"I warn you that in times of great economic chaos, especially when people had dreams of affluence that they now are not going to realize-and when they are not able to have even the choices their parents had economically-women are at risk. We will be told, "You were wrong to think you could have it all. You must repent of your aggressive ways, you must repent of your ambition." In times of fear and anxiety people will be looking for false scapegoats, false solutions, and one of those solutions will be that all of this can be solved by sending women home again."
--Betty Friedan
She originally said this in the 80s, btw.

I’m almost positive that it was a smear campaign created after she scrutinized record labels for not providing health insurance to new artists during her Grammy acceptance speech. And an embarrassing amount of people took the bait.
I agree that this kind of thing happens whenever a woman gets too popular, too talented, too admirable. The public will do anything to tear her down. Ppl did it with Jennifer Lawrence and Anne Hathaway and the fact that Chappell is a lesbian in a time where conservatism is rising to power really put the nail in the coffin.
Couldn’t be me tho, stream The Giver.
it's so crazy to me how within the space of a year the internet's 'widespread' opinion of chappell roan has swung from admiration of an outspoken and refreshing new performer to huge hate trains whenever she so much as breaths. nothing has changed with her as a person, she is still projecting the exact same messages she always did, and yet comparing comments now to a year ago really highlights how active misogyny and homophobia are within media spaces. it's like 'ok, we let a gay woman get too big, how do we tear her down and black her out of these spaces?'. every single thing she says is twisted when before it was a breath of fresh air, now even what she wears is being torn apart instead of being revolutionary - the u-turn is giving me whiplash. and people wonder why we don't have more gay women in the media when men who have done far, far worse are never exposed to this kind of mass villainization

the philosophers of our time are on tumblr dot com
#rhaenicentVSrhaenicent#like I truly love them but also I lowkey hate that the showrunners leaned into it so hard#this is my hot take where I say I kinda love queerbaiting#bc then the fans can go crazy and stupid and so much beautiful love and fanfic and fanart is born#but when they just GIVE it to us even when it doesn’t make sense narratively…#idk like it just doesn’t live up to its potential#like I think szn 2 could have been fine if they stuck with the parallels between them#but shoving it down our throats by creating scenes where Alicent suddenly decides to betray her family for Rhae#or I loved the visuals of them at the sept#but it just…didn’t make sense#my discourse here is an example of my love I’m not tearing it down 💕

It's rare that I critique bg3 but I do feel like the sussur blooms not having a massive impact on Gale's orb was a missed opportunity. Gimme the orb freaking out bc suddenly there is no weave for it to feed off of, gimme Gale in more pain than normal because of the pure Karsite weave sitting in his chest with only his life as fuel. Gimme a ticking timer until the orb explodes unless Gale gets far enough away from the blooms.
#I’ve been getting into alchemy a lot more this playthru#and I’m so mad that I can’t make it into a poison or something

Actually makes me furious that people ask for complex and morally ambiguous women in fiction and when they get one it's like all critical thinking has gone out the window and they label her as the most evil character ever and hurl sexist slurs her way and refuse to actually think about what she's doing and why she's doing it.

i cannot keep quiet about this anymore.
if you're in the US or Canada and interested in learning a language using a free app please get a library card and download MANGO. it's very good and extremely free with a library card (there are many public libraries and universities using the service, so make an account and use the search feature here to find out if there's one near you).
mango currently has 72 available languages and dialects (that's right! different courses for french or canadian french! spanish or latam spanish!). it's set up basically like an audiobook with text. the idea is that the narrator explains the words while you read, and you repeat after them or say the translation out loud when prompted. there's a daily review where you go through flashcards. you can also use the flashcards at your leisure and create your own. at the end of each chapter there's a listening comprehension quiz and a reading comprehension quiz. i cannot emphasize how effective this all is. and it's free with a card.
if you're not in the US or Canada and/or looking for something more like duolingo (don't use duolingo btw tldr they fired translators and replaced them with "ai"), then try BUSUU! it only has 14 languages atm but the lessons are really descriptive and effective. it also has a feature where you can correct other people's open-ended speaking/typing exercises. you set your fluent languages, and exercises by people learning those languages will appear in your feed for you to correct. you can even add others as friends! and, much like duolingo, it has a streak and leaderboard system for you to strive for, minus the guilt-tripping owl.
busuu is free (you watch ads to unlock lessons and they're all skippable after like five seconds), although it also has paid premium/plus versions (i don't use the paid version—the language courses are available for free, and the ad system is Really unobtrusive).
so that's my wisdom for the day. mango and busuu. please check them out :)
