Tyranny of Choice: Five Key Factors to Consider in Choosing Your Smartphone (Written for Huawei Tech, Published in Tech cabal )
Choosing a new phone seems like an easy enough task but the truth is, it could be one of the most defining decisions you’ll have to make this year. Good smartphones don’t come cheap, so you might as well get good value for your money. With the superb choices in the market, the tyranny of choice may lead you to make an obvious but uninformed choice. But fear not, having choices is also a good thing, if you’re guided with the knowledge and information to help make your choice smarter and simpler.
Now let’s begin:
Operating System: First things first, what operating system would best suit your mobile needs. If you’re not tech inclined, there are four mobile operating systems, each with its own benefits;
Android: Developed by Google, android is an open source operating system that runs on the majority of new phones. Android has the most robust apps store in comparison to other operating systems called Google Play filled with Google services. The main issue with Android is that because it’s open source, manufacturers like Samsung and HTC often modify its design and functionality, sometimes to the detriment of usability, other manufactures like Huawei modify to increase and improve usability
iOS: iPhone is the only phone that runs iOS and Apple intends on keeping it that way. The iPhone seems to be the benchmark for mobile technology, but as more options become available, it’s slowly no longer the standard on which all other phones are measured. If you own other Apple devices or enjoy services like ITunes, the iPhone may be a good option for you. Sadly, it doesn’t allow as much curious exploration with software as the Android does, but it has a clean and simple design. Unfortunately, unlike Huawei smartphones, for instance, which allow you download music and videos on your device at will, Apple products, much to the dismay of music lovers, prevents you from this key feature.
Windows Phone: After the failure of Windows Mobile, Microsoft started from scratch and built Windows Phone, which is based almost entirely on the Zune MP3 player interface. The great thing about the Windows phone is that everything on your homepage can display moving information or graphics.
Instead of relying on a grid of shortcuts and a notification tray, Windows Phone uses Live Tiles, which are half app icon, half widget.
Screen size: Big screens are so in trend that carrying a small screened phone makes you seem kind of crazy and old-fashioned. Larger screens make the mobile experience so much better. But small screens don’t necessarily mean less power. The iPhone SE with a small screen of 4.4 inches combines’ power plus no stretchy thumbs. But if you’re looking for the best of both worlds - large screen, power, and awesome features, then the Huawei GR5 mini with the sweet spot size of 5.2 inches and with its ultra-thin and chic design to avoid stretchy thumbs is your best bet.
Music download: Majority of us use our phones for three important things - calls, texts and music. Personally, the ability to download music is the most important factor in phone selection process. For the iPhone there’s the iTunes. Although being part of the Apple community makes you feel like you’re part of a family, I think I’m going to run away from home simply because I recently found that on Android I can download music directly from the internet and straight to my phone!  Not only this, you can send songs to fellow android users via Bluetooth! You can’t do this on the iPhone, even if both sharers use an iPhone. If you think of it, android seems more like a family than iOS.  So why settle for an iPhone when you can go for a Huawei or an HTC?
Camera: I think this should have been the first on the list, because with instagram, snapchat and other social media platforms, it is critical to impress on your followers! Hence the need for a phone with a camera that you can actually call a Camera! Basically, all top tier smart phone manufacturers have cameras from Apple to Huawei to Samsung to Windows but the question is which of them have The Best camera? With a Dual lens camera, crafted in partnership with Leica; the leading camera manufacturing company, the Huawei P9 camera produces more light than both the Samsung S7 and IPhone 6s, making the Huawei P9 camera clearly superior, plus with the monochrome and clarity camera features, all your photos and selfies will come out looking incredible!
Battery life: This is one feature that I regret not prioritizing when selecting my phone. If you have an iPhone you basically have something I like to call (BLA) Battery life anxiety! It’s when you’re constantly in need of that power bank or looking for a wall socket or laptop to charge your phone. Sometimes it always seems like your phone runs out of power when you need it the most. So when you’re looking for a new phone, be sure to check the strength of the battery. Make sure you don’t go for anything less than 3000mAH. Phone manufacturers now recognize the grave importance of battery life and are squeezing greater-capacity batteries into their phones. Typical phone batteries start in the neighborhood of 700mAh and can go all the way up to 4,000mAh, like the Huawei Mate 8
Price: While all these features are important, price always seems to be the key deciding factor to most especially young people still in school and young professionals. What we fail to understand is that the cost of a phone is not just the figure on the price tag but the value of the phone to us and how much it satisfies our mobile needs. While you could get a new iPhone 6s for about N230, 000, some people see this as not much considering the actual value of the phone, some may simply pay more for an iPhone simply because it’s an iPhone. Others would prefer to go for something a bit different with better quality, more functionality and staying power, at a similarly high but more acceptable price of 170,000 and above like a Huawei smartphone or a windows phone.
Bonus Tip: The fact that everyone is buying it, does NOT mean it’s the best! This is becoming increasingly clear with some of the amazing new devices we see from Android phone companies.(Link to published article)

Real Estate Developers that Fail to Adapt to Smart-City Technology Risk Becoming Obsolete (written for Cisco systems published in business day and Cisco global website Dec 2017.
It is quite clear that technological advancement has greatly influenced the subsistence and survival of man in all facets of life. Its impact appears so vast in some areas of life such as construction, manufacturing, finance and communication, amongst others. With regards to construction, the real estate industry in Nigeria is currently witnessing a cyclical change, as developers begin to fully grasp the benefits and comparative advantages of technological real estate innovations, in terms of attractiveness of their properties to prospective buyers.
The advent of smart buildings technology is one of such innovations that has become the deciding factor in identifying prime real estate as customers are actively seeking new experiences in their purchase and consumption of real estate. To enable new customer experiences, accelerate workforce innovation and introduce innovative business models, companies are digitizing their business operations and buildings- be it a retail store, a factory floor, a healthcare or an educational institution or your very own workplace- are central to this digital transformation.
Building owners are looking at technology convergence to deliver enhanced occupant experiences and improved efficiencies in their buildings. However, as the number of networks and connections within buildings grow, they are becoming increasingly complex. Interconnecting and interoperating isolated building systems such as lighting, HVAC, badging systems, security, CCTV, sensors and audio-video equipment, into a single converged system is fundamental to the digital transformation of buildings. Today’s building systems and equipment need to work together smoothly and efficiently to meet owners’ and occupants’ needs, which requires a holistic approach of integrating new technologies.
Cisco has the leading footprint in network innovation, the Cisco Catalyst Digital Building Series switch is a big step towards a robust foundation for the next-generation digital buildings. This is the industry’s first purpose-built switch optimized for low voltage PoE deployments, IoT connectivity and building automation in smart buildings. Digital Building Series switches will greatly simplify the deployment experience with integrated security and lower total cost of ownership. Other developers in Nigeria have also leveraged of the attractiveness of smart city technology to ensure that its structures are equipped with start of the art innovative technology that ensures efficient communication between all devices within the city. But the question here is do consumers fully understand the value and benefits of smart city technology.
A building isn’t connected unless the people inside are. Smart buildings can be outfitted with high-speed internet and voice over internet protocol services. Since businesses increasingly rely on the internet, an increase in speed could mean an increase in production and revenue. Smart buildings are designed to constantly gather data and monitor themselves for problems in the structure’s facilities. These technological advancements are made possible by companies which constantly push the boundaries of innovations, Cisco is one of such organization.
The vision of smart city offered by Cisco is of an integrated urban information and communication technology (ICT) overlay on a city that can support delivery of connected urban services and allow for efficient management of those services on a global scale. Cisco helps cities gather, share, understand and act on data from and with other agencies, from and with city residents and visitors, and from and with business and social organizations. So, for example, if an elevator breaks down, the building could find the problem, self-diagnose and communicate with the appropriate organization to get it fixed. Smart buildings can also monitor system performance to increase energy savings. Overseeing these processes could decrease complaints about inefficient or failed facilities, reducing time spent addressing potential problems. Smart buildings are expected to save money in more ways than one might think.
It is quite clear that smart cities significantly reduce energy and operating costs, but there are a number of expected not-so-obvious benefits gained from implementing a smart building system. It is becoming increasingly important for people to feel safe at the workplace, and smart buildings can help in those efforts. Take, for example, a situation in which a fire alarm goes off. With Cisco’s Smart+Connected Communities, a smart building can detect smoke, tell occupants to evacuate the building, contact the correct authorities and prepare the structure for minimizing the spread of risk. Security also is an important issue, and the deployment of cameras and the ability to stream footage from a surveillance camera to a laptop can increase safety and provide peace of mind to tenants.
By leveraging the Internet of Things, cities can integrate people, processes, data and things to create safe and vital places to live, work, learn and play. Partnering for Innovation and Success Cisco’s engagement in smart-city issues is championed by the Smart+Connected Communities (S+CC) initiative under the Cisco Industry Solutions group. Working closely with the Internet of Things group, the Services Platform Group and other departments within Cisco, S+CC is developing a growing portfolio of city-oriented solutions
Early adapters of smart building technology are embarking on a journey that will lead to increased economic benefits, sustainability, and positive occupant experience outcomes. This is equivalent to incremental change driven by simplistic short-term returns. Crossing the chasm into a truly intelligent built environment will require a roadmap, supported by not only facility managers but also, real estate developers, and all key influencers in the digital transformation of real estate. The future of intelligent buildings is experiential — and real estate developers who embrace the intelligent building roadmap process will gain a competitive advantage. EVEN if you don't have small children, chances are you've fallen in love with Frozen this year. And, whether by coincidence or by design, Frozen is one of the few Disney movies to pass The Bechdel Test.
