The thing about cwilbur is that if you ever try to take the good or the bad without the other you’re going to fall for the trap. You can’t say he’s evil and fucked up and deserved to die because you miss how he fights and yells for the people he loves, and you can’t make him the soft older brother without showing him being spiteful and cruel as well. That’s the game. Wilbur likes to say that he’s evil and terrible and fucked up for the same reason the fandom does: because it’s simpler. When you “know” that you’re terrible and fucked up, you don’t have to change, because it’s futile. When you’re ghostbur, you’re the sweet innocent victim that everyone loves, so you don’t need to remember the days where you were hurting. But Wilbur was hurting! He was hurting and alone and sad and miserable and he loathed himself, but ohhhh it was fucking juicy. The dredge the drama the aesthetic, it was unctuous, it was interesting. The perfect engine to drive a villain off the edge of an exploded bridge. So he dresses the part, walks the walk and talks the talk and now the pain is easier to swallow. Now he’s vilbur, or ghostbur, or revivebur or l’manbur or utahbur. Because with a silly little prefix he doesn’t have to be anything more than that one note. That’s the game.
