Late reply but I ABSOLUTELY AGREE WITH YOU, Spectra is from the start such a difficult character to talk and work with because his pride and quest for power always get in the way of him forming any meaningful connection with people around him, but GUS IS THE EXCEPTION (and that happens even from the first half of NV as you said which is just wow).
And despite having the first glimpse of Spectra's unmasked face after the fight with Mira, he still wears a facade, that proud smile and empty eyes; we only truly see him vulnerable without the mask after he wakes up next morning, with Gus most likely having watched over him the entire night 😭 I just can't, they make me so insane and I'm so glad you replied to my insane ramble tysm 💙💙💙💙
The “jacket scene” – short analysis
I’m back with yet another pointless analysis that nobody asked for, but hey, I missed these gay alien dorks so here u go :P
All of us spectragus / specgus enjoyers must have been tormented all this time by one scene in particular, one that subtly suggests, right from the first half of NV, that there may be something more to this pair than a master/right-hand man dynamic. And yes, I’m talking about the infamous jacket scene.

dun dun dun duuuun
Nobody say you saw it coming.
As simple as it may look, I want to get behind the reason this scene even occurred and why the way the writers included it was such a smart move.
…So there I was a young lad, watching the newest episode of NV on TV, without any clue of how the episode was about to begin. The opening theme song ends. Episode 16 starts. Without a warning, my eyes marvel at the first scene:

Surely – apart from the scream I let out - my mind began to ask the questions: why would Spectra need to be covered by Gus’s jacket? Why can’t he just cover himself up with his own giant fluffy feathered coat? Spectra’s coat looked way warmer, so it seemed illogical that he took it off while sleeping and didn’t even use it as a blanket, right? But I finally had a closer look now, years later and I made the following points:
In the 11th episode, the Vestals’ first visit on Earth is Alice’s homeland, Russia, which presents them with a completely new weather phenomenon: snow. Observe this picture:

Spectra’s coat is so long that it definitely touched and even went through some of that snow. Here, it just barely touches the ground, but compared to Gus’s jacket, and given that the level of snow varies around them, I would say it must have definitely brushed the snow and as a result the jacket got wet and cold.
You can’t tell me that after going through that roof, he just completely missed the snow covering it…

Even though it may look warm, Spectra’s coat was NOT made for wet conditions; that piece of clothing consists of more than 50% feathers while the rest looks like a fabric that resembles leather/ fake leather, given the shine it has.
So just like the rest of his outfit, Spectra’s coat is nothing more than an ornament, it doesn’t really hold any practicality (to his defense, Vestals may never have to confront with rain or snow on their planet, but still, feathers,,,,)
Yes, there’s been some time between episode 11 and 16, but it’s not enough for Spectra’s thousands of feathers to dry. What occurred during this gap? Spectra and Gus manage to outsmart dr. Michael’s teleporting machine and yet again follow the brawlers in Dan’s hometown. Here, they spend little time going around the amusement park, before being spotted by Mira and getting into a fight – Gus is defeated by Mira, with Julie’s aid and Spectra reveals his face as a result. That’s it. There’s not enough time for his coat to dry.
(This makes Julie’s remark “Aren’t you guys hot in those coats?” even funnier cuz Spectra must have been freezing like a wet chicken in that moment).
So putting all these together, we can reach a logical conclusion to why he took off his coat instead of keeping it on or using it as a blanket during the night. The coat was still too cold and damp and he discarded it to let it dry.
But, but, but!
This raises the following question: did Gus offer Spectra his jacket before he fell asleep or did he sneakily threw it on him afterwards? The second option seems more plausible to me, since Spectra would have never accepted he is vulnerable to cold and he looks somewhat surprised when he finds himself covered in the morning.

Gus's jacket must have felt so warm and cozy, why can't I be covered by it too?
Now, why do I consider this first scene to be a smart move from the writers? It’s because right from the start it conveys to the viewers a lot of information.
Spectra and Gus’s shelter is a warehouse in a fairly remote area; which means they’d been completely alone, the entire night, just the two of them. Do I need to add more?
We see Gus’s jacket and we conclude he’s absent from Spectra’s side – which is a rare occurrence, especially without Spectra’s order;
Spectra looks very exposed here, he’s unmasked, he doesn’t wear his red coat, which represents his status as the leader of the Vexos / HEX and as a Pyrus brawler. The only thing shielding him from the outside world is Gus’s jacket – a much accurate symbolism for their following discussion when Gus seems to smother Spectra with his worries.
Gus’s jacket feels safe and warm, but Spectra is driven by ambition and revenge and quickly leaves this place of comfort. The first thing he looks for is his mask. As soon as it’s back on, he resumes his quest for power.

Anyways, that’s all I have for now folks, hope you enjoyed this rant-analysis that only manages to expose how insane I am over this ship haha. See ya another time when I decide to write again (hopefully soon enough)! > o <
I’m aware that folding Gus’s jacket was too much of a considerate thing for him to do in that moment, but it sure could have been a nice way to show his gratitude sigh. That’s why I’m convinced that when he loses Gus almost for good in the second half of NV, Spectra keeps his jacket and takes care of it like it’s the most precious thing he has left (he also held on to Gus’s bee device, which he must have found in Gus’s pocket, so did Spectra search through the jacket in a desperate attempt to find a clue about Gus’s whereabouts? I’m going mad over this thought alone).
#I didn't mean to rant more but#we enabled each other's hyperfixation with spectra and gus huh#nothing to see here just spectragus enjoyers getting united by the crumbs cuz of how starved we are#spectra x gus#spectragus

Dear Lady Archiviste one day I'll draw you properly with all your glorious braids
Alcohol markers and white ink on paper
I tried alcohol markers for the first time and this stuff is HARD. I'd probably be done way faster with watercolor. But also...that skin texture blending is undeniable
#the texture and colours are absolutely beautiful#i'm mesmerized#I realized I missed your art so much#vanitas no carte

too many stories about turning yourself into a monster as a metaphor for pretending to be something you aren't and losing yourself in the process. not enough stories about turning yourself into a monster as a metaphor for choosing to openly embrace yourself even if it's strange to other people

Reading order: left -> right, top -> bottom.
I don’t know why I chose sunflowers of all things; I can’t draw sunflowers, I dislike drawing sunflowers, and thus I made a 5 pages comic about sunflowers - a sunflower field no less.
#I'm gonna kiss both your hands for making this masterpiece op#I love Izaya's fascination for myths and how you played into that#the sunflowers facing Shizuo in the last panel was just *chef's kiss#and Izaya facing him while being covered by a sunflower#I cant stop rambling this is my favourite thing now#durarara#izaya orihara#shizuo heiwajima

Friend (@violet-gleam) has been posting her Bakugan OCs, figured it's my turn
The very first concepts for this character must have been made in 2018, they're the direct reason for my nickname, they've gone from being a self-insert-ish mary sue (I'm cringe but I'm free) to a cyborg with a pseudophilosphical science-fiction storyline, they're important to me and I love them dearly
Might post some of their lore on another day, or you could ask about them if you wanna!
#so what if I say the split dyed hair is peak character design#i really like the colour scheme!!!#waiting patiently for their lore
