Short story for catlia.net, a pet adopt site due for release in late 2021!

Princess Violet “Violet, please, at least try to make conversation with the others,” Queen Amethyst begged the little princess, smiling apologetically across the table. There was no response from Violet herself (save for a rather vicious stab at her dessert), but the moon outside waned slightly. “I know you feel uncomfortable with everyone’s eyes on you, but - just do your best,” the queen continued. As Violet fidgeted, the moon continued to darken. Tendrils of silvery mist obscured its surface, mirroring the hazy look in her eyes. “I wish I was somewhere else...like the moon,” she sighed. And suddenly, in a whirl of stars, she was. They all were. “Wha-?” spluttered King Aureolin, so startled that he dropped a glob of jam on his cloak. He hastily looked around to see if anyone had noticed. Nobody had. They were all looking at each other in confusion, some with upended goblets, others with food smeared all over their otherwise pristine outfits. Mocha pouted, trying to wipe away the multiple fried eggs that had landed rather ceremoniously on him. Queen Amethyst snorted. “Well, Violet, you certainly got your wish.”

Queen Violet Violet peered over the parapet at the cheering crowd below, and winced. She knew this day would come eventually, but she thought she still had time. Years. Decades. It’d only been a month since the king and queen had departed for the Telltale Abyss. They’d be back any day now, so there was no need to crown a new monarch immediately - right? As fanfare erupted and confetti showered all over Catlia Castle, Mocha padded up to Violet’s side. “I’ll dress up as you if you’d like,” he joked, and Violet desperately wished he was serious. “Could you, actually? I’ll even let you sit on the throne and try on the crown.” Mocha looked like he was really considering accepting, just to see if he could get away with it, when one of the royal advisors cleared their throat. Oh. Plan foiled. With no other alternative, Violet stepped up to the podium and did her best to look composed and regal. “Um… Thank you for attending. As you know, uh, my mother and father have been absent for...for just over a month now. We have not received any...further news...” Violet trailed off, fervently wishing she could change the laws of succession as easily as she’d transported them all to the moon. She made accidental eye contact with Meika, who gave her an encouraging nod. “So in their stead...I will ensure Catlia is under my protection. I...um, pledge my loyalty, to...to the...the people of our great kingdom, and...will do all I can to maintain ties with, er...our allies in Minora.” Discarding the remaining pages of her speech in utter panic, Violet squeaked out a “Thank you all!” and froze. The head royal advisor stepped up. “I now crown thee Queen Violet of Catlia,” he intoned, so perfectly formal that Violet grimaced at her own botched delivery. He placed the crown on her head. It was a replica of her mother’s, silver with emerald accents. She instantly felt like a child playing dress-up, but did her best to hold her head high. It was done. She was now Queen Violet. She was also out of here, scurrying away as quickly as her little paws could carry her. Before the sun had even set, whispers whistled around the kingdom. It should be her brother. I thought she was going to faint and fall off the balcony. That speech felt like pure suffering. She’ll only be a figurehead - she won’t be able to stand up to her advisors. She’s not fit to rule. The latter had been hissed by a maid, who dropped to a mortified curtsey when she rounded a corner and nearly crashed into Violet and Mocha. “You are fit to rule,” insisted Mocha, reaching for Violet’s paw and squeezing it in his own. “I’ll help you.”

Update: Meika, the Shopkeeper

Left to your own devices, you decide to explore the castle. All sorts of beings pass you by - some fierce and thunderous, others extremely delicate and carefully flitting through the crowd. You're starting to feel a little faint when someone reaches out and steadies you with a very fluffy paw.

"Hi! Are you alright there?"

You look down. Err. Up? One of those. A small, shaggy dog blinks back at you.

Before you can respond, she continues. "Oh! You must be new to these parts. My store's just around the corner if you need to find a spot to yourself."

She zooms off, deftly navigating the crowd. You struggle not to lose sight of her. It turns out that "just around the corner" really meant "about five thousand steps away".

As you make a mental note to never trust anyone's measure of time or space ever again, the dog stops in front of an overflowing stall. Meika's Market is emblazoned in fancy gold lettering on a red banner.

As you approach, Meika - presumably - introduces herself. "Welcome! I know you're just about to ask, and I meant to say so earlier, but...I'm Meika, owner of the best market in Catlia! Please, make yourself at home. I can show you around later, if you'd like."

Hey! Welcome to the development blog for Catlia, an upcoming pet site with a fantasy theme and a variety of species to collect.

In a parallel universe, a magical cat monarchy has been established on the moon. Without humans catering to their every whim, the cats were in grave peril - until they discovered they could harness the power of the moon to perform magic. With their newfound abilities, they have been slowly catnapping different animal species from Earth over the years, but haven’t collected enough mana to transport humans yet - it is suspected that humans’ complex thoughts make them more difficult to move.

There’s plenty to do in the meantime, at least! Your life as an ordinary cat on the outskirts of Catlia has taken a strange turn after you decide to finally visit the kingdom. After a brush with death (well, after tripping and landing in a puddle), you find that your rescuer is none other than Mocha, the kingdom’s prince.

While you dry off in the sunshine, Mocha chatters excitedly about what Catlia has to offer:

Discovering new items/pets through alchemy

Magical potions that may attract rare species

Quests with special rewards

Daily events and rewards

Random chance shops/Shops with set stock

...and probably other things, but alas. Mocha regretfully explains that he must attend to his royal duties, and wishes you luck.
