I think the one thing that kills me about X Readers is when it states it's an x reader in the title, so I automatically assume it's gender neutral. Cuz I am trans (ftm), that's what I perceive.
But what sucks is that when it doesn't state female, GN, male, or even trans man/female and then I see mentions of a bra and a pussy, then I feel like the cis female gender norm is being pushed onto me. And for me I try desperately to follow the Male Reader tags along with other x reader tags based off fandoms I'm in, but every damn time, bam! Female reader is the one that pops up.
Am I openly venting about this? Yes. Because the state of fanfics is disappointing when they all center primarily around a female reader and the amount of them is staggering.

note: if you read this and find a problem with the amount of swearing, get the fuck over yourself and pull your head out of your ass. I'll use whatever fucking colourful language i wanna use, stop being so fucking terminally online.
I'd never do that fucking amab/afab!reader shit; if the reader's a dude, he's a dude regardless of how he were born, that makes him male. end of the fuckin story. agab has fuck all to do w a person's gender and, quite frankly, it makes you sound like a fuckin shit for brains little cunt when you say shit like "amab = boy = masc" or "afab = girl = femme". you sound fucking stupid.
idc if you're "more comfortable" using agab (which means fuck all, it's like saying whether or not the reader has earlobes ffs. it's entirely irrelevant), if your reader is a woman - she's fem. she's a fem!reader. tag it fucking accordingly instead of trying to separate people based on something so fucking stupid that, by using it, you sound like one of them stupid cunts that says shit like "women and (afab) nonbinary people only".
cut your fucking shit.
all your excuses are piss poor and half the time you sound like fucking terf cunts as it is; a person's agab is fuck all to do w who they actually are, same as something like having fucking ginger hair is - so why fucking mention it at all? bc the thing is, a lot of you stupid cunts who do this shit and add the agab, you're just excluding people for the sake of it then acting like cunts about it for the fucking sake of it, and you sound like fucking gender essentialist cunts who spew nonsense in all. you stupid bastards.
if your reader is GENUINELY gender neutral, tag them as a gn/gender neutral!reader. if they're agender, tag them as an agender!reader. if they're a dude (regardless of if they're cis or trans), it's m/male!reader. and if they're nonbinary? nb/nonbinary!reader. it's literally that fucking simple, why the fuck do you lot feel the need to fucking pull this stupid agab shit when it's not even fucking relevant to the actual fucking writing for fuck's sake.

Erastus (not his birth name) and his brother Theophiles were inseparable as kids like twins usually are, they were the kids the village raised in absence of their parents who had high standing and liked to swap places when one didn't want to do something by taking advantage of their identicalness.
Theo would pick the herbs and flowers Eras didn't want to and Erastus would do the heavy lifting chores put on Theo's back as a "young man". Theo was a romantic who grew up on their father's stories and of course wanted to go on adventures like he did and become a great hero who made the world a safer place. Eras didn't have the same drive but he was content to entertain his brother's fantasies for the time being.
Eventually they started to drift as they got older when Erastus got bored of hearing about a man he's never seen and never loved him as far as he'd concerned, but he loves his brother more than anything, so he hangs around for his sake. Eras also spends a lot of time watching the warriors because he wants to keep his idiot starry eyed brother safe and the men think he's an endearing enough kid with some skills that would prove useful given the right guidance.
He's also hiding his gender to even hang around them but. you know. They lived a peaceful life, grew up together, their bond waxes and wanes through the years and different friend groups but never breaks, until one day their village is attacked by a beast while the warriors are away and in order to save his brother Erastus slays it; Theo wasn't doing nothing either, he got in-between one of the younger kids and the beast but couldn't do much else.
Things start kicking up from that day forward - the boys are invited to join the warriors' ranks and everything Theophiles ever wanted seems to come true since he's finally rolling with the big dogs, going on epic adventures, forging bonds with his fellow warriors, but something just doesn't feel right.
For one, he's not the one being celebrated or getting to slay any fabled beasts like he imagined, but two it seems like the gap between him and his brother has only widened.
Like he's just a man standing before statues made for the gods even if they're in the same room. One night Theo accidentally lets it slip while he's inebriated after being pressured to drink by his peers and complains about his discontent that none of this would've happened if anyone knew what his brother's "real" identity was - he lies to clarify when someone asks but a few soldiers already overheard.
The next time Theo sees his brother it's bloodied and dragging that soldier's body by his hair, their commanders immediately demand to know what's going on - it takes a bit of prying and swords pointed at his throat but eventually he fesses up to the captain in a hushed tone but just as the look of understanding dawns on him, someone from the crowd outs him out of fear; someone from the same group as that soldier who didn't have the stomach to follow them but was still too gutless not to cave into his guilt.
He cites Theo as the one he heard it from and since he's his brother it has to be true. The look of abject betrayal and then apathy (the same look in his eyes as when he kills) he gets from Eras is burned into Theophiles' memory. The captain eventually calms everyone down before they break out into chaos over the fact that one of their best warriors was "deceiving" them, the verdict is that Eras wasn't in the wrong for retaliation, but for killing higher ranking officers he would be banished to the next island they saw.
Erastus agreed to the terms and ignored every attempt his brother made at communicating with him until they got there, where he says he's an only child.
He's dropped off at Circe's island and immediately finds the palace suspicious, so he sets up camp somewhere nearby and sleeps under a blanket of leaves. He wakes up inside anyway, with the nymphs looking over him curiously and Circe on her throne. He prostrates at her feet, apologizing for his presence in her home uninvited as a man, for fooling her, and accepts his punishment (to be made into an animal).
He's familiar with her reputation from stories as a kid. Circe sees where the blood on him dries, how he flinches and avoids her nymphs, his cowed demeanor in her presence in general. and decides to grant him mercy (Out of pity? Understanding? Who knows) Eras is taken away to be cleaned and fed and after his meal he's given a potion from Circe for "protection", according to her if he drinks this she can't promise what he experienced will never happen again but the likelihood would be greatly reduced.
He drinks it and - by all accounts his outward appearance turns into a man. He spends many years on Circe's island, protecting it from anyone who would bring his goddess or the nymphs harm and at the same time nurturing the humanity he thought lost in times of war.
Another version of his story has him transformed by Aphrodite instead while wandering the land on foot. Whoever it is that ends up helping him is also the one who gives him his current name, Erastus, meaning beloved.
In the meantime, Theo's... not doing well.
Keeping up with the crew, helping to fend off the perils that they face in what little ways he can, he's found his footing in medicine since his brother's banishment but it's lonely in the sick bay most nights.
Those who were close to Eras don't really look him in the eyes even after all this time and other stereotypically masculine bullheaded soldiers don't see him as strong enough to mingle with. It was passable when he was young but as a grown man? It's almost shameful. Something something toxic masculinity and all that.
Imagine his surprise when he comes across his brother again fully realized and just as much a warrior as he was when he left, maybe even better--bigger and taller than him too.
Theo doesn't quite recognize him at first but definitely does when Eras goes running into his older brothers' (two other soldiers) arms, they nearly take his head off but the second it registers who it is they embrace him with open arms. It stings a little, watching the same people Theophiles grew up with hold his brother close when they've (kind of deservedly) kept him at arms length for years post-incident, Hyptos is a little more forgiving but there's still a noticeable shift.
When they're face to face again Erastus looks him in the eye for the first time in years, though Theo has to look UP now, and even though it's only a few words--like Eras always has been--he does talk to him. While the warriors have all grown weary and jaded from their travels he's been allowed to heal and recoup during his travels, the sparks of envy in Theo's bowels light up again.
The next time they set out Erastus introduces himself with his new name, since it's been years since that incident no one would think it was him and whoever would was probably dead or retired, when they set out again it's much the same as their first go around except Theo's MUCH more aware of the rift between them.
Whatever his brother has done in their time apart it's made him a much better warrior that when they started, Theophiles tries to apologize again but Erastus asks him to let the past be in the past, so there's tension just as there is envy clouding his heart again. But still, they're seemingly on good terms again, with little in-jokes and habits they used to share as children building a bridge over the strife they've experienced.
Theo can live with this, Eras hasn't said he's forgiven him but whatever they have here is nice enough to keep - the one thing that hasn't changed is Theo's idolization of their father (a hero, a legend, a demigod?) and his want to find him on their journeys. Eras is a little less supportive than he used to be as kids but what the hell, Theophiles has his beliefs and Erastus has his own.
They sail for a few years rebuilding that bond even with unaddressed tension under the surface and enjoy the time flying by - they're happy, they can make this work.
Everything falls apart when Eras gets captured while he heads into town one day away from the crew alone, a group of men from the crew plot against him after sitting and stewing in envy in the background of all his heroic exploits (not like he sought them out, they kind of just happened), they hear of his time with Circe and for lack of a better term detransition him to his previous form by getting him to spit out the seed with the elixir that Circe gave him while he slept.
Erastus wakes up in a body that's "not his", tied up and being transported somewhere he's never heard of - he hears the men boasting about how they bested a famous hero and how he's not so strong as a maiden now is he the whole time, it's implied they had their way with him.
After the men go to bed Erastus prays to call on the help of the gods, Aphrodite Areia (Aphrodite the Warlike) answers.
He goes on an Odysseus (song) style violent murder spree of every man involved and castrates them for Aphrodite as an offering, when he's done he goes up to a bull tied to a post set for butchering the group passed by earlier and sets it free, drenched in the blood of his enemies but still so tender to it and it alone.
Zeus decides to show himself with the usual flirtatious spiel, Erastus says he's flattered but points out that he's a man, not the maiden he assumed he was so Zeus laughs, snaps his fingers so Eras is returned to his true form with maybe a little more, and says that he knows (the feeling of being watched makes more sense to Eras now, he didn't think his chosen goddess would be so leery).
Zeus says that if he doesn't want to be just another pretty consort, he can be his gladiator as reward for the show he put on. Erastus looks at Zeus' outstretched hand, wait a moment before taking it and kissing the back for His King, then they're gone.
Theo is completely unaware of the plan, just happy to have a semi-functional relationship with his brother again, but he comes back to a massacre and his brother nowhere in sight.
Up on Olympus, Zeus orders some nymphs to wash the blood from him and to drape the man in finery when they get back. Erastus is difficult in the bath because he's still incredibly on edge and hates how the nymphs cling to him, any kind of touch feels like it burns right now (especially from strangers) and they're just not understanding that he wants to be left alone.
Aurelius pops in to see what all the ruckus is all about and they're surprised and gutted to see Eras here, they tell the nymphs to leave him be because they'll handle his bath and eventually, the ladies reluctantly leave.
Erastus gets a moment to breathe while Aurelius washes his back, they don't talk because he's obviously upset and can't really communicate verbally (he doesn't talk much anyway though) when he's this overwhelmed.
Aurelius is typically disdainful of all mortals but especially men, Erastus was the one exception somehow when they met a few years ago and he was good company while they were in a low place, they're displeased to see him up here because it means he was brought up by one of the gods and considering the state they found him in, he wasn't in good shape.
Eventually while they're helping him get dressed he slowly speaks up, explaining what happened; they visibly scowl when he mentioned it was Zeus that brought him up, and Aurelius holds him while he shakes through the sobs.
From then on he's Zeus' consort and can be found lounging about Olympus here and there, but typically at his King's side - Zeus is especially gleeful whenever someone challenges him and picks Eras as an opponent because he's just a pretty consort, so that means he can watch his bunny cut someone down and be put in their place, at the same time however Zeus gets furious whenever anyone does manage to actually wound Erastus.
I feel so cringefail loserboy whenever I talk about this but in my version of these stories Zeus and Hera's marriage is little more than something on paper at this point, they're husband and wife for official "proper" events but it's an open secret that they're both fucking other people not even on the downlow, just out in front of the gods and everybody.
Eras and Zeus end up having a baby boy named Titus, he's a loud, bright ball of sunshine with an infectious toothless laugh that lights up the whole mountain when Zeus bounces him in his arms or Eras carries him off to nurse.
Around the same time, Poseidon was getting frustrated with how callous Zeus was with having and neglecting his children - there were favorites he obviously cared about sure, but the rest of them were just left to fend for themselves with the other parent. Posie talked to Hades about how he'd wish Zeus would just grow up already, but he'd eat his words about a week later.
Zeus woke up to Eras screaming in the middle of the night, on his knees by their son's crib.
Their boy was cold when Zeus picked him up, desperate to breathe life back into him and in his panic, had to watch Eras literally disappear as he lost physical form from grief and vanished into clouds.
Poseidon was the one Zeus went to in his agony, held him while he was wracked with sobs just like when they were kids except his baby brother was hurting so much more now. He'd yell and curse at the fates later for doing this, saying that they knew this wasn't what he meant, he never meant for something as cruel as this to happen.
They answer by saying that he wanted his brother to grow up and suffering was the best teacher, Zeus would go through the pain that his siblings spared him from as a kid by taking the brunt of Chronos' abuse.
Zeus and Hera get into a massive argument because he says she must be happy now that the people he loved are gone, she bites back by saying that she hated his little whore but she didn't want them both to die, especially not the child. They're formally divorced after this. After the initial agony settles Zeus is noticeably so much worse with fucking around and disappearing, anything to numb the misery he feels and fill the hole in his heart where his husband and son lived.
Eventually, Erastus gains physical form again as a nymph and wakes up in a clearing fully formed - his memories are fuzzy but he'll get them back as he reorients himself to--existing, basically; he's definitely no longer mortal though.
To take a slight detour, Pythocles is a forest nymph born from Persephone's tears on a tree stump that grew around him to produce a baby, Hermes found him when he was younger and turned him into a satyr for protection's sake. (Or for a laugh, who knows).
He hasn't much concept of how much long he's spent alone, only that he's grown up with just the flora and fauna to keep him company. His domain is lush with greenery but it's a sheer drop all around the relatively large island, it wasn't always like this but an earthquake split it up from a bigger mass of land when he was younger and he's been stuck here ever since.
Pytho's had potentially centuries to explore the place so he knows it like the back of his hand, anyone actually making it on there is a stroke of genuine luck, many have tried but few have succeeded. One group of sailors dropped anchor before the island split and since this was the first contact with other people Pythocles had, he was eager to entertain and find out more about them.
It ended up with them all succumbing to a fit of madness off the cliff after drinking themselves drunk - though Dionysus hadn't been born yet at this point - and young Pytho retreated into the forest in fear. Another group managed to scale the steep cliff but made the same mistake that Odysseus did and killed the immortal stag Pythocles knew since childhood, the only consolation he was given by another god (Hermes) in his solitude, he turned them all into trees as punishment.
A few more mortals manage to see this island throughout the years but they more or less meet similar fates.
Erastus wakes up in his forest, with Pythocles' inquisitive eyes looming over him, asking who he is and where he came from - Eras tells him his name but can't really bring other memories to surface at the moment, and says that he just woke up here. Pytho thinks it's weird but he's just happy to have someone here again, and this one doesn't seem like any of the mortals that have visited his island before.
They grow close to one another, Eras feels guilt and shame for "letting" Titus die so he doesn't actively seek Zeus out or call out to him because he assumes that he'd just go to one of his other many consorts Erastus doesn't hold himself in very high regard as we can see.
The few times he's tried, something or another has gotten in the way of his voice reaching Olympus be it from accidental interference by other gods, Zeus being too preoccupied with his "escapades" to hear it, or maybe just the wind carrying his words far, far away.
Days are simple and quiet on this island but he eventually falls in love with this whimsical little satyr and there's joy in domestic little life of their. They maybe have one or two kids, canonicity of this is flimsy at the moment.
When Zeus finally finds Eras again, he says he doesn't want to just be his gladiator or his consort anymore, and Erastus doesn't want to go back to Olympus just to warm his bed; if Aurelius and Persephone get to be his brother's wives, what makes him so different or unworthy :'[
Zeus and Hera have long since separated so that's not an outstanding issue but Zeus still lets his ego drive and leaves in a huff - the only reason why he doesn't start blasting a la God Games is because he woke up with a prophecy from Apollo saying that if he acted rashly or didn't actually listen to what Eras had to say he'd lose him for good. This prophecy is also how Zeus found out where Eras was.
Zeus heads back to Olympus and they don't see each other for a little bit but he's miserable and on the verge of pulling his hair out from being away from him and yearning and waiting for so long.
He's pacing around his room blaming the "stupid satyr" Eras chose to stay with instead of coming home with HIM but Zeus sees one of Eras' old robes and collapses in the privacy of his room because he misses him more than the sun itself.
How the hell did it get there in the first place Hermes is anyone's guess Hermes did it So the next day he comes back a lot more level headed and asks demands begs invites Eras to come back home as his husband.
Erastus agrees and all but throws himself into Zeus' arms, he spends his time mainly on Olympus with Zeus now with frequent visits to Pythocles' island to see his lover and children.
Zeus and Eras have a second son named Diokles, a little godling in charge of painting the clouds; however, around three months post-Diokles' birth, little Dionysus falls out of Zeus' thigh as a whole baby while they're cuddling in bed one night after a few weeks of Zeus complaining about soreness in his leg.
Both men are just as confused and have their flabbers equally ghasted, but Dio2—as Zeus affectionately refers to him at first—gets held, swaddled, and fawned over as soon as his fathers gather their bearings, coming to the conclusion that they don't love him any less, and he's put in the cot to sleep next to his older brother Diokles.
Erastus is a minor god of sun showers, morning dew, and another part of his duties is to give clouds in the sky their shape - if you think you see the form of something recognizable in there, it's probably him being bored and silly. When Diokles comes along he helps his father paint them, his favorites to do are storm clouds because the colors have much starker contrasts and that also means he gets to see papa's lightning bolts fly across the sky.
Eras' powers also give him the fun ability to shapeshift and change his form just like the clouds he molds. Though he could turn into other people, when he does this Eras much prefers animals so he can frolic around in peace; his go to choice is, of course, a silly rabbit. Zoomies, thumping, and binkies included.
Erastus' bunny form is where he stores the evils (sillies) because he may or may not be uncomfortable having "selfish" desires or asking for "too much" as a person; he can't even remember the mortal people who raised him clearly anymore but the horrors of growing up afab persist.
So perhaps being a cute bunny in Zeus' lap is a way to let him be doted on and spoiled and throw thumpy tantrums without feeling like he's being burdensome because he's literally just a little wabbet.

Odysseus gets to make it home, but something wicked this way comes.
Imperceptible at first, but stillbirths are slowly on the rise. Small children fall ill often and succumb to otherwise minor injuries so much easier; before anyone knows it, ten years have passed and not a single infant on Ithacan soil has been healthy.
His people beg the gods for a reprieve, their cries fall on deaf ears. After another five, the god they seek answers through the water, "Your King's crimes are whom you suffer for."
"Are you not the mortal who abandoned your own for 20 long years.
The man who left his wife encircled by a pack of frenzied wolves - while you blinded and mocked my son. The monster who dropped an infant from a tower as part of your bloody war. The mortal filled with enough hubris to attack my husband with his own weapon.
Why should I not strike you down as part of my duty where you stand, let alone grant your selfish wishes, Odysseus of Ithaca."

Aurelius technically first met Poseidon in a previous life, when they went by Arsinoe - it was when they were both young and kinder, more tender, meeting up under an olive tree to gaze at the stars and talk about constellations through oral tradition - with Poseidon pretending he didn't already know all these tales.
It didn't last because Arsinoe's poor family promised their hand in marriage to the kind of their land in exchange for their weight in gold.
Poseidon wanted to run away with them because what was a king to a god but Arsinoe naively believed that their family would let them go if they just explained the situation - they did not, Poseidon found out from Hera that his love was gone because Hades didn't have the heart to tell him that the person he talked about with so much adoration was in the underworld.
Eventually they were born again, Aristo, to another poor family, and they married quickly to take the burden off their parents - they weren't particularly happy in their marriage but out of duty to their family they grit their teeth and endured. They fulfilled the role the best they could and more or less succeeded so they wouldn't burden their family anymore but the one thing they couldn't do was provide their husband with children no matter how hard both of them tried, everything ended without conception at all or in miscarriages.
Their husband was understanding at first but over the years he started growing impatient and bitter, by the time they were able to conceive the situation at home wasn't safe enough to bring a kid into anymore so they spent the entire pregnancy praying this one turned out just like their others because death would be safer than being at the mercy of their husband.
It doesn't and they end up carrying it to term, Aristo had to have their baby in secret and just as it's born Thanatos appears to take it to the underworld, answering their prayers.
Aristo goes back to their village and tells the other wives it was another stillbirth, they let Aristo stay with them because predictably their husband didn't take the news well. Things were scary for a while but they had their support system so things got better, two years pass though and they've travelled as far as the entrance to the underworld.
Hera feels for them but killing family goes against her domain, so she sends Aphrodite down to turn them into a sea monster before they can throw themself into the river Styx from the pain, but Aphrodite also tells Aurelius that with this form no one will be able to hurt them like their husband again so it's a small consolation.
Aristo hangs around the shores near their home for a while because they don't have anywhere else to go but have to leave after someone from the village discovers them and freaks out because their a huge sea beast around. They get chased away but weirdly enough the seas never allow the villagers to follow them and several boats drown. It hurts to see their former friends look at them like a monster but Aristo doesn't blame them.
Several years later when Zeus and Hera get into a tiff about obligations and the work she has to do while he flounces around all day, Aristo on Zeus' whim gets turned into a god that protects the young under Hera's domain as some sort of cruel irony (Zeus is not aware of this).
Winding back time a little bit - Aristo would always come to the ocean to cry when things got particularly bad at home and Poseidon fell in love with them again from afar, their tears also turn into pearls once they fall in the water from Poseidon's influence.
He's pining bad for them and so familiar with their misery that whenever his pearl is crying the waters get rougher for everyone else around the area. His nickname in return is "Posie" because those were Arsinoe's favorite kinds of flowers.
But back to Aristo's apotheosis; they try to decline the position but Zeus being Zeus, is pushy, he's huge and imposing and even though they're a giant sea monster his presence is still massive.
Only a couple people notice Poseidon getting angrier in the background and then a few more because the waters in the fountains start to boil; the breaking point is when Zeus leans in real close and tips Aristo's chin up with one of his massive fingers, and says "don't you want to repent for those children you let die - this would be the perfect opportunity, no?"
Posie throws himself at Zeus in a blind rage and they get into a HUGE fight. Poseidon goes to Aurelius later at the little cove they've made into their lair to personally apologize for his brother, ladening them with such a heavy burden like godhood and being an ass about it the whole time too.
Aristo is wary, partially because he's a man and partially because their whole life they've known the gods to be fickle, unpredictable, and downright cruel if the winds blow in the wrong direction. They say that they don't mind, they figured the king of kings would be a little… like that (Posie snorts), but what they don't understand is why the god of the ocean would stick his neck out for a minor god like them. (Minor god isn't really accurate but they don't know that at this point)
Poseidon immediately gets all dodgy about the subject and he can feel Aphrodite's smug little grin burning itself into the back of his head so he makes up an excuse to leave early. He keeps coming to see them though, says it's to make sure they're getting settled nicely or keeping up with their job or anything really, if there's an excuse he can make to go see them Poseidon will.
They're getting to know each other in this new relationship but they're taking their time and Poseidon's being extra careful not to spook his pearl by coming on too strong even though by the gods he wants them so much- he wants them BAD, but they're a treasure worth waiting for so he's patient. Part of Aristo is testing him, to see if he'd turn out like their husband, but another part thinks it's cute how bashful he can get at times.
And after a way-too-long courting period that had Aphrodite pulling her hair out they finally got together, whole grown ass gods acting like scared and excited youths falling in love for the first time because that's what it felt like initially, but soon they settle into each other and it's a love nothing like this mortal has ever known.
Hell, just a few decades ago they were stuck in an abusive loveless marriage and now the god of the ocean manifests out of the tides to come kiss them if they so much as whisper that borderline saccharine nickname under their breath. After getting married they finally change their name to Aurelius, since Hades' wedding gift to the couple was gold from the earth and Aurelius adorns themself in the jewelry quite nicely.
It also comes out that the pearl tears are from Poseidon—if that wasn't obvious enough—he didn't do it on purpose, things just kind of shook out that way but he hoped that maybe they'd be able to escape if Aurelius collected enough of and sold them - it never crossed their mind, probably too embroiled in stress and turmoil to notice, but the sentiment endeared them to him all the same.
These are the golden years.
They have two children at first, Meris and Cordelia who were twins, but after an incident where Delia was tricked and forced to marry a mortal man who had Zeus' blessing (he didn't know it was Delia's hand being vied for) and Poseidon turned her into seafoam so she wouldn't have to live through that, Meris swam to the bottom of the ocean because he was furious that his father and uncle betrayed his sister by not protecting her on the formers part and then being an active participant on the latter; Zeus wouldn't have said yes to the blessing if he knew.
Eventually they find out that Aurelius is carrying Poseidon's clutch again and even though he's overjoyed, Aurelius is terrified from all their prior experiences as a mortal and the twins, convinced that this is going to end just as tragically and that their body even in this form is cursed to be a graveyard.
Poseidon does everything he can to comfort them, ease his pearl into it and that he'd be there for every step of the way, and if they really weren't ready for it they could leave the clutch in someone else's care after they were laid until Aurelius could come around to it. Aurelius agrees and Poseidon calls on two his most devoted followers, a couple who was having trouble conceiving, to protect his children with their lives until his pearl was ready and the couple obviously agreed.
A few decades of peace passed, the couple kept the eggs hidden as promised, Poseidon and Aurelius thrived in their relationship despite the worry, but things started going awry once the clutch began to hatch. Fish started going missing from nets and people grew suspicious; one of the guppies was the culprit, but the couple couldn't blame him for being hungry.
The townspeople eventually found the clutch and threw it in the fire even as the couple begged and pleaded with them not to hurt the eggs and that these were Poseidon's children, the fish thief (Skully) was netted while his siblings burned. None of them survived the fire except for one (Andy) whose piercing cries woke his parents up.
Aurelius got there first, furious and heartbroken - they drowned the entire port town and the hatred they had for mortals was set in stone from that day on.
When they didn't know if Andy was going to make it Apollo came down with a prophecy that if they put him to sleep in a magic clam he wouldn't go back to as he was before, but he'd make a mostly full recovery with the stipulation that it would take a hundred years before he emerges. They let Skully join his brother to keep Andy company because he wouldn't leave him otherwise and closed the shell.
Aurelius and Poseidon had a massive fight in the fallout, both still hurting and saying things they didn't mean and separated after that, so Aurelius spent their time near the clam whenever they could and if not they were rotting in their lair, catatonic from the loss.
Birthrates plummeted especially in seaside towns and the ocean was impossible for mortals to cross for a good while, the babies that were born were very sickly and in worse cases turned into (smaller) sea monsters like merfolk and were actively hostile to humans. Sometimes they'd return to mortal form if their parents raised them with enough love and care, other times the parents were killed or the kid found its way into the ocean first.
It got to the point where Zeus had to put his foot down because the divorcees and their "depressions" (Zeus' air quotes) were throwing the balance of nature out of whack.
Zeus and Poseidon got into another huge fight over the younger brother being the typical pompous insensitive bastard he was, but after Zeus told him to "just have more kids" in front of his grieving partner Posie damn near ripped his face off.
Hera went to talk to Aurelius in their lair to try and coax them out, said that she knows they're in there because gods can't die that easily, the response she gets is that Aurelius wishes this broken heart would hurry up and kill them already. Hera offers a little consolation, she can't get rid of their pain completely but she can lock away their fertility, ease the burden of having to worry about that all the time.
Aurelius agrees, they're a lot colder after this - feeling it necessary for them to kill their sentimentality if they were going to continue working. Poseidon mourned, said that they took the warmth from them but all Aurelius has to say to that was that their heart died with the clutch Secretly though, they'd continue to visit the clam and fill the the hidden underwater clearing with pearls until they emerged
It's their job to preside over every birth, so when Poseidon's bastard children start being born, Aurelius is miserable and believes he's just doing this to hurt them. Poseidon isn't really but what he is doing is trying to fill the void they and those guppies left behind (it doesn't work, just hurts both of them because he feels awful after every one). Anteros curses him to feel the pain of every teardrop they cry that hits the water in his ribs, a reminder close to his heart.
Aurelius' work puts them in close proximity with Thanatos a lot, one side arguing for an infant's life and the other for a peaceful passage to the underworld. Thanatos appeared a lot around the clam while they guarded it and they fought him time and time again for their guppies' lives, verbally or physically. He always leaves but tells Aurelius that he'll be back (he always is, and they're there to tell him to fuck off again). Thanatos appears one last time after it's been a hundred years to reap what Aurelius sowed, but the clam opens and they tell him that he can't have them because they're alive.
Aurelius ends up raising Andy and Skully in tandem with a harpy and a tigerfish mer (oomf's OCs) though, because they decide it's too dangerous around them all the time and really they're still in a lot of pain. They in the periphery of the guppies' lives as the sea monster that lives nearby but Andy and Skully also consider Florence and Alba their moms.
After Aurelius started using a more palatable mortal form to see the people who called for their help, since one of their followers mentioned that they were quite scary and even if Aurelius reprimanded them by saying their job isn't always kind or easy, they agreed, occasionally there'd be sightings from other people.
Aurelius isn't really a major god so they travel mostly through the ocean to get somewhere and transform on land - when they need to go they jump back into the sea.
One village in particular was having fertility issues so Aurelius had to visit multiple times over the course of a few years, a man falls in love with their mortal form but obviously can only see them when they visit. The elders warned him that Aurelius is the god that protects their young and if he does anything to anger the gods everyone will be in grave danger. Stories passed down from the clutch incident held up even throughout the decades.
This guy keeps it in mind but continues watching them from afar and once gets his friends in on it because they don't believe him; Aurelius shows up drop dead gorgeous, they believe him. Him and his friends also follow Aurelius a little further than the man would usually go around the outskirts of the village to the ocean and eventually see them change back into their sea monster form.
In true Greek mythos fashion they get freaked out and jump to the conclusion that this isn't a god it's a monster tricking the people of their village and it's Up To Them™️ to put a stop to it.
Aurelius gets ambushed in mortal form but when the mob cut them open and gold spills onto the grass they realized the monumental fuckup they've committed. It's in Auriseidon's divorce era during the 100 years of waiting and far away enough from the ocean for Poseidon not to know but Hera is furious and curses the village for harming the god sent to help them. It's a close call but Hermes is ordered to bring them to Olympus to replenish.
Poseidon came home seeing the trail of ichor assuming it was Ares again but he heard the servants talking and hauled ass to his pearl like a maniac. Aurelius turns away just as he flings the doors open because they recognize his footsteps and he's too focused on the everything to see Aphrodite's mirror.
Posie can't see his pearl's face when he asks why they didn't call for him and they respond that they didn't think he'd care enough, but Aurelius still sees his expression through it and it kills them. His response is pleading them that he does care, he never STOPPED caring but Aurelius tells him to stop lying to them and he must think them a fool, they were there for all his bastard children for their domain after all.
They tell Poseidon to go guard their what's left of their clutch against Thanatos if he actually wants to be helpful and Aphrodite chases him out. Says that Aurelius is in enough pain without him here making it worse, so he does and his ribs hurt the whole time.
Once they've healed up a little more, Poseidon visits their lair with little gifts and leaves them outside so he doesn't bother them too much; he makes jewelry out of the pearls that they cry because he misses them, his earrings included - if you actually stepped into their lair the bottom of it underwater is FULL of pearls.
Aurelius comes out once and tells him to stop leaving clutter around and they get into another argument, but instead of blowing up at each other and fucking off like always they get in each other's faces and start making out with all the desperation and repression that what, 70 years apart would afford a god.
Halfway through though Aurelius pulls away and asks him to stop, because they can't handle his tenderness and "I love you"s because they hurt more than anything because they feel like lies revolt them hearing it from him, so Poseidon's mean and rough instead.
His ribs burn but it gives his pearl an outlet to cry without guilt - Aphrodite told them about Anteros' curse at some point to gloat while they were having a little gossip sesh but instead of laughing with her Aurelius looked betrayed and disgusted and hurt when they asked if she really made them haunt Poseidon all this time - so their hatefucking arc starts.
It goes on for years because both of them are traumatized and incredibly maladaptive and can't just talk it out like (trust that Aphro IS pulling her hair out as Aurelius' bestie) but eventually the hatred dies down, they're more or less together without actually being together but neither wants to be the one to say it.
In the middle of this, their son from the clam Andreas gets tricked into giving mortals Ambrosia so he's put on trial for stealing from the gods, it's a whole thing with the gods arguing for unreasonable punishments, no punishments at all, everything in between, and Apollo nearly gets his hand bitten off for making Andy cry but eventually Andy's sentenced to serve wine to the gods on Olympus with Hebe (since he's just 8 after all) instead of much harsher ones proposed by other gods.
After the dust has settled Aurelius and Poseidon have another one of their "hatefuck" meetings even though realistically there's no actual venom between them, things go as normal but in the afterglow this time while they let Posie hold them for once, back to him, Aurelius tells him that they miss what they had. He breaks down then and there and Aurelius joins him shortly after, mourning all the pain they both suffered and how much they missed each other and regretting how they treated one another. Divorce arc over everybody they're back together now and slowly mending the relationship and 100% are going to be SO much more possessive over each other and worse yaaaayyyy 🥳🎉🎊
Additionally, the domain bestowed on Aurelius initially was just Protection of the Young, but through the years - the soaring highs and crushing lows, their sorrows and their joys - their domain changes into being the God of Protection as a whole.
God of protection but notoriously tempestuous. God of protection but fickle and a trickster. God of protection who hates mortals so to directly ask for their help means the monkey's paw curls. Aurelius' domain is incredibly powerful but devotees and people who worshipped them regularly know they have to follow their God's instructions to the letter, or they'll bring destruction upon themselves that's just as devastating in scale.
Soldiers often seek their intervention before going to war but Aurelius meets their pleas with silence or outright anger at the audacity for them to ask for protection while these men carry out their violence; they do, however, still answer to the meek and vulnerable more often than not.
Aurelius says they were transformed by their hatred so now they have to shoulder the heavy burden of power, but Aphrodite leans her head on their shoulder and reminds her dear friend that love is one of the most powerful forces in the universe.

Did u ever write/draw sweetness and seafood first meeting?
SWEETNESS ADN SEAFOOD I'M SCREAMIGNSKFDJSDGH
It isn't their first meeting but I did draw a comic of them early on/pre relationship in the pining stage! Linked here :D
Aureseidon technically have a few "first" meetings;
When Poseidon met Aurelius' previous incarnation, Arsinoe, and starting their first (painfully short) relationship together
Poseidon finding Aurelius crying by the ocean in their mortal life but not wanting to intrude even though he really wanted to be with the love of his life again, so he just watches them from afar
Poseidon meeting Aurelius again - after they'd been turned into a sea monster - during their ascension to a godly domain and getting into a fistfight with Zeus for "hurting" his pearl (Zeus had no idea about Aurelius' previous struggles)
The unfortunate answer is that I haven't drawn any of these yet but I did get to yap about Aureseidon on here a little so thank you for the question!

Announcement below ‼️ reblogs highly appreciated ;w;b
Hey y'all so uh!! As some of you might know my old laptop has been causing me a lot of problem over the years and this month it's finally gotten to the point where I definitely need to replace it 🙏
For now it's not unusable but definitely overheats a lot in this weather and nothing I've tried helps, this rinky-dink old thing for as many problems as it causes me is the only way I can make money through art commissions so having a useable one is kind of important T_T
Even if you can't afford to get something right now I do have a ko-fi for smaller donations and rbs/shares are totally invaluable rn!! Plus it never hurts to have more money for food ;w; Thank you if you've read this far and have a nice day! <3
