Some Famous Paintings in the United States
Tumblr media
The early American art masterpieces were mostly influenced by the English painting technique. Although numerous well-known American artists emerged throughout the 19th century, it was not until the 20th century that the great American painters began to gain international recognition. This article aims to look at some of the works made by great American artists. One famous American painting is the Dibble Residence, also known as the American Gothic House, a house in Eldon, Iowa, United States. The home is built in the style of Rural Gothic architecture. Grant Wood, a painter famed for images of rural American Midwest life, observed the Dibble House in August 1930 and drew it on the back of an envelope. After gaining permission from the occupants, he drew the house on paperboard the next day. Dr. Byron McKeeby, his dentist, played the gentleman, while Nan Wood Graham, his sister, played the woman. The Dibble House featured in the Art Institute of Chicago's annual show in 1930 earned a bronze medal. It was purchased by the museum, where it is still on display. American Gothic is one of the most well-known paintings in American art from the 20th century, and it has been parodied in popular culture. Another famous American Painting is the Whistler's Mother by James McNeill Whistler. His mother, Anna McNeill Whistler, is the subject of this artwork. The artwork became a symbol of motherhood, love for parents, and family values in America. In 1934, the United States Postal Service released a stamp with a stylized image of Whistler's Mother and the text "In Memory and Honor of America's Mothers." Whistler's Mother has been compared to the Mona Lisa of the Victorian era and remains one of the most well-known portraits by an American artist. Further, Freedom From Want is another example of a famous American painting. Norman Rockwell painted four paintings in 1943, each representing one of the four freedoms stated by US President Franklin D. Roosevelt in his famous 1941 address. The third and most well-known artwork in the series is Freedom from Want. It displays a multi-generational family gathered for a holiday feast around a dining table. The grandma is preparing to place the turkey on the table as the grandfather smiles and prepares to slice it. The people in the picture are Rockwell's friends and family, who were taken separately and then painted into the setting. The painting became a symbol of family unity, peace, and abundance, perceived as an example of mastery of the problems of white-on-white painting from an artistic standpoint. Freedom from Want has become America's most famous Thanksgiving depiction. In addition, ‘Untitled’ is another famous American painting. It was painted by Jean-Michel Basquiat is known for being one of the most expensive paintings ever, having been acquired for $110.5 million by a Japanese billionaire in 2017. Basquiat's artwork features a bizarre yet vibrant picture of a skull embossed with a variety of colors on a blue backdrop. The picture depicts life in 1980s large city America, with certain sections resembling the graffiti that adorned the artist's Brooklyn neighborhood during his adolescent years.
