Maybe I didn't get something but the romance between Zosya and Ostap felt so out of place.

What did he find in her? It wasn't ever explained. People (and other animals) prefer mates who are similar to them, this is called assortative mating. What do they have in common?

I can imagine him settling down, but the alternative ending felt so out of place. What's the point? The alternative finale felt extremely soviet, so maybe the authors wanted to satisfy soviet censors by explicitly setting the main character to assimilate into soviet society.
