What they don’t tell you about getting into bird watching is that once you get into it, you do not get to decide when you bird watch. You can be on the beach of some distant tropical country with nothing planned except relaxing. But then you see a Common Fluttering Nut Buster and you’re like fuckkkkkkkk holy shit guys the Common Fluttering Nut Buster is not supposed to life this far west holy shitttttttttt

The Dude
Tumblr media
After a fun painting process, I finished The Dude. This is going to be a gift for my dad to complement the Walter I gave to him last year. It was supposed to be a gift last year but here we are.
This took me about 8 hours but it was very enjoyable. The freehand was a nice challenge and it turned out well for my first time attempting something like this. Plus, this is probably the best face I've ever painted (it helps that most of the skin is obscured).

(I think image compression might be doing me dirty but that's ok. I'm getting a new photography setup soon so this'll definitely be reposted)

WIP: The Dude
Tumblr media
I painted up a Walter for my dad's birthday last year. Now it's time to complete the duo.
Decided to really push myself and go all out for the freehand. I don't have the world's steadiest hand but it turned out pretty great for a first attempt.

Now it's time to go overboard learning how to paint glass to get the white russian looking good. Anything to avoid having to do the pants freehand.

Start of a Sylvaneth Warband
The Sylvaneth are so cool. They're like if Wood Elves took the whole "wood" thing literally and that's way better than being elves. In mid 2022 I started on a Warband for Warcry after convincing my friend to jump in and try out the hobby. I didn't make a ton of progress (I'm finishing these models as my next project) but I did paint most of a few trees that are worth seeing.

This one was my first time ever using contrast paints. It turned out alright. I didn't do my zenithal smoothly and, honestly, should've just done a pure white undercoat.
Even though I've only been in the hobby for a couple years, it's been interesting to see how people's opinions have changed on contrast/speed paints. When I first started, the prevailing narrative was that contrast paints were only for losers who couldn't paint well. Now everyone seems to have realized the purpose they serve.
Personally, I still don't like the look of a lot of them. I use a couple of them often (Black Templar, Hardened Leather, etc.) but I think the new slapchop method looks kinda off. They're a great tool that I find myself not using that often.
The other two that I got most of the way through were in a completely different scheme.
Tumblr media
I had almost lost everything in a fire right before I painted these so fire/burning was really on the mind. That burnt Kurnoth Hunter on the left is mostly finished but probably the best time vs quality relationship for a painting recipe I've ever found.
Simple black prime, paint fire effects in the recesses, drybrush black on those areas to clean up any overspill, drybrush greys and whites to build up ash, then touch up the tips of things with fire and leaves.
Now that I've taken a lot of time away from these, I'm going to go back and finish them up entirely in the burnt style. Then I can justify painting another Warband since nobody I know has one ready to play.

What got me into painting
In March 2020 I found myself under quarantine with some friends. We spent 2 weeks in "Quarantine Cabin", caught Covid, then spent another 2 weeks up there.
During that time, I bought then played an unreasonable amount of Total War: Warhammer 2. I had no Warhammer experience but something about that game completely engrossed me.
Fast-forward almost a year and I came across this excellent video by Cosmonaut Variety Hour.

That fully convinced me to give it a go. I was so excited to play my favorite faction, the Tomb Kings, on the tabletop.
They had been removed from the game.
That's okay, though, because Necrons are basically just space Tomb Kings and I like them.
In March 2021, I went to a local game store with a friend who's big into 40k and I picked up a base paint/tool set and a little Getting Started booklet that came with a Space Marine and a Necron.

There he is. Please, bask in his glory. I did actually have gold paint I could've used but I didn't know that. I also didn't paint his little participation trophy which was a big miss on my part.
After painting this I did a completely reasonable thing and bought both a starter edition for the game and my local store's last Indomitus box. Why, yes, those two boxes are still mostly on sprues. Thank you for asking.
My second marine turned out much better (even if the camera focus didn't).
Tumblr media
Since then, I've painted over 100 more models, dabbled in display painting, entered a competition, and even managed to play zero games of 40k (I jumped to Star Wars Legion).
Painting minis is one of my favorite things to do and I can't wait to keep going.
