Au where instead of Gorthalax Sandralynn ran into a corrupted creature in her nightmares who was absolutely in a rough place and who's girlfriend was corrupted at the moment, and that's how Fig was created. this au was made simply because Fig should get an au for her gaydar clocking the Nightmare King as a lesbian around 5 minutes into her opener, also it makes Fig becoming Ankarna's paladin in junior year much funnier considering Sandralynn and Ankarna just awkwardly staring at each other.
look, im not gonna lie. i dont know if ill ever finish this. im already near 5k and its not finishing any time soon. have the first 2.7k technically snippet and please forgive my procrastinating ass
Against contrary belief, Fig is not a tiefling in every known universe. In some worlds, she is the beloved full elven daughter of Gilear and Sandra Lynn Faeth. In others, her mother never married but had a one night stand with a human, resulting with a half elven daughter who she gave away to avoid the pain of watching her die. In another, she is still the daughter of Gorthalax, but she never knew her mother and instead was raised in the hells awaiting her father's return.
In this universe, shit went absolutely haywire from the get go.
~~~ ~~~
It all started with a rescue mission which sent Sandra Lynn to Fallinel. A group of young Aguefort Academy students defeated an evil wizard in a tough battle, and as a last act of revenge he sent them all to a forgotten forest in the hopes whatever dwells there will finish them off. Thankfully, one of the kids had a parent in the Solisian rangers and was able to make contact in record time. The rescue party came, the kids were healed and all was well.
Well, except for Baxter taking a bad hit in the forest and needed to catch his breath before flying back to Elmville.
Some of the other rangers asked if someone should stay with her, but Sandra Lynn waved them off. They were in a safe location, Baxter is just being a bit of a baby and those kids need as many adults looking over them as possible. They didn't have to know Sandra Lynn secretly wanted to stay behind to enjoy some time off while technically on the clock.
So now Sandra Lynn laid on Baxter's wings as he took a nap to heal his wounds as they both enjoyed the serenity while they could. The standing stones around them gave them a lovely shade to hide under from the glaring sun, and it became harder and harder not to fall into an actual slumber.
If Sandra Lynn wasn't bone tired, warning bells would have gone off since elves don't sleep. The dream took over before any thought or reason could come through and she found herself in a mysterious hollow world, complete in pitch blackness with the only light coming from a deep pit.
Going off on dream logic, Sandra Lynn ran to the glowing hole in the ground in the hopes something there will wake her up. She stopped in her tracks as more beings came to view, mysterious shards of lights that were more blinding than welcoming. They were slamming their fit down on the embers to kill them out, grinning and snickering as they did so.
Sandra Lynn wouldn't have that. She drew out her arrows and shot them all straight in the head, not bothering to give them a glance as they fell over dead. Instead she focused on running to the dying fire and trying her best to keep it alive, breathing on it and giving it some of her arrows to keep it alive.
A voice rumbled from the pit. "Why do you not fear the fire I bring?"
"I have faced the worst kind of monsters this world has to offer," Sandra Lynn stated. "A little burn is worth it if I save someone's life."
"I am not the kind fire warmth you keep alive in the hearth of your home," the fire spoke back to her. "I am destruction. I am ruination. I only devour and consume and leave others to wilt in the dirt. I am the rage of monsters, the drive of conquers and the blaze that burns deep in your heart. Do you still wish me saved?"
Sandra Lynn bit her lip. "I don't think that's true. I can tell there is something different about you, something bigger than what you say. Now stop flaking, I am just about close to saving you."
Deciding to take a risk, Sandra Lynn cast Cure Wounds on the embers, hoping this would count as healing against the damage those odd elementals did to it. It somehow worked, and from the fire rose a beautiful goddess in battle armor, her appearance and air changing the world around them into a hellish scenery.
The goddess smiled down on the woman that saved her. "You have aided a divine being without fear or thought. I do not know whether to call you a hero or a fool."
"Both," Sandra Lynn choked out. "Both would be a good fit right now."
The goddess chuckled. "Fair point. You have rescued a small portion of my being from this prison, and now I must repay you in kind. Tell me, mortal, what does your heart wish for most?"
Now, in any other scenario, Sandra Lynn would have known better than to tell a mysterious otherworldly being her greatest desire. But this is still a dream, and following dream logic, she couldn't keep it inside anymore. "A child. I want a baby. I haven't had a chance to speak about it with my husband yet, but I want one so badly that it scares me sometimes."
The goddess nodded in understanding. "I know that pain well enough. I promise you this, Sandra Lynn Faeth of the Solician rangers; your child shall never have to fear the pain of a losing battle. Their life shall be GLORIOUS!"
Fire erupted from every corner of the world, and Sandra Lynn woke up with a start with Baxter chirping in worry over her sudden jumping. She petted his beak softly and apologized, giving him a treat to calm him down slowly.
Glancing around the stones, Sandra Lynn decided not to push her luck and flew away before anything else could happen. The aura had significantly changed, and during the whole ride home, she could swear she could feel the sun glaring at her.
It was probably just left over jitters from the weird dream she had. There was no way it will hold some actual consequences, right?
~~~ ~~~
The positive pregnancy test that laid on the dinner table told her otherwise. Sandra Lynn had her head in her hands with Gilear slowly rubbing her shoulders.
Those kinds of things never happened to her. Even during her short tenure as an adventurer and Solician ranger, she never bumped into anything mythical on a level that can alter her life forever (no matter how hard the Dawns tried.) When she got home, she told Gilear about the crazy dream she had, waved him off when he told her maybe it was something big after all and went straight to bed to recover from the whole ordeal.
It has been almost a month since that day happened, and after a week of morning sickness and weird cramps on her lower back, Sandra Lynn admitted defeat and bought that damned test from a local drug store. One positive test later and she came back again to buy five more just in case the first one was faulty.
This was the tenth one she tried out and just the fact that she had to pee this much truly set this case closed.
Sandra Lynn wanted to cry. "I didn't know she was somehow gonna get me pregnant, I swear."
Gilear messaged her upper back. "I know, dear heart. I don't think any of us could have foreseen this outcome. Once your mind clears, perhaps we should start looking for baby supply on sale."
Sandra Lynn lifted her head and stared at Gilear in shock. “You still wanna be with me? Even after I got knocked by a different being?”
“Well, it’s not as if you betrayed my trust. Besides, three-parent baby are a thing, we just happen to have one without meaning to.” He held her hand in his. “This is still going to be our child, even by unconventional means. I would love to raise them with you, if you’ll still have me.”
Sandra Lynn couldn’t hold her tears back anymore and fell onto Gilear’s arms, sobbing pathetically into his shoulder. “This was supposed to be my line, you jerkface.”
Gilear held her close, but notably did not get near her stomach. “I am sorry, my love. I promise, I’ll be less emotionally intelligent next time we have such a discussion.”
Sandra Lynn laughed into his shoulders and melted into his embrace. She has a feeling the baby and even the preparations before that are gonna be a disaster, but at least this moment will help her through the day.
~~~ ~~~
Once again Sandra Lynn was proven wrong, but this time she wasn’t so angry about it.
The progression of her pregnancy went surprisingly smooth. The baby was developing normally, there wasn’t any complication during the nine month process and Gilear not once has shown disdain for raising someone else’s baby. Even the ultrasound was fairly normal, with the only thing Sandra noticed was that the little elven ears were not as pointed as they should be. Whatever “blessed” them was not an elf deity.
Which brings them to the only problem they’re been through so far; they could not for the life of them figure out who was the secret divine parent.
They tried going back to the stones and read anything there but the language was too foreign and the writing too faded. The being never told Sandra Lynn its name and whenever she tried remembering her face, she could only recollect the feeling of fire and summer wind. Even during the check ups, the doctors could tell there was a third party involved but couldn’t detect who or what it was. A kind nurse told them their situation was unique and any more tests are just a waste of their money and they should save it for baby clothes and diapers before the hospital could con them more and so they had to leave it be.
By the time the birth finally happened, Sandra Lynn was terrified out of her mind. She didn’t know what she was birthing, how it’s gonna come out or if it is even gonna be humanoid. She could only shout in misery as the pains hit one right after the other while holding Gilear’s hand for dear life and cursing out anyone who dares to go near her.
Then the sharp cry of a newborn pierced through the room, and once the baby was placed in her arms, nothing else seemed to matter.
The baby, a girl, her daughter, was truly the most beautiful thing Sandra Lynn had ever seen. Ten perfect little fingers and lungs the size of a war ship if her screaming was anything to go by. She had her mother’s brown hair and eyes and nearly everything else, but the way she blinked up at her reminded her a bit of Gilear. There weren't any golden veins, horns or wings of any kind. It seems that whoever that was truly just gave them a perfect little angel only in the metaphorical sense.
Sometimes later, as the nurses come to check on them and guide Gilear into the proper way of holding their baby, Sandra Lynn felt truly at peace for the first time in maybe a decade. She was just about to rest her eyes when a nurse asked what they named their baby girl.
“Figuerot,” Gilear proclaimed proudly as he rocketed their little bundle. “Figuerot Faeth.”
~~~ ~~~
When Sandra Lynn first figured out she was pregnant, she vowed to tell her baby everything once they were old enough to understand. She knew how secrets could ruin families, and the last thing she wanted was for her precious girl to find any reason to distrust her own family.
That idea went right out the window around the time Fig was a few days old and Sandra Lynn got a warning from principal Aguefort to stop asking questions about who Fig’s third parent could possibly be.
According to him, whatever blessed their family was actually a corrupt form of a god, and drawing any attention to them could lead to ruination. Even the almighty Arthur Aguefort did not dare to delve deeper out of fear of ruining the timeline and possibly causing the end of the world. All he was able to find before the warning signs came on was that Fig was now tied to something either giant, celestial or infernal. His personal theory was that the being Sandra Lynn met was a fallen god who’s name was not forgotten but erased to ensure the safety of the world.
Thank god Sandra Lynn was not holding Fig or she would have dropped everything she had on her from terror.
At least Arthur seemed sympathetic instead of his usual bravado. “I am deeply sorry this fate had to fall on you, Mrs Faeth. If it makes you feel any better, your daughter is not cursed in any way. But you might want to baby proof the ceiling in case she gets wings early on-”
Sandra Lynn felt her soul leave her body as Arthur went on. He coughed into his fist. “You know what? I should just do this myself. You are a new mother, I have a lot of free time, it was pretty rude of me to ask you to begin with. Let’s just pretend I didn’t say that.”
With a snap of his fingers, he disappeared in a flash of light and the edges of the ceiling all had safety foam put in the edges. There was a book in her hand titled “How To Handle Your Flying Baby” and a box of chocolate on the table.
Sandra Lynn wanted to scream. She wanted to cry until her throat was sore, tear out her bangs with a knife and run away to the hills to fight whoever put this destiny on her little girl.
But then Fig was crying from her crib because it was time for her lunch, and Sandra Lynn knew she didn’t have time for any of that. Her baby needed her. This was no room for a breakdown.
~~~ ~~~
She of course told Gilear everything Aguefort said and they both agreed best to keep it quiet for as long as they could. They spend the rest of their maternity leave monitoring every little habit and noise Fig made in case some signs of the divine came from her. She didn’t fly, didn’t glow and didn’t seem to have any moments where she acted far older than she already is.
By the time Sandra Lynn dared to go back to work with Fig strapped to her chest as her coworkers cooed and awed over her kid, some of her stress loosened up a bit. Fig was as normal as any toddler in the world. She giggled when you tickled her stomach. She cried if she couldn't find her griffin stuffed toy. She would throw a temper tantrum if a stranger touched but would calm down if Gilear or Sandra Lynn were around. The only thing that worried Sandra was some of her weird behavioral issues as she got older, but an ADHD diagnosis cleared their worries enough.
As the years went by, Sandra Lynn dared to loosen up little by little as Fig reaction more to the world around her.
When Fig was five, Sandra Lynn signed her to guitar lessons because her little sweetheart fell in love with female rock musicians. She lost teeth in normal speed and rate, got her knees scraped when she played with friends and adored riding on Gilear’s shoulders.
When she was nine, she joined her middle school’s gymnastic team and impressed the girls so much, they almost begged her to sign up for cheer too. She wore light pink and sometimes purples and begged her mom to let her get her ears pierced so she could match the cooler kids at school.
When she was thirteen, she was sobbing on the couch as Gilear and Sandra Lynn explained their reasoning for a divorce. It wasn’t that they hated each other, the love just changed over time and they think separating romantically will be good for them. No, this isn’t her fault, this was entirely their’s. Gilear will move out because Baxter needs the space in the backyard. She will always be welcomed wherever she decides to stay. They both love her so much and want her to be happy. That will never change.
When she was fourteen, her horns grew out, and all hell broke loose.
