Cass & the Mercs

Been wanting to do a little breakdown about Cass & the mercs for a while now. Enjoy. It was fun to finally rattle this out of my dumb rubix cube of a brain.

Nicknames: birdie, canary, little miss sunshine (when he’s being a smart ass) (bogan, derro or great whoppin’ loon if BLU)

Because it’s often up to Sniper to make the drive out to the tarmac & transport cargo back, Cass & Sniper have gotten to know each other well despite Sniper’s original objections to human interaction of any kind. Overall they enjoy each other’s company well enough but for the most part are mutually married to their jobs. This doesn’t stop either of them from occasionally swapping weird survival stories or hanging out & enjoying a good illicit smoke every now & again though. To Sniper, Cass is true blue & about as real as they come & it’s not hard for him to find a great deal of appreciation in her spirited nature even though he’s not terribly fond of her troublesome lifestyle.. or the active bounty on her head…or that she can’t shoot worth a good goddamn or….well a number of things. Despite thinking he’s a bit full of himself & acts a little too straight & narrow for someone who shoots people in the face for a living, Cass absolutely appreciates Sniper’s common sense, decency & value for freedom. He may be a deranged loner but he knows what it’s like to come from little, lives how he pleases & does right by the people that matter so.. who the hell is she to judge.

Nicknames: sparrow, smekalka A rock solid comrade, Heavy often acts as the voice of reason for Cass in the absence of clarity. He may be a man of strength & few words, but in those few words he reminds her & others of their strength. Cass finds a good deal of comfort in Heavy’s protective nature and admiration not only for his perseverance through great hardships in his life but also for his raw, child-like delight in ending human lives.

Nicknames: 🌈mrmpr🌈 Always there whenever Cass needs help burning court documents, evidence or blood stained clothing, Pyro is a true Pybro. Unsure of what twisted mind lies behind that mask, Cass regards Pyro like most other cryptids she’s encountered & embraces them for the curiously unhinged anomaly they are.

Nicknames: Vögelchen Like the enthusiasm of a serial killer getting a severed head on Christmas, Medic is always delighted to see Cass & what black market organs she has managed to secure for him during her deliveries across borders. It isn’t what Cass is paid to do for Mann Co. but she isn’t going to say no to money under the table where she can, especially if it means making the man that can sew another kidney into her happy. 

Nicknames: freakin’ weirdo or ‘c-ASS’ Obnoxious & loud, Scout is the ever present test to the limits of Cass’ patience. Irritated by Scout’s… everything, Cass generally just tries to avoid him lest she be talked at to the point her ears bleed out & die. Scout, on the other hand, finds Cass to be a bit of a busy body & a huge pain in the C-ASS. Scout: “Ha! Get it!? Pain the Cass.. that’s great right?!” Overall, Cass feels like Scout would do best if he learned to find as much value in hard work as he does fighting, reading comics & running that big mouth of his. While part of this is justified, part of it also comes from Cass seeing a younger, more naive part of herself in Scout that she has trouble coming to terms with. She’s no team mom but deep down there’s a very real part of her that cares about the kid & doesn’t want him making the same painful mistakes she did. Scout is in no way perceptive to any shred of this of course & usually just finds Cass to be a fun target for his antagonistic streak instead.

Nicknames: jinx Despite sharing common ground in the weird experiences dept., Demo is largely superstitious of Cass. Having had more than enough encounters with the unnatural, he often insists that her presence is somehow a bad omen to the team & doesn’t hesitate to speak out about it - when he’s semi-verbal anyway.. Perhaps it’s because she’s a certified weirdo herself or it’s the strange weaponry she carries but either way Demo is unsettled by the idea of whatever additional weirdness she may attract. Cass, on the other hand, finds this incredibly rich coming from a man with a haunted eye socket but who is she to argue with the sage wisdom of a drunk.

Nicknames: Amelia Literally thinks she’s Amelia Earhart & continues to refer to her as Amelia despite any & all attempts to correct him otherwise. When confronted with any evidence to the contrary, he only swells with pride at the unshakable belief that her love for America was so great that she resurrected & fought death itself to come back to it. At times he insists that her plane must be part of a covert eagle release/ freedom bombing operation & always likes to ask her how many commie bastards she’s shot down with it. Cass, having had past animosities with Amelia, is never quite sure how to respond to his clearly extensive head injuries & usually just finds herself going through her pack of cigarettes that much faster whenever dealing with him.

Nicknames: pipe dweller, vagrant, train jumper As you might expect, Spy finds Cass to be an unimaginable travesty to both her profession & common standards. Having the most intelligence on her prior history that bordered on feral, he feels she makes most vagrants look charming by comparison & of course doesn’t hesitate to tell her so. To some extent Spy acknowledges & sympathizes for the conditions that made Cass who she is but often in the way that one might sympathize for an infirmed dog that needs to be put down behind a shed. Despite finding him obnoxiously pompous, french & kind of a dick, Cass honestly appreciates Spy..a little.  She may not be fond of his attitude or his fondness for pretentious attire or the way he smells like an unwashed sock ¾ of the time but she’s able to tell he’s a man who’s on top of things & always puts himself on the line for his team and for that he has her respect (if little of anything else.)

Nicknames: barnstormer, rambler, mountain momma (& sometimes hustler) Sharing a number of regional similarities, Engineer is a relatable breath of fresh air. Cass may not have the slightest what goes on in that eggheaded, tinker-y cranium of his but his easy going, can-do attitude is one she can always gel with effortlessly. Always down for beer & a tune, Cass enjoys drinking with Engineer & occasionally engaging in impromptu jam sessions with him; adding her harmonica to his guitar. Engineer finds Cass’ company enjoyable enough despite finding her strange & a bit rough around the edges. Even so, he appreciates her fighting spirit & overall see’s a lot of potential in her if she could just smarten up more & hustle less but Engineer also recognizes he isn’t telling her something she doesn’t already know. Even so, Cass appreciates his honesty & all the familiar southern-isms he uses to convey it. Outside of that the two couldn’t be more different & he may as well be speaking a moon language anytime he has goes into detail about his inventions or generally anything outside of simple conversation.

aaa but srsly this makes my heart so stupidly happy & I sincerely can’t thank you enough for taking the time & love to put this together & render it so beautifully! having these two interact is always such a treasure to me & I just love the idea that hunter has just as many antics to dish out on a tuesday night as cass lol. seriously, this tickles me so much. girl is an absolute force & cass is here for it.
