and yes, they did get married.

Mariam and Herbert’s relationship was, nice, they loved each other, but Medic always seemed to hide something from Mariam. Whether that be small—like intentionally not telling her certain things he did—or when he lost his license and just told Mariam the hospital just didn’t need him anymore. Their marriage at first glance was very loving but if you dug a bit deeper, there were obvious problems they had and most of em, if not all of em, was because Herbert failed to try and communicate with her. That and just intentionally not telling her certain things since she “didn’t need to know”. It wasn’t a very healthy mindset

However after getting hired as a mercenary (was informed more privately about it) that meant (since it took place in New Mexico) they had to both pack their bags and leave the more comfortable area they had to fulfill Medic’s future job. Mariam didn’t mind Medic having the job per se, more just the fact he told her out of the blue about it.

She also had to work at a new hospital. Wasn’t her favorite thing in the world but hey, her husband’s happy right?..

I mostly recapped what I said about her in my old other post calling out Medic’s divorce but I added some smaller details for fun. Medic wasn’t the best husband unfortunately, yeah, he did love her, but he kinda treated her more like…an accessory if you will 😕

Putting this here for future reference and motivation and to inform others how I like to write. For the fun of it I guess, cuz I like the way I write :) I’m obviously not some god at it, absolutely no way am I the best. But I’d like to say it’s not bad. At the least, it’s decent.

The way I like writing the BLU team is to make them….complex? Human. Those are genuine people, and people that do exist. And because of that, I’m not trying to make them some archetype. They have a reason.

And I can’t emphasize enough how much I FALL for characters who’s writing is basically just them being absolutely insufferable, but they have a reason to why they act that way. And better yet? It’s NOT excused! I LOVE writers who write characters with the ability to empathize for, but also remind you that what they’re doing is NOT okay. They’re choosing to act like this as a coping mechanism, or it was just taught to them to act the way they do—everyone has a reason to act the way they do.

Like how others say, “abusers are victims of other abusers”. But it obviously does not make it okay. It’s inexcusable. But that’s why I love it. The writer themself’s know that what this character is doing is inexcusable. They have a reason of why they’re doing it, but it’s not an excuse.

That’s basically what I’m trying to do with the BLU mercs. Taking the chance and liberty to write them how I envision them to be. No way are some of the mercs canon in personality, absolutely not, I’m just having fun with it. But while having fun with it I also want to genuinely not boil the BLU mercs down to just an archetype. That’s not how I like to write.

There is a reason to how they act. And it’s not an excuse, they are genuinely insufferable. But you know why they are. And that’s what makes it so fun for me. I love writing characters like that. You wanna kick them in the dirt but hug them because you know they probably need it.

It’s why I love writing BLU Demoman, and BLU heavy, and BLU soldier, and BLU scout, and BLU engineer. They aren’t saints, and that’s the fun of it. And you know why they act the way they do!

BLU engineer may be the kindest of the mercs, but he also has his flaws—which I ALSO love writing!! Engineer may be nice but the fun of it is that he’s just as bad as the others. Not on the same level, but he just isn’t a saint. There’s a reason why he’s nosy, there’s a reason why he’s such a push-over and an enabler. But it isn’t an excuse.

I could rant about it all night. But I’m just gonna leave it at that, I just wanted to talk about it cuz I genuinely enjoy what I do.

Also because, I’m still struggling on how I’m writing BLU sniper and medic and pyro (and also somewhat spy). I know how they act, I know how they react and feel. But I need them to have a reason, a complete story—just a simple one at that. Because I don’t want to make them one-dimensional. I refuse to do that. And if I ever do, please, critique me. Even if this is just for fun, i genuinely want it to be appealing for others as well, AND so it makes sense. And it’s not a mess.

My worst fear? Making a flat archetype. Please, don’t be afraid to critique. I got balls, I can take it.
