These are the five keys to winning the Home Run Derby
The time has come for giants to launch baseballs into the night sky. Major League Baseball’s Home Run Derby arrives Monday evening at Nationals Park as a leather-smashing appetizer for the 89th All-Star Game on Tuesday.
The Derby since 2015 features eight players each with four minutes to hit as many home runs as possible. They all get a 30-second timeout during the round to catch their breath. When to take that timeout is up to the hitter.
That format has changed the calculus for Derby participants. Over the three years of the new format, the number of long balls required to win the event has varied widely. Todd Frazier needed only 39 in 2015. Giancarlo Stanton bashed 61 in 2016 and Aaron Judge hit 47 last year.
But more consistent results have come from the college ranks, which use the same format. Twenty homers per four-minute round is usually enough to win the bracket-style event. Air Force first baseman Nic Ready hit 21 in the final round to hold off Clemson’s switch hitting shortstop Logan Davidson for the 2018 title.
We asked both Ready and Davidson the keys to mashing taters in a televised competitive batting practice. They pointed out five keys to success.
Conditioning
You better be in really good shape if you want to compete in this kind of event.
For Ready, taking some vigorous rounds of batting practice at elevation — the Air Force Academy is 7,258 feet above sea level — was enough to stay in shape, but just to be sure, he limited his rest between four-minute practice rounds to only a couple minutes. Hitters normally rest for closer to 15 minutes after strenuous sessions in the cage.
But muscle soreness, even after one or two rounds, is the larger hurdle, both Ready and Davidson said. The pair averaged about 120 swings per round. The next day, sometimes even after the round, both hitters could feel it, and Major Leaguers on Monday night likely will, too.
“The hands and forearms and legs were a lot more tired the more rounds you went,” Davidson said. “I guess adrenaline will only take you so far.”
Swing
That’s why swing is so important. Hitters who qualify for the Derby are strong enough and skilled enough with a bat to go yard from any part of the strike zone. Players call it “muscling a ball” out of the park. It involves taking a heavier swing and launching at the ball more with your arms rather than letting momentum from your legs carry the bat.
Ready and Davidson both said they tried not to muscle balls out in the Derby. Instead, they wanted to take easy, balanced swings that are just as powerful and less taxing.
“We could rush or try to muscle balls and the end of rounds get like that a little bit, but taking a nice smooth swing and really catching it, that’s going to be the difference between hitting two or three more home runs,” Ready said.
Multiple “muscled” swings quickly sap energy away from hitters and can even throw a batter out of his usual form. Derby participants, Ready and Davidson said, should consider the whole four-minute round when taking swings and try to preserve energy accordingly. “Muscling” a ball just isn’t worth it.
The pitcher
Hitters can pick their own pitchers for the Derby, and a considerable amount of preparation goes into coordination between the two.
Davidson took most of his swings from the left side of the plate, while Ready batted right-handed. Both wanted the ball pretty much in the same spot: belt-high on the inner half of the plate. That way, if the pitcher missed a spot, he’d be more likely to miss out over the plate and into a zone where Davidson and Ready could hit with power.
Practice rounds are just as important to pitchers to learn their batter’s hot spots as they are for batters to work on a home run swing.
“If you can’t get in a rhythm with that guy, it’s going to be a tough day,” Ready said. “A lot of your success is in the hands of your thrower.”
Pace
The tempo at which pitchers deliver the next ball is just as crucial as location. Pitchers aren’t allowed to deliver the next pitch until the last batted ball has landed.
But offer the next pitch too soon and a batter might not be ready in the box, or the fast pace might tire a hitter out. Throw the next pitch too late, and a batter won’t have as many opportunities to go deep as his competitors.
Ready wanted his pitcher to deliver pitches as quickly as possible. He relied on his conditioning to not get fatigued during the round and valued that constant pace to establish a rhythm.
“You want to be almost mid-windup as that ball hits the ground,” Ready said.
Davidson was more wary of pace. He and his pitcher started at a brisk clip, but as the rounds wore on, Davidson asked his pitcher to tamp down the velocity of each pitch. That gave Davidson more time to size up each ball on the way to the plate and an extra beat to relax and catch his breath in the box.
Timeout
The timeout for both Ready and Davidson was the Derby’s game-changer, and likely will be for the pros Monday night, as well.
Ready went three minutes into each round before taking his timeout. He attributed his winning strategy to resting up and then pummeling the ball in the final minute of each round.
“We just wanted to finish strong with a minute knowing we could get a good six, seven out in a good minute,” Ready said.
That might have been a little ambitious. He averaged a still not-too-shabby five home runs per minute.
Davidson planned to take his timeout when he started feeling tired during his round. He came out batting right-handed but could tell early on he wasn’t lifting the ball well from that side of the plate. So he took an early timeout and switched to the left side of the plate. He smacked 40 dingers in the next two rounds.
The timeout doesn’t have to be all about conditioning, Davidson cautioned. Sometimes it’s worth taking time to evaluate your round and try something different.
“The timeout is definitely a feel thing. It really comes down to when you get tired and how you’re hitting at the time when you’re tired,” he said. “If you’re tired and you’re still hitting home runs, you’re not going to take the timeout.”
Those five factors, both hitters said, are likely to decide Major League Baseball’s next home run king. The Derby begins at 8 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN.

These are the Amazon Prime Day UK deals that are actually good
You know the drill. Amazon really wants you to sign up to Amazon Prime, so it invented a whole day (it's 36 hours now) of incredible deals to lure you in. But not all the deals are incredible and there's really quite a lot of them, so we've cast our expert eyes over the possibilities to save you the trouble.
Unlike other lists you'll find today, we've actually checked the price against other retailers, plus these are all things we'd buy ourselves. The best deals are at the top, but the ones are at the bottom are still good.
You'll need an Amazon Prime subscription to get these deals – you can click here to get one. Full disclosure: if you clicked on that link, we earned a small commission, and that's true for all the links on this page. You can of course also search for the products on Amazon yourself.
Sennheiser wireless headphones with noise cancelling for £90
What is it? Sennheiser is a renowned and reliable audio brand and the HD 4.50 headphones are its attempt to create an affordable set of wireless, noise cancelling headphones. They have a 19-hour battery life and normally cost £150.
How much are you saving? At just £90, you're getting these headphones at half price. And, to our minds, £90 for wireless, noise-cancelling headphones from a proper audio brand is an absolute steal. Reviews are largely positive, too.

Two UE Wonderboom Bluetooth speakers for £79
What is it? A pair of dinky waterproof Bluetooth speakers from Ultimate Ears, which is owned by Logitech. They're totally waterproof (they actually float in water), making them perfect for the pool, the beach or shower karaoke. They last 10 hours between charges and can be paired together to play the same music like a multi-room speaker system. They're also featured in our best Bluetooth speaker guide.
How much are you saving? They normally cost £60 each, so two for £80 is a saving of £40 overall. You could spend more and still only get one much worse Bluetooth speaker. It's a winner.

Microsoft Surface Pro 12.3-inch with Type Cover (i5, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD) for £749
What is it? Microsoft's two-in-one tablet with an excellent spec of an Intel i5-7300U, 8GB RAM and a 128GB SSD. A type cover keyboard is included, too. The Surface Pro is a fantastic tablet and laptop replacement, and the best Windows tablet in our best tablets guide.
How much are you saving? Not as much Amazon claims, but it's still a great deal. The next best price is £979 from Currys, which means you're saving £230 in this deal. If you need a product like this, it's a no-brainer.

B&O Play Beoplay H4 Wireless Headphones for £114
What is it? Wireless headphones, obviously. Keep up. The H4 Wireless don't quite make our list of the best wireless headphones, but they normally cost more and the competition is fierce. B&O Play is a top-notch audio brand and these headphones look great and sound decent, too. They last 19 hours on a charge, but don't feature noise cancelling.
How much are you saving? A whopping £95: they're practically half price. John Lewis sells them for £218 right now, so this is an outstanding deal. Grab them while they last as we're sure they'll disappear quickly.

200GB SanDisk Ultra microSDXC card with A1 App Performance for £38
What is it? A massive 200GB microSD card that's perfect for popping into your phone. What makes this one really good is its A1 App Performance rating. This means you can run apps saved on this card on your phone without any performance issues. It comes with an adaptor for standard SD card slots as well.
How much are you saving? You save £25 off the current price on Amazon, around 40%. A decent chunk of change for something that's not hugely expensive anyway.

Garmin GPS running watch for £109
What is it? In our recent guide to the best running watches, we chose the Garmin Forerunner 35 as the best cheap option. This GPS watch is a great starting point for any runner, with good GPS tracking, built-in heart-rate tracking and support for external monitoring as well.
How much are you saving? The real saving is £20 as we found this model for £129 elsewhere, less than the £169 Amazon was selling the watch before Prime Day. This isn't a huge saving, but we reckon the Forerunner 35 was already good value at £169, so it's superb value at £109.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite for £74.99
What is it? The Paperwhite is the best e-reader you can buy. There are more advanced models with waterproofing and other extras, but the back-lit Paperwhite is all the Kindle you really need.
How much are you saving? A decent £35 off the usual £109.99 asking price. The basic Kindle, which doesn't have a backlight, is £60.

Logitech Harmony Elite Remote and Hub for £129
What is it? The ultimate addition to any smart home setup, the Harmony Elite is a universal remote for all your AV gear. It supports Alexa and works with other popular smart home devices, like Philips Hue lighting, so you can say "Watch a movie" and the Harmony will switch on your TV, speakers and change your lighting.
How much are you saving? We haven't found anywhere selling it for less than £189, so it's a decent £60 saving.

Philips Hue Twin Pack with Bridge for £79.99
What is it? This is a neat starter pack for Philips Hue, the market leading smart lighting system. It supports Alexa and Apple HomeKit. This kit comes with two E27 white and colour bulbs.
How much are you saving? This is an outstanding deal. You're saving £55 on the normal price, but you're effectively getting the bridge hub for free given two colour Hue bulbs normally go for around £85 from Argos, John Lewis and other retailers.
Click here to save £55 on Philips Hue Twin Pack with Bridge
Amazon Fire HD 8 Kits Edition Tablet for £90
What is it? An 8-inch tablet designed specifically for kids. It has a rubber shell that's easy to grip and protects the tablet from knocks and drops. There are 5,000 age-appropriate apps, games and videos, and excellent parental controls for limiting time spent online. It's our best tablets for kids right now.
How much are you saving? The Prime Day deal is £90, a £40 saving on the usual £130 price. This means it costs less than the smaller, less powerful Fire 7 Kids Edition tablet normally costs. Incidentally, the Fire 7 Kid Edition is also on sale for £60, down from £100. We'd recommend going for the Fire HD 8 if you can, though.
Click here to save £40 on the Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Edition
Sony PlayStation 4 Pro for £299
What is it? The more powerful 'Pro' version of the PlayStation adds support for 4K and enhanced graphics for most new games and a large number of older ones as well. It's a worthwhile upgrade if you've recently invested in a 4K TV.
How much are you saving? You'll save £50 on the usual £350 retail price. It's not a huge saving, but the PS4 Pro is rarely discounted without a bunch of games you probably don't want, so you won't find it for less any time soon.
Click here to save £50 on the Sony PlayStation 4 Pro
Beats Solo3 Wireless Headphones for £150
What is it? These wireless on-ear headphones from Beats need little introduction. They're not the last word in sound quality, but they last 40 hours on a full charge, look great and have the Apple W1 wireless chip for easier pairing between Apple devices.
Echo Spot review: Amazon's smart speaker is perfect for the bedroom
7/10
By MATT BURGESS
How much are you saving? At £150, it's a £53 saving on Amazon's usual price. Apple, meanwhile, sells these headphones for £249.

Dell XPS 15 laptop (i5, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD, Nvidia 1050 graphics) for £960

Chloe Bennet Explains Why She's Dating Controversial YouTuber Logan Paul
Chloe Bennet Explains Why She's Dating
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. actress Chloe Bennet confirmed Wednesday that she's dating controversial YouTuber Logan Paul. Paul, 23, faced backlash earlier this year after one of his videos featured the body of an apparent suicide victim in a Japanese forest. YouTube subsequently dropped him from the upcoming YouTube Red series Foursome and Google Preferred, a branding liason program, severed ties with the YouTuber. (YouTube later also prevented advertisers from using space on Paul's videos, effectively preventing Paul from making money from them.) He later staged a sort-of comeback, and is now happily making videos again.
The internet remembers, though, like a meme-obsessed elephant, and one of Bennet's fans questioned Bennet's actions when she appeared in an Instagram story kissing Paul.
Bennet replied, "Cause he’s kind, creative, funny, vibrantly curious about life, weird as fuck in all the best ways, a big dork, and he’s one of my best friends. It doesn’t make sense to a lot of people, but it doesn’t have too . He’s changed my life for the better and I’ve done the same for him."
"Hey @chloebennet I’m seeing rumors you are dating l*gan p*ul? just wondering why you would do that?" the user asked. (The asteriks are a way of preventing Paul's name from coming up in a Twitter search.)
Refinery29 has reached out to representation for both Paul and Bennet for further comment.
Paul later added his own two cents, joking on Twitter that he hadn't confirmed anything about their relationship. "Hold on one second now," he wrote. "I haven’t confirmed anything. but. if i had the chance to date this so called 'Chloe' girl, i would be an extremely lucky young man."
If you or someone you know is considering self-harm, please get help. Call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.

It’s 7-Eleven Day and that means free Slurpees, $1 hot dogs
It’s 7-Eleven Day
An ice-cold Slurpee from 7-Eleven is a great way to cool down on a hot day in Sacramento, especially when that Slurpee is free.
To mark its 91st birthday, the chain is giving away small Slurpees Wednesday, July 11 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. This includes the featured Cap'n Crunch's Crunch Berries limited-time flavor.
“Free Slurpee day may be the most anticipated day of the year for millions of 7‑Eleven customers and new customers alike,” said Raj Kapoor, 7‑Eleven senior vice president for fresh food and proprietary beverages in a press release. “7‑Eleven Day is a celebration, not only of our birthday, but more importantly, of our customers."

18th over: IND 122/1 (Sharma 45* Kohli 36*)
Ben Stokes returns well...initially. A slower ball deceives Kohli, who is almost caught at cover. India run one for that, and get another to third man via Sharma.
Kohli then strikes through extra cover deliciously, drawing a scream of anguish from Stokes. A short ball is pulled for two and India have added eight. An ominous eight. Drinks now.
17th over: IND 114/1 (Sharma 44* Kohli 29*)
Sharma punches one, Kohli cuts two. After that, Rashid keeps his composure. Kohli is almost bowled via a ricochet off his body and two more dots foreshadow a single from Kohli to finish.
16th over: IND 110/1 (Sharma 43* Kohli 26*)
A quiet over, consisting of two singles. Until Kohli flips Plunkett's last around the corner to fine leg for four. Lovely touch. He is moving through the gears serenely.
15th over: IND 104/1 (Sharma 42* Kohli 21*)
More frustration for England. Again, India add two off the first five balls of Rashid's over. Again, a boundary crops up off the final delivery. On this occasion, it belongs to Sharma, who sweeps powerfully.
14th over: IND 98/1 (Sharma 37* Kohli 20*)
Two singles to Sharma, a single and a two to Kohli. All of the runs come through the leg-side. Kohli's two comes from a gorgeous shot.
Standing tall, he whips Plunkett through straight mid-wicket for a couple.
13th over: IND 93/1 (Sharma 35* Kohli 17*)
Frustrating for England. Rashid keeps it tight, restricting India to just two singles until the final ball.
Then, with Kohli on strike, he drags one down. Kohli slashes past backward point and to the boundary.
Match action
This is a great shot depicting how Dhawan lost his shape while losing his wicket.
12th over: IND 87/1 (Sharma 34* Kohli 12*)
Plunkett's encouraging start continues, but Kohli is so assertive. After Sharma's single, the India captain works two and then another single.
Here comes Adil Rashid. England need something drastic.
11th over: IND 83/1 (Sharma 33* Kohli 9*)
Ben Stokes now, and India's progress does not abate. Sharma works one, Kohli responds in turn and then Sharma dismisses a half-volley outside off-stump. He moves into the thirties.
Sharma adds a single and Kohli scampers two on the final ball. Nine off the over and no breaking sweat.
10th over: IND 74/1 (Sharma 27* Kohli 6*)
Liam Plunkett has a go now and he keeps things tight to end the first powerplay. Just a single each for India's batsmen.
9th over: IND 72/1 (Sharma 26* Kohli 5*)
Three boundaries in the over and this game is slipping away from England very sharply. The first one goes to Kohli, who caresses through the covers off the front foot.
The next two, following a Kohli single to third man, come from Sharma's bat. Both are muscular back-foot shots to the cover fence.
8th over: IND 59/1 (Sharma 18* Kohli 0*)
Virat Kohli's here. He doesn't mind a run chase. Meanwhile, Dhawan is already on the Trent Bridge balcony. He'll be feeling disgusted, I imagine.
Dhawan c Rashid b Ali 40Out of nowhere. Sharma and Dhawan traded singles again, before the latter swept powerfully for four.
Then the left-hander chucks away his wicket. He skipped down the track but got nowhere near the pitch. Dhawan followed through but skewed horribly and ballooned the ball to Rashid at short third man FOW: IND 59/1
7th over: IND 53/0 (Sharma 17* Dhawan 35*)
Wood continues. Sharma and Dhawan trade leg-side singles off the first two deliveries. Then, ping!
Sharma just lifts an 88mph delivery for six over mid-off. That looked so easy. Jason Roy looks like he might have had enough.
6th over: IND 45/0 (Sharma 10* Dhawan 34*)
"A risk-free eight from the over" says Michael Atherton on Sky Sports' commentary. "An ominous eight" adds David Lloyd. India's openers worked four singles between them off Ali's bowling, with a boundary also coming when Sharma stepped back to carve the off-spinner through the covers.
5th over: IND 37/0 (Sharma 4* Dhawan 32*)
Lovely stuff from Dhawan. He's quickly back on his toes to tickle Wood fine down the leg-side for his fifth boundary. Three balls later, he drives through straight mid-on. It was aerial, but flew past Wood rapidly.
Dhawan pulls fine for four more and then milks the strike with a push to mid-wicket. India are flying. Eoin Morgan is enlisting Moeen Ali to try to halt them.
4th over: IND 24/0 (Sharma 4* Dhawan 19*)
Shikhar Dhawan wants to get out of Trent Bridge. He drills Willey to mid-off and then whips another four through straight mid-wicket.
To his credit, Willey does come back well. There is only a quick single off the final ball of the over.
3rd over: IND 19/0 (Sharma 4* Dhawan 14*)
Wood joins three dots before getting slashed down to third man by Sharma, who takes a single. A short, leg-side ball then brushes Dhawan's arm guard on the way through to Buttler and there is a half-hearted appeal from England.
A similar delivery misses everything, bringing India a wide. Dhawan drops the extra ball into the off-side and India add one.
2nd over: IND 16/0 (Sharma 3* Dhawan 13*)
Willey is on the money straightaway, jagging one back into Sharma's pads via an inside edge. He then gets slightly too straight, allowing Sharma to get off strike with a prod.
Unfortunately for England, Willey does not adjust his line for the next two balls and Dhawan goes to work with back-to-back boundaries through extra cover. There was slightly more bottom hand in the first one...
...while the second was a high-elbowed punch.
Dhawan leaves the penultimate delivery but then flicks his third four through square leg. That was crisp, and beats a diving Ben Stokes on the boundary.
1st over: IND 3/0 (Sharma 2* Dhawan 1*)
Wow! Wood starts with an absolute snorter that squares up Sharma comprehensively. What a delivery. It just misses the top of off and goes through to Jos Buttler. Sharma is off the mark next ball, stealing a single behind point.
Dhawan prods his first ball back to Wood and then nudges one to square leg.
Oof! Wood then beats Sharma again before Sharma works a leg-side single. Three off the first but some encouragement for England. Here comes David Willey.
England take the field...
...followed by India's openers, Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan. Can the hosts defend this? It'd be an excellent coup if they do.Mark Wood is opening up and Eoin Morgan has set two slips. He knows England need wickets.

Cardi B and Offset Welcome Daughter Kulture Kiari
Cardi B is making mommy moves!
The 25-year-old rapper (whose real name is Belcalis Almanzar) and husband Offset of Migos welcomed their first child together, daughter Kulture Kiari Cephus, on Tuesday, July 10, Cardi B announced on Instagram Wednesday alongside a nude maternity photo.
The birth of their daughter comes two weeks after the new mom confirmed that she and Offset, 26, secretly tied the knot this past September. “Well now since you lil f—s know at least ya can stop saying I had a baby out of wedlock,” Cardi B tweeted on June 25.
The baby girl is the first child for Cardi B and the fourth for Offset (birth name Kiari Cephus), who has three children from previous relationships.

After months of speculation, Cardi B confirmed her pregnancy on Saturday Night Live in April when she proudly debuted her baby bump during the second performance as musical guest.
Cardi B had dropped a hint that her baby on the way would be a little girl while catching up with The New York Times ahead of the Met Gala, where she repeatedly referred to the new addition as “she.”
In May, the “Bodak Yellow” hit-maker came clean about the sex of her baby on the way on SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show after host Howard Sternasked her directly, “Do you know what you’re having … what are you having?” “Yes. I’m having a girl,” Cardi B replied.

In her interview with The Breakfast Club, Cardi B also admitted it “disgusts” her that people have reached out to her online to more or less tell her that motherhood will ruin her professional success.
“It just really bothers me and it disgusts me because I see a lot of women online like, ‘Oh I feel sorry for you, oh your career is over,’ ” she said. “As a woman, why can’t I have both? Why do I gotta choose a career or a baby? Like, why can’t I have both? I want both.”
The rapper admitted she “kinda, sorta” considered terminating her pregnancy for a short time, “But then I didn’t want to deal with the whole abortion thing. I just didn’t want to.”
“And it’s just like, ‘You know what? I’m a grown woman. I’m 25 years old. I’m gonna say this in the most humblest way … I’m a schmillionaire, you know what I’m saying? And I’m prepared for this.’ ”
During a May appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the Invasion of Privacy rapper revealed that Offset had already come up with the perfect moniker for their new addition. “My dude named the baby,” she said. “I really like the name.”
She also joked that the sexy moves she broke out for her Coachella performance were responsible for the pregnancy. “I was just trying to show the world how I got pregnant in the first place,” the star said about clips of herself twerking and dancing on the ground at the festival, adding about one pose, “Like that, that’s how it happened. That’s where I that day.”
In April, Cardi B confirmed she knew exactly when her baby was conceived while talking to Power 105.1’s show The Breakfast Club. “No, it wasn’t planned. It was just one night … it was a good night … that one night, it had to be that night,” she said.

At one point in the video, a large cloud of smoke can be seen traveling from Offset to in front of where Cardi B was standing.

O presidente Florentino respeitou a vontade do atleta e decidiu facilitar a negociação.

Trump pardons ranchers in case that inspired 2016 occupation of national wildlife refuge in Oregon
President Trump pardons two ranchers whose case sparked the armed occupation of a national wildlife refuge in Oregon.
Dwight and Steven Hammond were convicted in 2012 of intentionally and maliciously setting fires on public lands. The arson crime carried a minimum prison sentence of five years, but a sympathetic federal judge, on his last day before retirement, decided the penalty was too stiff and gave the father and son much lighter prison terms.
Prosecutors won an appeal and the Hammonds were resentenced in October 2015 to serve the mandatory minimum.
The decision sparked a protest from Ammon Bundy and dozens of others, who occupied the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge near the Hammond ranch in southeastern Oregon from Jan. 2 to Feb. 11, 2016, complaining the Hammonds were victims of federal overreach.
The armed occupiers changed the refuge's name to the Harney County Resource Center, reflecting their belief that the federal government has only a very limited right to own property within a state's borders.
Bundy was arrested during a Jan. 26 traffic stop, effectively ending the protest. Another key occupier, Robert "LaVoy" Finicum, was fatally shot that day by Oregon State Police.
In a statement Tuesday, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders called that decision to resentence the Hammonds "unjust."
"The Hammonds are devoted family men, respected contributors to their local community, and have widespread support from their neighbors, local law enforcement, and farmers and ranchers across the West," she said. "Justice is overdue for Dwight and Steven Hammond, both of whom are entirely deserving of these Grants of Executive Clemency."The pardons are the latest in a growing list of clemency actions by Trump, who has been using his pardon power with increasingly frequency in recent months.
Trump has been especially pleased with news coverage of his actions, which included commuting the sentence of Alice Johnson, a woman serving a life sentence for drug offenses whose case had been championed by reality television star Kim Kardashian West.
He has repeatedly referenced emotional video of Johnson being freed from prison and running into her family members' arms, and has said he's considering thousands more cases — both famous and not.
But critics say the president could be ignoring valid claims for clemency as he works outside the typical pardon process, focusing on cases brought to his attention by friends, famous people and conservative media pundits.
Aides say that Trump has been especially drawn to cases in which he believes the prosecution may have been politically motivated — a situation that may remind him of his own position at the center of the ongoing special counsel investigation into Russian election meddling.
Many have also seen the president as sending a signal with his pardons to former aides and associates caught up in the probe, or lashing out at enemies like former FBI Director James Comey, who oversaw the prosecution of lifestyle guru Martha Stewart, whom Trump has said he is thinking of pardoning.

qualifier Gulbis tops fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev again Once top-10
Alexander Zverev
LONDON (AP) – Ernests Gulbis is a former top-10 player and Grand Slam semifinalist. A series of injuries pushed him down the rankings and kept him off the ATP Tour for long stretches, instead relegated to lower-tier Challenger tournaments.
The 29-year-old Gulbis is ranked only 138th and had to go through qualifying rounds to make it into Wimbledon’s main draw. He’d never attempted that before and is now the first male qualifier to get to the fourth round in six years.
Look at him now. Healthy and playing well, he’s made it all the way to Wimbledon’s fourth round for the first time in 11 appearances at the All England Club after upsetting fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev 7-6 (2), 4-6, 5-7, 6-3, 6-0 on Saturday.
“I’m glad that I went through it,” Gulbis said. “It makes me stronger mentally.”
The victory over Zverev was his sixth in a row over the past two weeks.
“It’s great to see him doing this well, because I think he is such a talented player and he can play on a very high level,” Ostapenko said about Gulbis. “I hope he’s going to go even further in the tournament.”
It also allowed Gulbis to join 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko, who reached the women’s fourth round with a victory earlier Saturday, to give Latvia two players in the round of 16 at a major tournament for the first time.
Today, Gulbis will face 24th seed Kei Nishikori of Japan, who was the runner-up at the 2014 US Open.
But then came one injury after another and a slide to 589th a year ago because of a lack of matches.
The best Grand Slam showing for Gulbis was a run to the semifinals at the 2014 French Open, which included a win against Roger Federer. That was the year he reached his career-best ranking of No 10.
