just makes me sad like. i feel like a lot of their character designs could be more interesting. I understand they’re probably trying to keep to their source material (can’t have their og comic fans getting mad or whatever) but also.

it just makes me feel kinda sad and yucky about it :( the sexualizing of women has always been an issue in marvel comics and I (perhaps naively) was kinda hoping that it wouldn’t be as bad in this game

maybe I’m a hypocrite for enjoying overwatch and being a kiriko main but somehow it manages to feel WORSE than overwatch 😭😭😭😭

Holy shit I had to type this somewhere else then copy+paste because mid-hate-posting it deleted half my paragraphs when I pressed enter to create a new line. How does that even happen. You can't even select text to replace so why did it get rid of them. And there's no back button so whatever lesson learned

anyway Marvel Rivals is going to turn me into a puritan with their character designs. It's like every woman is Widowmaker in different colors. I can withstand extreme sexualization for a character or two but EVERY woman?? please!! They don't even try to make it interesting either. I've never seen "sexy" done so boringly before. I suppose Overwatch has set my standards for character design pretty high, but Rivals couldn't even reach the bar if it was in the dirt.

Silhouette design: there is hardly any for the women. They all share the same hourglass skinny-thick body type. That sucks, but at least they could have variety in their outfits, but no, almost every default skin is a skin-tight vacuum-sealed bodysuit, even for the 14 year old. I’m convinced a large reason for making the game third person is so they could sell more skins of women with ass and boobs out. Maybe the shop skins would offer some diversity, and they do — with skin-tight vacuum-sealed bodysuits, but with cutouts now! (It makes me really appreciate Overwatch's silhouette designs.) I was side eyeing the game already, particularly for Psylocke's first skin and everything about Storm, Dagger, Black Widow, and Hela, but the new Fantastic Four Invisible lady just pissed me the fuck off. She looks identical to Dagger save for the parting of her hair. And her first skin? I thought it couldn't get worse than Psylocke's.

I will give the game some credit for Scarlet Witch, Mantis, Luna Snow, Magik, and Squirrel Girl. Squirrel Girl is a slightly thicker than the rest of the women (though still adhering to the hourglass shape and such), and her outfit isn't a bodysuit (even though it still has midriff, thighs, and chest on display, of course). Luna Snow's and Magik's outfits are very similar to hers: crop top, shorts, tall boots. These are outfits someone would actually choose to wear to feel cute — not that there aren't people that wear bodysuits and all, it's just not every woman in real life does want to wear them. I don't want to imply I care much for realism either, but having realistic elements does make characters feel more authentic. While it sucks these outfits are essentially just a different type of "sexy" outfit, I do appreciate they aren't bodysuits. Psylocke's default skin is also unique but her shop skin just leaves a bad taste in my mouth so she doesn't count here.

I think these three characters' first skins are great. Squirrel Girl's Urban Hunter skin has this 50 vibe that fits her character great, and even though it really emphasizes her chest, it does so differently than the bodysuit-type skins. Her Cheerful Dragoness skin is also quite different than most skins, and while it also really highlights her chest, it's not just a bodysuit (plus I really really adore her hair in that skin). Luna Snow's first skin Shining Star feels like a fun outfit for a show, something that really makes sense for her. It's full of character, with lots of asymmetry that pays homage to her original skin and design. Magik's Eldritch Armor is a feminine armor set that's not ridiculously skimpy, and again, works well with her character. Her winter skin takes enough inspiration from real skiing/snowboarding outfits, and the chainsaw is fun (though I'm not sure why they did that).

Scarlet Witch and Mantis were mentioned here because their bodysuits have some interesting elements that set them apart from the others. They both have some skirt/dress action going on. Scarlet Witch has these shoulder plate things, and her hair gives her a more unique silhouette than the others. Out of all the women, that's the only positive stuff I have to say. I will also give a pass for Hela's provocativeness because she's a god or whatever and goddesses are usually depicted as such, I guess.

One of my biggest gripes with the game is Peni Parker. I don't know much about lolicon but from what I do know, she just feels like Loli bait. Like DVa from Overwatch, she sports a skin-tight vacuum-sealed suit, but she manages to look more childlike with her pigtails. She also has the body type of a freshly pubescent teenager, and while her age isn't explicit in the game (I don't think), in comics (from what I've looked up), she's 14 to 16 years old. She has this defiant and sassy (imo super annoying) personality that's popular with lolicons. And she's Asian, of course. It's just all super uncomfortable.

On top of all this complaining about character design, I don't love the voice acting, sound design, UI design, the lack of any sort of role queue, kit design, monetary system (I cannot believe the BP currency resets like that...) and such. I am happy to have a team hero shooter alternative to Overwatch, but I really don't like the direction it is heading in. Sure, sex sells and all, but can you offer anything else besides that and Jeff the Landshark??
