The sea was never silent; every creature of different shapes and colors filled it. It was enchanting, enticing even. As a girl, you were always curious about what lay beneath the sea. Forbidden it always was. Mother and father always shielded you. Warned you not to swim beyond the reef. The tale of the underworld ‘vaerath’ was told for centuries, never dying out. They say the king was banished and forced to rule the underworld.

He became the cruelest man alive, luring innocent creatures below the ocean reef, and they were never to be seen again. His beauty is claimed to be something of a god. Dark eyes that see through the windows of your soul, skin far more fair than the sirens, luminous scales of sapphire , sculpted beauty that takes much time to construct, but a voice laced with cruelty and desire and a heart crippled with betrayal. Merely a tale it must be, but did you really think it true?

You wanted more out of life, to see more. Maybe your curiosity would be the death of you. You’re a naive young woman, far more curious than you should be. Mother’s and father’s sudden disappearance a few years ago made you question everything you thought you knew. It was ruled out as a suicide or maybe the current was too strong above the surface. You didn’t want to believe it; certainly, if there were no bodies, they must be alive. You clung to that idea that could still be alive.

Your endless adventures seem to never bore you; you find yourself swimming amongst the coral, watching it sway carefreely. The beauty that surrounds you seems to distract you from the fact that you’re alone. You fail to realize the stillness of the water or the lack of life that lives within it. The sea seems to have darkened almost as if it’s closing you in. You knew not to swim below , but something seems to pull you down.

Swimming farther from the reef, darkness engulfs you, a ray of light being the only thing in sight. It calls you; it wants you. And so you allow it to have you; without turning back, you move closer. Regret sinks deep as the light fades, and a beautiful man emerges from the depths of the sand. His eyes firmly locked with yours. Too afraid, you make a small motion to flee but it becomes far too late as the man coils around your tail, pulling you far below. It’s dark. Sinister.

Your mind scrambling to piece things together, breath faltering, vision blurring. Vaerath, the underworld. For the tale of it seemed so impossible, but the beauty of that man left you to believe that he himself must be the king. You’re caged. Awaking with a gasp, your lungs adjust to the cold stillness around you. Iron bars surround you, the room is black and gold with various shades of blue painting the room, and beautiful sculptures of gods and women of every shape fill the space with weeping faces. Too caught up and confused with the things around you, you fail to realize he's emerging from the darkness. “You’ve awoken much sooner than I expected,” voice silk and cruel. Cruel For such a beautiful man as him to pull you below and cage you up.

Turning sharply with breath caught in your throat, you watch as he moves closer. Just him. No throne, no guards, only him. Your voice comes out as a whisper, unsure if you should even speak, “Why am I here…?” Tilting his head as he gazes upon you, and the expression on his face is unreadable, he speaks. “You came to me…willingly.”

Fury. You feel coursing in your veins. “You pulled me under!” His grin was devilishly charming. “You called, and I answered. I simply helped you out.

Cocky he is. But you were so stubborn; why couldn’t you have simply listened and obeyed? You were warned about searching places you shouldn’t be. “They warned me about you…you know?” Curiosity paints his face. “Oh? What did they tell you?”

“That you’re cruel, banished, to rule this world. That you lure innocent creatures below and take them captive for them to never return or be seen.” Your voice wavers, fearful of what he might do to you. A smirk curling on his lips. “Hmm, is that what they say?” He stares at you mockingly. You feel bare as you try to hide some part of you, his eyes boring into yours. “Curiosity and longing are what draw them below; I simply invite them in, and they accept…just as you did.”

Swallowing hard as your heart races. His words weigh on you, knowing that part of what he says is true. “I didn’t—I’m not like them… I’ll leave...” Your voice is much steadier. Reaching his hand between the iron bars, he caresses your face, his voice barely a whisper. “You think you can leave? The world Vaerath won’t let you leave so easily…and neither will I.” His voice was firm and no longer gentle.

A feeling of hopelessness settles in. As you watch him disappear into the darkness once more, leaving you alone. His words linger in the back of your mind. Curling into yourself as the dark current brushes against your skin, you close your eyes in hopes of falling asleep. But rest never comes. As time passes, he appears, voice low, lacking amusement. “Still here, hm? Thought you would’ve tried to leave.”

You ignore. Knowing it’s pointless. Afraid of what he’d do if you tried to leave. Afraid of the possibility of you never leaving. Your silence is much expected by him. "I've seen what's in your heart. I've saved you from the cruelty of the sea, though many think of me as cruel. You'll soon understand." His voice softens once more.

Curious about him, you are. Something true is within him; you see it, and you're determined to find it. You'll find out who the man is beyond his title. You fear it may not only be the sea that holds danger but him as well.
